The orientation of lugdunum conuenarum and the celtic feasts marking the start of the seasons in ancient gaul
There is a long-lasting debate, started in the nineteenth century by d‟Arbois de Jubainville and Jullian, among others, regarding the pan-Celtic nature of the mid-season (or rather, start of season) feasts known
from the Mediaeval Ireland (set on 1st November, February, May and August). D‟Arbois indicated that one of these feasts coincided with the festival celebrated during Roman times at Lugdunum (Lyon) on August 1st
from 12 BC onwards. We recently verified that the orientation of the earlier parts of this Roman colony were laid out facing the sunrise on this date since its foundation in 43 BC, prior to any possible link with Augustus.
This fact prompted us to investigate the orientation of other Roman cities in Gaul, particularly those named Lugdunum which still contain Roman buildings capable of being measured. The most complex of these is Lugdunum Conuerarum (present-day Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges). With a Celtic name and mixed Aquitaine-Latin culture, it is oriented towards the sunrise on February 1st. Other cities in Gaul and Hispania have also been considered, which have similar orientations. We therefore verify the pan-Celtic character of the mid-season feasts. Finally, we present the hypothesis that the conversion of these feasts from a luni-solar calendar to the solar Julian calendar took place in the centre of Gaul at some time between the reigns of Caesar and Augustus. At a later stage, this model would be exported by early Christianity into Ireland, then serving as an interpretative inspiration for scholars such as d‟Arbois de Jubainville and othersS
Orientatio ad sidera: Astronomy and landscape in Qart Hadašt/Carthago Nova
[EN] Archaeological investigations in Cartagena -the ancient Punic Qart Hadašt, Roman Carthago Nova- have manifested the existence of ritual, urban and topographical elements that could be analyzed from the perspective of Cultural Astronomy. Therefore, in October 2013, an interdisciplinary team of astronomers and archaeologists conducted a field campaign of the main topographic and archaeological landmarks of the Punic and Roman periods of the city. Methodologically, a basic guide criterion was established for each particular element, measuring its corresponding azimuth(s). Three tandems, including precision compasses and clinometers, were used to take the measurements. The data obtained have demonstrated the relevance, within the ancient city, of a series of orientations towards sunrise and sunset at the summer solstice, whose significance could be fully integrated within the context of the Punic ritual. This skyscaping was merged and reinterpreted in the framework of the subsequent Roman appropriation of the city landscape, including their successive urban and architectural programs, in particular that of the period of Emperor Augustus, when certain astronomical orientations could serve to strengthen the image of Rome and the 'Princeps' as restorers of peace and guarantees of a new order based in cosmological elements.Peer Reviewe
Stevensite-based geofilter for the retention of tetracycline from water
The antibiotic tetracycline, is considered a contaminant of emerging concern due to its presence in wastewater effluents, surface waters and groundwaters. Adsorption of tetracycline on soils and clays has been extensively studied to remove the contaminant from the water. A decreasing adsorption as the pH increases is normally reported in the pH range 3–9. However, adsorption isotherms performed on a commercial stevensite presented increasing adsorption with the increasing pH, in the pH range 2–8. This is very interesting since the pH in natural and wasterwaters are normally in the range 6–8. A laboratory design of a geofilter using a mixture of sand and stevensite was tested against an inflow solution of tetracycline 1 g/L, NaNO3 0.1 M and pH = 7 in an advective transport cell experiment. The number of tetracycline molecules exceed by >3 times the number exchangeable positions in the stevensite geofilter. Under these conditions, the TC adsorption on the geofilter reaches 590 mg/g, surpassing the retention capacity of most adsorbents found in literature. Besides, the tetracycline is completely desorbed by the inflow of a saline solution (Mg(NO3)2 0.5 M, at pH = 2) with capacity to replace the exchangeable positions, thus, recovering the geofilter and the tetracyclineThis work has been financially supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness through the AGL2016-78490-R projec
Orientation layout of Roman towns by using the varatio
Vitruvio (De Architectura VI, I).
This paper deals with the long-lasting debate about the
orientation of Roman cities by combining two procedures: an
analysis of a statistically significant sample of orientations of
Roman settlements in the Iberian Peninsula and the results of
the experimentation and re-construction of Roman surveying
instruments. Specifically, the study seeks to reinforce, or reject,
the hypothesis of the use of the varatio, and its possible mode
of execution: a method based on the application of right-angled
triangles with legs in proportion of integer numbers. The
meridian line is also postulated as the generating line for each
new project, including a possible procedure for obtaining it from the indications given by Vitruvius (De Architectura VI,
I). The results derived from the statistical analysis show that
orientations seem not to be randomly distributed but they tend
to cluster around particular directions that agree with the
expected values in case this geometrical technique was
commonly applied
SANAA, Rolex Learning Center
ARKRIT
