Feeding the imaginary
The imaginary that has dominated the fashion system since the mid-twentieth
century seems, in recent years, to have been challenged by empirical
phenomena.
‘Imaginary’ is a complex notion that can be addressed from many
perspectives. Here, we refer to the stock of images, values, practices and rules
that dominate the western fashion system and that its participants take for
granted in their relationship with fashion. Of course, different participants
base their understanding of fashion on different imaginaries, and different
imaginaries may be shared by different communities, but a hegemonic imaginary
has underpinned the western fashion discourse for some decades now.
For example, pertaining to this imaginary is the ideal of the female body’s
thinness (Bordo 1993); the positive value attributed to the youthful body; and
the aspiration to the beautiful-and-new as a source of distinction (Lipovetsky
1987), as well as the sur-representation of Caucasian ethnic groups in images
of fashion (Entwistle and Wissinger 2006). Also pertaining to this imaginary
of fashion are usually implicit assumptions about human life. For instance,
assumptions about the temporal organization of the day and the week into
work time (office), leisure time (in the countryside) and social time (evening),
or the belief that the possession of certain consumer goods certifies
social status. These are fragments of representations of the world consistent
with the project of western modernity to achieve the ideal of a world in which
technology and science enable humans to fulfil themselves as independent
adults with the capacity to choose. This, in fact, was the promise of the
Enlightenment, with industrial capitalism and the bourgeoisie embodying
its. values and assuming the task of realizing it. Fashion as an institution of western
modernity (Wilson 1985; Lehmann 2000) has contributed significantly to
this project – and is an explicit manifestation of it. Recently, however, the western fashion system seems to have been able
to include meanings that it had thus far marginalized. A number of factors are
altering the ordinary metabolism of this system; new ways to do things and
new representations (discourses, visual contents, values) appear that seem to
provide the dominant fashion imaginary with new contents and avenues.
The need to take stock of these new developments prompted the conference
entitled Fashion Tales 2015: Feeding the Imaginary, organized in June 2015
by Centro Modacult of the Catholic University of Milan, in collaboration with
this journal. The conference – of which this issue of the International Journal of
Fashion Studies collects some contributions – identified three main directions
along which innovative experiences occur. Two of them have to do with the
impact of new technologies on the structure of the fashion system itself; in
particular, the technologies arising from advances in chemical research, and
digital technologies. While the former are transforming the fashion industry
under the banner of sustainability, the latter are leading to the widespread
mediatization of fashion (Rocamora 2016). The third direction concerns nonwestern fashio

Tracking beats and microtiming in Afro-Latin American music using conditional random fields and deep learning
Trabajo presentado en ISMIR 2019 : 20th Conference of the International Society for Music Information Retrieval, Delft, Netherlands, 4-8 nov, 2019PostprintEvents in music frequently exhibit small-scale temporal deviations (microtiming), with respect to the underlying regular metrical grid. In some cases, as in music from the Afro-Latin American tradition, such deviations appear systematically, disclosing their structural importance in rhythmic and stylistic configuration. In this work we explore the idea of automatically and jointly tracking beats and microtiming in timekeeper instruments of Afro-Latin American music, in particular Brazilian samba and Uruguayan candombe. To that end, we propose a language model based on conditional random fields that integrates beat and onset likelihoods as observations. We derive those activations using deep neural networks and evaluate its performance on manually annotated data using a scheme adapted to this task. We assess our approach in controlled conditions suitable for these timekeeper instruments, and study the microtiming profiles’ dependency on genre and performer, illustrating promising aspects of this technique towards a more comprehensive understanding of these music traditions
IENE 9 project: developing a culturally competent and compassionate LGBT + curriculum in health and social care education
Introduction
The IENE projects (2008–2022) aim to promote a model for developing intercultural dialogue and enhance the ability to provide culturally competent and compassionate care for the health and social care professionals at national and European levels. The IENE 9 project, named “Developing a culturally competent and compassionate LGBT + curriculum in health and social care education,” builds on the work developed in the previous IENE projects and emphasizes the importance of addressing LGBT + issues in health and social care education.
Method
Through an innovative Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), professionals will learn the skills to work toward building an LGBT + inclusive health and social care system.
Result
Notwithstanding the progress made in recent years on LGBT + issues, research indicates that too little attention has been given to LGBT + needs in health and social care settings, and these remain substantial issues that are often ignored.
Conclusion
This letter to the editor aims to present the IENE 9 project given that greater efforts are needed to improve professionals’ skills regarding sexual and gender minority population. We strive to continue our efforts in promoting the well-being and mental health of LGBT + people in health and social care education
LGBT+ Training needs for health and social care professionals: a cross-cultural comparison among seven European countries
Introduction
Research suggests that specific training on LGBT+ issues may improve the competencies and skills of health and social care (HSC) professionals, which reduces the negative attitudes toward LGBT+ people. Despite this, there seems to be a lack of coverage of LGBT+ needs in HSC education. The present study aims to explore the specific LGBT+ training needs of HSC professionals and to examine the relationship between these training needs and the four dimensions of the Papadopoulos model, i.e. cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, cultural sensitivity, and cultural competence.
Methods
The research used data from a cross-cultural project, “Intercultural Education for Nurses in Europe (IENE9),” which was administered to 412 HSC academics and workers (62% females; Mage=46.06, SDage=10.48) between February 2020 and July 2020, in seven European countries: UK (coordinator), Denmark, Spain, Germany, Cyprus, Italy, and Romania.
Results
Hierarchical multiple regression showed that higher training needs were associated with cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, and cultural competence. The need for training on LGBT+ issues was higher for Cyprus, Romania, Spain, Italy, and the UK, compared with Denmark (no differences between Germany and Denmark were found).
Conclusions
We believe that there has been a lack of focus on the LGBT+ training needs of HSC professionals: Greater efforts are required to develop a culturally competent and compassionate LGBT+ curriculum.
Social Policy Implications
Findings from the present study will inform the development of a free, Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), for culturally competent and compassionate HSC professionals in Europe to improve the quality of their car
The Field of Fashion Materialized: A Study of London Fashion Week
This article, based on two studies of the fashion industry examines one of its key institutions, London Fashion Week (LFW). Drawing on the work of Bourdieu, we argue that this event is a materialization of the field of fashion. We examine how LFW renders visible the boundaries, relational positions, capital and habitus at play in the field, reproducing critical divisions within it.As well as making visible the field, LFW is a ceremony of consecration within it that contributes to its reproduction. The central aim of this article is to develop an empirically grounded sense of field, reconciling this macro-structural concept with embodied and situated reality

las Unidades de NutriciónIntroduction: The quality assessment in health activities
requires the choice of indicators in line with the
results we want to measure. Of all possible, we should prioritize
those that allow us to obtain the most relevant
information without overloading the regular work of our
units.
Objective: To determine the opinion of the members of
SENPE regarding the relevance and feasibility of using a
selection of quality indicators designed for use in clinical
nutrition.
Methods: E-mail survey sent to members of SENPE
asking them their views on 12 quality indicators, evaluating
each in terms of their relevance and feasibility of
implementation in their environment.
Results: 40 respondents answered from 40 centers in 12
different regions. In general, the indicators were considered
more relevant than feasible. The indicators best
rated were: “identification in artificial nutrition bags,
“semi-recumbent position in patient with nasogastric
tube feeding” and “basic clinical protocols”. Considering
the type of indicator: “patient identification in the bags of
artificial nutrition (structure),” a semi-incorporated
“and” basic clinical protocols (process), and “fulfillment
of the caloric goal” (result).
Conclusion: The results of the survey can make a selection
of indicators that could be considered for first-line
