    Comparison of Supervised and Unsupervised Learning for Detecting Anomalies in Network Traffic

    Adversaries are always probing for vulnerable spots on the Internet so they can attack their target. By examining traffic at the firewall, we can look for anomalies that may represent these probes. To help select the right techniques we conduct comparisons of supervised and unsupervised machine learning on network flows to find sets of outliers flagged as potential threats. We apply Functional PCA and K-Means together versus Multilayer Perceptron on a real-world dataset of traffic prior to an NTP DDoS attack in January 2014; scanning activity was heightened during this pre-attack period. We partition data to evaluate detection powers of each technique and show that FPCA+Kmeans outperforms MLP. We also present a new variation of the circle plot for visualization of resulting outliers which we suggest excels at displaying multidimensional attributes of an individual IP\u27s behavior over time.     An Electrical and Computer Engineering Laboratory exercise has been included in the junior year fall term to partially bridge the theory to practice gap for multiple basic electrical and computer engineering topics. The laboratory investigates facets of power electronics and computer control for students who have recently been introduced to the theory of transistor bridge circuits for voltage polarity control in their electronics class, and digital pulse width modulation for DC motor speed control in their first computer logic class. After brief study of its specification, students follow a lab sequence to set up and instrument a commercial H-bridge to first record polarity and magnitude of output voltages under specified input conditions, and subsequently to observe DC motor response to the same inputs. DC power polarity and averaging through Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), as well as the collateral realities of brushed DC motor noise and logic versus power supply levels become clear to most student for the very first time

    An Unsupervised Approach to DDoS Attack Detection and Mitigation in Near-Real Time

    We present an approach for Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack detection and mitigation in near-real time. The adaptive unsupervised machine learning methodology is based on volumetric thresholding, Functional Principal Component Analysis, and K-means clustering (with tuning parameters for flexibility), which dissects the dataset into categories of outlier source IP addresses. A probabilistic risk assessment technique is used to assign “threat levels” to potential malicious actors. We use our approach to analyze a synthetic DDoS attack with ground truth, as well as the Network Time Protocol (NTP) amplification attack that occurred during January of 2014 at a large mountain-range university. We demonstrate the speed and capabilities of our technique through replay of the NTP attack. We show that we can detect and attenuate the DDoS within two minutes with significantly reduced volume throughout the six waves of the attack

    Electron localization by self-assembled GaSb/GaAs quantum dots.

    We have studied the photoluminescence from type-II GaSb/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots in magnetic fields up to 50 T. Our results show that at low laser power, electrons are more weakly bound to the dots than to the wetting layer, but that at high laser power, the situation is reversed. We attribute this effect to an enhanced Coulomb interaction between a single electron and dots that are multiply charged with holes

Background: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in men with prostate cancer (PCa) results in adverse effects, including reduced muscle strength and physical function, potentially compromising daily functioning. We examined whether it was more efficacious to commence exercise at the onset of ADT rather than later in treatment to counter declines in strength and physical function. Methods: One-hundred-and-four men with PCa (68.3 ± 7.0 years) initiating ADT were randomised to immediate exercise (IMX, n = 54) or delayed exercise (DEL, n = 50) for 12 months. IMX comprised 6 months of supervised resistance/aerobic/impact exercise initiated at the onset of ADT with a 6-month follow-up. DEL comprised 6 months of usual care followed by 6 months of resistance/aerobic/impact exercise. Upper and lower body muscle strength and physical function were assessed at baseline, 6 and 12 months. Results: There was a significant difference for all strength measures at 6 months favouring IMX (P \u3c 0.001), with net differences in leg press, seated row and chest press strength of 19.9 kg (95% CI, 12.3–27.5 kg), 5.6 kg (3.8–7.4 kg) and 4.3 kg (2.7–5.8 kg), respectively. From 7 to 12 months, DEL increased in all strength measures (P \u3c 0.001), with no differences between groups at 12 months. Similarly, physical function improved (P \u3c 0.001) in IMX compared with DEL at 6 months for the 6-m fast walk (−0.2, 95% CI −0.3 to −0.1 s), 400-m walk (−9.7, −14.8 to −4.6 s), stair climb (−0.4, −0.6 to −0.2 s) and chair rise (−1.0, −1.4 to −0.7 s), with no differences between groups by 12 months, except for the 6-m fast walk (P \u3c 0.001). Conclusion: Exercise either at the onset or after 6 months of ADT preserves/enhances muscle strength and physical function. However, to avoid initial treatment-related adverse effects on strength and function, exercise therapy should be implemented with initiation of ADT

    Nationwide industry-led community exercise program for men with locally advanced, relapsed, or metastatic prostate cancer on androgen-deprivation therapy

    Purpose Androgen-deprivation therapy in patients with prostate cancer (PCa) is associated with considerable side effects and secondary comorbidities such as overweight/obesity and cardiovascular disease. The aim of thisstudy was to investigate the effectiveness of an industry-led, treatment-integrated, community-based exercise program on outcomes of body weight, cardiovascular health, and physical function. Patients and Methods PCa patients with locally advanced, relapsed, or metastatic disease receiving leuprorelin acetate were enrolled across multiple sites in Australia and assigned supervised group exercise undertaken weekly or biweekly (ie, 16 exercise sessions in total) for 10-18 weeks, consisting of aerobic and resistance training performed at moderate-to-vigorous intensity. Results Between 2014 and 2020, 760 participants completed the baseline and follow-up assessment. Participants were age 48-94 years, and most were either overweight (42.1%) or obese (38.1%). Program compliance was high, with 90% of participants completing all 16 exercise sessions. There was a small but significant reduction in waist circumference (–0.9 cm; 95% CI [–1.2 to –0.5]; P \u3c .001) and no change in weight or body mass index. Systolic (–3.7 mmHg; 95% CI [–4.8 to –2.6]; P \u3c .001) and diastolic (–1.7 mmHg; 95% CI [–2.3 to –1.0]; P \u3c .001) blood pressure were significantly lower after the program. Furthermore, significant improvements were seen in cardiorespiratory fitness and muscle strength (P \u3c .001). For most of the investigated outcomes, participants with poorer initial measures had the greatest benefit from participating in the program. Conclusion The community exercise program was feasible and effective in preventing weight gain, reducing blood pressure, and improving physical function in patients with PCa on androgen-deprivation therapy
