Vernier hybrid wind turbine generators
A great deal of research is currently being undertaken in the field of renewable energy, much of it dedicated to wind power conversion and focussing on a machine topology that increases efficiency. The vernier hybrid machine, VHM, is one topology considered and has promising features for use in direct drive and variable speed operation. Using the VHM topology, two prototype generators were built and tested. The machines use magnets that are buried within the stator and orientated in a flux concentration arrangement. The flux paths in the machines are inherently 3D in nature and thus require complicated modelling methods to achieve sufficient design accuracy. Various tests were conducted in an effort to find results that will describe the machines characteristics and operating mechanisms. It was found that increased torque handling capabilities can be observed at the detriment of power factor and construction complexity. With the use of power factor correction and suitable construction techniques the VHM is a viable wind turbine generation technique. To determine whether it is suitable for renewable energy applications would require an in depth economic feasibility study over the operating lifetime of the machine

Peningkatan kemahiran bahasa dan komunikasi melalui pengaplikasian circle timebagi kanak-kanak tadika (Improving communication skill using circle time for preschool children)
This study aims to analyse communication skills through Circle time activities implemented in a private preschool in the state of Selangor. The study employs qualitative approach and adopts case study designs. The purposive samples involved in this study were two 5-year-old boys with their mothers and 5 years old class teacher. The research method that has been implemented is observation and semi-structured interview. The researcher used the thematic analysis method to analyze the research findings and several themes emerged were interactive activities and child-centered activities. Interactive activities such as story-telling, play based learning, and asking questions are activities that teachers practice every morning. The child-centered activities such as question and answer and play based learning activity are important to improve communication skill for children. The implications from this study can help the teachers, parents and kindergarten in adopting the Circle time activities to improve the development of children’s language and communication skills

Learning in Collaborative Moments:Practising Relating Differently with Dementia in Dialogue Meetings
Silent slips, trips and broken hips in the under 60s: a review of the literature
This critical review of the literature regarding the recovery experiences and healthcare needs of people under 60 following a fragility hip fracture seeks to identify the associated implications for nursing practice and inform care delivery. Forty papers were included following a structured database, citation and grey literature search and filtering of results in line with specified inclusion criteria. Hip fracture is a common, serious and complex injury and an important cause of morbidity, mortality and rising healthcare costs worldwide. This review indicates that although commonly associated with the elderly, incidence and impact in the under 60s has been under-explored. Current health policy, professional and social norms almost exclusively focus on the elderly, surgical interventions and short-term outcomes, rendering the under 60s an inadvertently marginalised, relatively 'silent' sub-set of the hip fracture population. Nurses must be aware, however, of the different recovery needs of this younger group. The limited evidence available indicates these include work related needs and long term physical and psychosocial limitations in this socially and economically active group. Priorities are identified for research to inform policy and practice. Meanwhile, nurses can address the needs of this group by listening to and involving them and their families as healthcare partners. [Abstract copyright: Copyright © 2018. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
Learning in Collaborative Moments
In this article, we describe experiences with dialogue evenings within a research collaboration on long-term care and dementia in the Netherlands. What started as a conventional process of ‘reporting back’ to interlocutors transformed over the course of two years into learning and knowing together. We argue that learning took place in three different articulations. First, participants learnt to expand their notion of knowledge. Second, they learnt to relate differently to each other and, therewith, to dementia. And third, participants learnt how to generate knowledge with each other. We further argue that these processes did not happen continuously, but in moments. We suggest that a framework of collaborative moments can be helpful for research projects that are not set up collaboratively from the start. Furthermore, we point to the work required to facilitate these moments.</jats:p
Cross-sectional structure evolution of phase-separated spin-coated ethylcellulose/hydroxypropylcellulose films during solvent quenching
Porous phase-separated ethylcellulose/hydroxypropylcellulose (EC/HPC) films are used to control drug transport out of pharmaceutical pellets. The films are applied on the pellets using fluidized bed spraying. The drug transport rate is determined by the structure of the porous films that are formed as the water-soluble HPC leaches out. However, a detailed understanding of the evolution of the phase-separated structure during production is lacking. Here, we have investigated EC/HPC films produced by spin-coating, which mimics the industrial manufacturing process. This work aimed to understand the structure formation and film shrinkage during solvent evaporation. The cross-sectional structure evolution was characterized using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), profilometry and image analysis. The effect of the EC/HPC ratio on the cross-sectional structure evolution was investigated. During shrinkage of the film, the phase-separated structure undergoes a transition from 3D to nearly 2D structure evolution along the surface. This transition appears when the typical length scale of the phase-separated structure is on the order of the thickness of the film. This was particularly pronounced for the bicontinuous systems. The shrinkage rate was found to be independent of the EC/HPC ratio, while the initial and final film thickness increased with increasing HPC fraction. A new method to estimate part of the binodal curve in the ternary phase diagram for EC/HPC in ethanol has been developed. The findings of this work provide a good understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the morphology development and allow tailoring of thin EC/HPC films structure for controlled drug release
