Intercultural Art Music and the Sensory Veracity of Reconciliation:Brent Michael Davids’ Powwow Symphony on the Dakota Music Tour

    Get PDF
This article questions music’s particular stake in Indigenous initiatives of redress and reconciliation. It examines music’s media-specific relationship with redress and reconciliation, and public discourses that situate intercultural art music performance as a medium of reconciliation. In addressing intercultural art music’s abilities to engender reconciliation, the article considers its social and political efficacy from two perspectives. Firstly, it offers a brief survey of the public and academic discourses on music’s ability to engender reconciliation. Secondly, it examines how the discourse of music’s power for reconciliation played out in an a performance of Mohican composer Brent Michael Davids’ Powwow Symphony presented as part of the Dakota Music Tour (2010) in Minnesota.

Objective To determine the associations between socioeconomic status (SES) and physical fitness in a sample of Colombian youth. Study design Prueba SER is cross-sectional survey of schoolchildren in Bogota, Colombia. Mass, stature, muscular fitness (standing long-jump, handgrip), and cardiorespiratory fitness (20-m shuttle run) were measured in 52 187 schoolchildren 14-16 years of age. Area-level SES was categorized from 1 (very low) to 4 (high) and parent-reported family income was categorized as low, middle, or high. Results Converting measures into z scores showed stature, muscular, and cardiorespiratory fitness were significantly (z = 0.3-0.7) below European values. Children in the mid- and high SES groups jumped significantly further than groups with very low SES. Differences were independent of sex but became nonsignificant when adjusted for anthropometric differences. Participants in the mid-SES and high-SES groups had better handgrip scores when adjusted for body dimension. There were, however, no significant between-group differences in cardiorespiratory fitness, which was strongly clustered by school and significantly greater in students from private schools. Conclusions Area-level SES is associated with measures of muscular fitness in Colombian schoolchildren. These associations were largely explained by the large differences in body dimensions observed between SES groups. When area-level SES is considered, there was no evidence that family income influenced fitness. The clustering of outcomes reaffirms the potential importance of schools and area-level factors in promoting fitness through opportunities for physical activity. Interventions implemented in schools, can improve academic attainment; a factor likely to be important in promoting the social mobility of children from poorer families

NADPH oxidase-2 derived superoxide drives mitochondrial transfer from bone marrow stromal cells to leukemic blasts

Improvements in the understanding of the metabolic cross-talk between cancer and its micro-environment are expected to lead to novel therapeutic approaches. Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells have increased mitochondria compared to non-malignant CD34+ hematopoietic progenitor cells. Furthermore, contrary to the Warburg hypothesis, (AML) relies on oxidative phosphorylation to generate ATP. Here we report that in human AML, NOX2 generates superoxide which stimulates bone marrow stromal cells (BMSC) to AML blast transfer of mitochondria through AML derived tunnelling nanotubes. Moreover, inhibition of NOX2 was able to prevent mitochondrial transfer, increase AML apoptosis and improve NSG AML mouse survival. Although mitochondrial transfer from BMSC to non-malignant CD34+ cells occurs in response to oxidative stress, NOX2 inhibition had no detectable effect on non-malignant CD34+ cell survival. Taken together we identify tumor-specific dependence on NOX2 driven mitochondrial transfer as a novel therapeutic strategy in AML

Relational, Physical, and Mental Health: How Relationship Satisfaction Influences Exercise Self-Efficacy

    Get PDF
Can being satisfied in a relationship create the confidence to exercise? Some research suggests a positive relationship between exercise and positive relationship events for both partners (Johnson et al., 2018), yet there may be important mediators between relationships and exercise, that have not been tested. Research has found that higher relationship satisfaction is associated with lower depressive and anxiety symptoms (Whisman, Uebelacker, & Weinstock, 2004). Another important mechanism linked with exercise is self-efficacy—or the confidence to carry out a behavior (i.e., exercise; Jackson, Tucker, & Herman, 2007). Self-efficacy and mental health are also significantly related (Bandura, 1997), as is exercise and mental health (Chekroud et al., 2018). The question remains then, how is relationship satisfaction and exercise self-efficacy linked? Utilizing dyadic data from 234 heterosexual couples, the purpose of the current study was to determine the association between relationship satisfaction and exercise self-efficacy mediated through mental health

Relationship Satisfaction & Diet: Exploring the Mechanisms through which Intimate Relationships Influence Physical Health

    Get PDF
Understanding how intimate relationships influence physical health has been an important topic of focus; however, research remains unclear on the mechanisms through which this influence occurs. The purpose of this study was to examine how relationship satisfaction relates to diet quality, through mental health (depression and anxiety) and diet self-efficacy. Using a dyadic mediation model with a sample of 234 heterosexual couples, researchers found that women\u27s higher relationship satisfaction was associated with better diet through lower depression and higher diet self-efficacy. Results revealed the same association between women\u27s relationship satisfaction and diet through lower anxiety. Interestingly, rather than mediation through mental health, the association between men\u27s relationship satisfaction and diet was mediated through their partners\u27 diet self-efficacy. This presentation will review the gendered pathways by which relationship satisfaction influences diet in heterosexual couples and discuss the important implications of these findings for tracing how intimate relationships affect overall well-being

FastHPOCR: pragmatic, fast, and accurate concept recognition using the human phenotype ontology.

MOTIVATION: Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO)-based phenotype concept recognition (CR) underpins a faster and more effective mechanism to create patient phenotype profiles or to document novel phenotype-centred knowledge statements. While the increasing adoption of large language models (LLMs) for natural language understanding has led to several LLM-based solutions, we argue that their intrinsic resource-intensive nature is not suitable for realistic management of the phenotype CR lifecycle. Consequently, we propose to go back to the basics and adopt a dictionary-based approach that enables both an immediate refresh of the ontological concepts as well as efficient re-analysis of past data. RESULTS: We developed a dictionary-based approach using a pre-built large collection of clusters of morphologically equivalent tokens-to address lexical variability and a more effective CR step by reducing the entity boundary detection strictly to candidates consisting of tokens belonging to ontology concepts. Our method achieves state-of-the-art results (0.76 F1 on the GSC+ corpus) and a processing efficiency of 10 000 publication abstracts in 5 s.
