Concrete cracking control in underwater marine structures using basalt fiber

    Get PDF
The construction of coastal ports requires the use of materials that meet the demands of the marine environment, to prevent underwater concrete structures from cracking and spalling easily; basalt fiber is used to delay the expansion of concrete and prevent the formation of cracks. This research studies the behavior of concrete for prefabricated piles with Portland Cement Type I and basalt fibers added in 0.1%, 0.3% and 0.6%; the results indicate that the fiber is suitable for concrete, the slump decreases, the compressive strength increases for specimens cured in tap water and sea water, the relationship between resistances does not vary, and the depth of carbonation decreases

Characterization of Mountainous Production Systems in Quimiag Parrish, Chimborazo province, Ecuador

    Get PDF
This study characterizes and typifies dairy areas in the Quimiag parish, Ecuador, using quantitative and qualitative information simultaneously, of production indicators, current technological development, management of dairy cows and the human resources employed. A total of 291 dairy areas were analyzed with three different techniques of multivariate statistical analysis: Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA), and Cluster Analysis (CA). Three production groups or systems were observed to have different efficiency responses. System number three was characterized by having more intensive production systems on average, along with a more advanced technological development than systems one and two

Bioeconomic Indicators of Ateleia cubensis (DC) Dietr for Production with Ruminants in Camaguey, Cuba.

Assessment of bioeconomic indicators of Ateleia cubensis (DC) Dietr. for production with ruminants was made, on ferromagnesium brown-red fersialitic soils of ultramafic savannahs in Camaguey, Cuba. The bioeconomic effect was simulated with a dual-purpose production system oriented to milk sales as the main product, on land covering 35 ha. The creation of a  protein bank is  recommended  in the area, using  A. cubensis  (DC) Dietr, on 15% of the total farm area. To simulate milk production response, feed balances were performed, all based on likely grass consumption and feeds used, according to their nutritional quality. The budget was portioned for analysis to determine  plant suitability for protein banks. Feasibility of the plant as a local source of protein for cattle was demonstrated through a bioeconomic perspectiv

Africanization of Melliferous Bees (Apis mellifera.L.) Bibliographic Review

    Get PDF
Context: The hybridization process (Africanization) of European bees with African bees is a problem for apiculture farmers in the Americas, due to high swarming levels and defensiveness. The latter hinders colony handling, and has caused accidents to people and animals, increasing the risks of beekeeping. In this sense, there is a need for genetic breeding of melliferous bees, and previous identification of subspecies. Aim: To evaluate the origin of melliferous bees (Apis mellifera), and the process of Africanization and dispersion of Africanized bees throughout the Americas, as well as methods of identification. Methods: The databases of Sciencedirect, Google-Scholar, Scopus, and NCBI were reviewed under the following key words, Apis mellifera, Apis, Africanized bees, geometric morphometrics, mitochondrial DNA. Special emphasis was paid to papers published within the last five years. Results: The origin and distribution of melliferous bees, and the Africanization and dispersion processes of Africanized bees were described. Additionally, the evolution of methods for the characterization of Apis mellifera species were updated. Conclusions: Africanization can be considered the most important process in the transformation of conduct and morphological features of melliferous bees, which allowed for their rapid dispersion in the Americas. The identification methods based on parents are essential to know possible process of genetic erosion, and to present strategies for bee conservation and breeding in every region

On computational aspects of discrete Sobolev inner products on the unit circle

    Get PDF
In this paper, we show how to compute in O(n² )steps the Fourier coefficients associated with the Gelfand-Levitan approach for discrete Sobolev orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle when the support of the discrete component involving derivatives is located outside the closed unit disk. As a consequence, we deduce the outer relative asymptotics of these polynomials in terms of those associated with the original orthogonality measure. Moreover, we show how to recover the discrete part of our Sobolev inner product. The research of K.
