Optical Spectroscopy of the Surface Population of the rho Ophiuchi Molecular Cloud: The First Wave of Star Formation
We present the results of optical spectroscopy of 139 stars obtained with the
Hydra multi-object spectrograph. The objects extend over a 1.3 square degree
area surrounding the main cloud of the rho Oph complex. The objects were
selected from narrowband images to have H alpha in emission. Using the presence
of strong H alpha emission, lithium absorption, location in the
Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, or previously reported x-ray emission, we were
able to identify 88 objects as young stars associated with the cloud. Strong H
alpha emission was confirmed in 39 objects with line widths consistent with
their origin in magnetospheric accretion columns. Two of the strongest
emission-line objects are young, x-ray emitting brown dwarf candidates with M8
spectral types. Comparisons of the bolometric luminosities and effective
temperatures with theoretical models suggest a medianage for this population of
2.1 Myr which is signifcantly older than the ages derived for objects in the
cloud core. It appears that these stars formed contemporaneously with low mass
stars in the Upper Scorpius subgroup, likely triggered by massive stars in the

Pleural Fluid Mesothelin as an Adjunct to the Diagnosis of Pleural Malignant Mesothelioma
Rationale:. The diagnosis of pleural malignant mesothelioma (MM) by effusion cytology may be difficult and is currently controversial. Effusion mesothelin levels are increased in patients with MM but the clinical role of this test is uncertain. Objectives:. To determine the clinical value of measuring mesothelin levels in pleural effusion supernatant to aid diagnosis of MM. Methods and Measurements. Pleural effusion samples were collected prospectively from 1331 consecutive patients. Mesothelin levels were determined by commercial ELISA in effusions and their relationship to concurrent pathology reporting and final clinical diagnosis was determined. Results:. 2156 pleural effusion samples from 1331 individuals were analysed. The final clinical diagnosis was 183 MM, 436 non-MM malignancy, and 712 nonmalignant effusions. Effusion mesothelin had a sensitivity of 67% for MM at 95% specificity. Mesothelin was elevated in over 47% of MM cases in effusions obtained before definitive diagnosis of MM was established. In the setting of inconclusive effusion cytology, effusion mesothelin had a positive predictive value of 79% for MM and 94% for malignancy. Conclusions:. A mesothelin-positive pleural effusion, irrespective of the identification of malignant cells, indicates the likely presence of malignancy and adds weight to the clinical rationale for further investigation to establish a malignant diagnosis
Cosmic distance-duality as probe of exotic physics and acceleration
In cosmology, distances based on standard candles (e.g. supernovae) and
standard rulers (e.g. baryon oscillations) agree as long as three conditions
are met: (1) photon number is conserved, (2) gravity is described by a metric
theory with (3) photons travelling on unique null geodesics. This is the
content of distance-duality (the reciprocity relation) which can be violated by
exotic physics. Here we analyse the implications of the latest cosmological
data sets for distance-duality. While broadly in agreement and confirming
acceleration we find a 2-sigma violation caused by excess brightening of SN-Ia
at z > 0.5, perhaps due to lensing magnification bias. This brightening has
been interpreted as evidence for a late-time transition in the dark energy but
because it is not seen in the d_A data we argue against such an interpretation.
Our results do, however, rule out significant SN-Ia evolution and extinction:
the "replenishing" grey-dust model with no cosmic acceleration is excluded at
more than 4-sigma despite this being the best-fit to SN-Ia data alone, thereby

Association between serum ferritin and mortality : findings from the USA, Japan and European Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study
Background: The Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes guidelines have cautioned against administering intravenous (IV) iron to hemodialysis patients with high serum ferritin levels due to safety concerns, but prior research has shown that the association between high ferritin and mortality could be attributed to confounding by malnutrition and inflammation. Our goal was to better understand the ferritin-mortality association and relative influence of IV iron and inflammation in the USA, where ferritin levels have recently increased dramatically, and in Europe and Japan, where ferritin levels are lower and anemia management practices differ.
Methods: Data from 18 261 patients in Phases 4 and 5 (2009-15) of the international Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study, a prospective cohort study, were analyzed. Using Cox regression, we modeled the association between baseline ferritin and 1-year mortality with restricted cubic splines and assessed the impact of potential confounders.
Results: Median ferritin levels were 718 ng/mL in the USA, 405 in Europe and 83 in Japan. High ferritin levels were associated with elevated mortality (relative to region-specific medians) in all three regions. The strength of this association was attenuated more by adjustment for malnutrition and inflammation than by IV iron and erythropoiesis-stimulating agent dose in each region.
Conclusion: The utility of high ferritin as a biomarker for clinical risk due to excess iron stores may be limited, although caution regarding IV iron dosing to higher upper ferritin targets remains warranted. Research to resolve biomarker criteria for iron dosing, and whether optimal anemia management strategies differ internationally, is still needed
Clouds and Chemistry in the Atmosphere of Extrasolar Planet HR8799b
Using the integral field spectrograph OSIRIS, on the Keck II telescope, broad
near-infrared H and K-band spectra of the young exoplanet HR8799b have been
obtained. In addition, six new narrow-band photometric measurements have been
taken across the H and K bands. These data are combined with previously
published photometry for an analysis of the planet's atmospheric properties.
Thick photospheric dust cloud opacity is invoked to explain the planet's red
near-IR colors and relatively smooth near-IR spectrum. Strong water absorption
is detected, indicating a Hydrogen-rich atmosphere. Only weak CH4 absorption is
detected at K band, indicating efficient vertical mixing and a disequilibrium
CO/CH4 ratio at photospheric depths. The H-band spectrum has a distinct
triangular shape consistent with low surface gravity. New giant planet
atmosphere models are compared to these data with best fitting bulk parameters,
Teff = 1100K +- 100 and log(g) = 3.5 +-0.5 (for solar composition). Given the
observed luminosity, log(Lobs/Lsun) ~ -5.1, these values correspond to a radius
of 0.75 Rjup (+0.17, -0.12) and mass ~ 0.72 Mjup (+2.6,-0.6) -- strikingly
inconsistent with interior/evolution models. Enhanced metallicity (up to ~ 10
times that of the Sun) along with thick clouds and non-equilibrium chemistry
are likely required to reproduce the complete ensemble of spectroscopic and
photometric data and the low effective temperatures (< 1000K) required by the

Mortality risk in patients on hemodiafiltration versus hemodialysis : a 'real-world' comparison from the DOPPS
Background. With its convective component, hemodiafiltration (HDF) provides better middle molecule clearance compared with hemodialysis (HD) and is postulated to improve survival. A previous analysis of Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (DOPPS) data in 1998-2001 found lower mortality rates for high replacement fluid volume HDF versus HD. Randomized controlled trials have not shown uniform survival advantage for HDF; in secondary (non-randomized) analyses, better outcomes were observed in patients receiving the highest convection volumes.
Methods. In a 'real-world' setting, we analyzed patients on dialysis >90 days from seven European countries in DOPPS Phases 4 and 5 (2009-15). Adjusted Cox regression was used to study HDF (versus HD) and mortality, overall and by replacement fluid volume.
Results. Among 8567 eligible patients, 2012 (23%) were on HDF, ranging from 42% in Sweden to 12% in Germany. Median follow-up was 1.5 years during which 1988 patients died. The adjusted mortality hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) was 1.14 (1.00-1.29) for any HDF versus HD and 1.08 (0.92-1.28) for HDF > 20 L replacement fluid volume versus HD. Similar results were found for cardiovascular and infection-related mortality. In an additional analysis aiming to avoid treatment-by-indication bias, we did not observe lower mortality rates in facilities usingmore HDF (versus HD).
Conclusions. Our results do not support the notion that HDF provides superior patient survival. Further trials designed to test the effect of high-volume HDF (versus lower volume HDF versus HD) on clinical outcomes are needed to adequately inform clinical practices
A Burgessian critique of nominalistic tendencies in contemporary mathematics and its historiography
We analyze the developments in mathematical rigor from the viewpoint of a
Burgessian critique of nominalistic reconstructions. We apply such a critique
to the reconstruction of infinitesimal analysis accomplished through the
efforts of Cantor, Dedekind, and Weierstrass; to the reconstruction of Cauchy's
foundational work associated with the work of Boyer and Grabiner; and to
Bishop's constructivist reconstruction of classical analysis. We examine the

UV Absorption Lines from High-Velocity Gas in the Vela Supernova Remnant: New insights from STIS Echelle Observations of HD72089
The star HD72089 is located behind the Vela supernova remnant and shows a
complex array of high and low velocity interstellar absorption features arising
from shocked clouds. A spectrum of this star was recorded over the wavelength
range 1196.4 to 1397.2 Angstroms at a resolving power lambda/Delta lambda =
110,000 and signal-to-noise ratio of 32 by STIS on the Hubble Space Telescope.
We have identified 7 narrow components of C I and have measured their relative
populations in excited fine-structure levels. Broader features at heliocentric
velocities ranging from -70 to +130 km/s are seen in C II, N I, O I, Si II, S
II and Ni II. In the high-velocity components, the unusually low abundances of
N I and O I, relative to S II and Si II, suggest that these elements may be
preferentially ionized to higher stages by radiation from hot gas immediately
