    Single-molecule study for a graphene-based nano-position sensor

    In this study we lay the groundwork for a graphene-based fundamental ruler at the nanoscale. It relies on the efficient energy-transfer mechanism between single quantum emitters and low-doped graphene monolayers. Our experiments, conducted with dibenzoterrylene (DBT) molecules, allow going beyond ensemble analysis due to the emitter photo-stability and brightness. A quantitative characterization of the fluorescence decay-rate modification is presented and compared to a simple model, showing agreement with the d−4d^{-4} dependence, a genuine manifestation of a dipole interacting with a 2D material. With DBT molecules, we can estimate a potential uncertainty in position measurements as low as 5nm in the range below 30nm

    Validity of neonatal jaundice evaluation by primary health-care workers and physicians in Karachi, Pakistan

    Objective: The Purpose of this study was to validate primary health-care workers\u27 and physicians\u27 visual assessment of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia in Karachi, Pakistan. Study Design: We compared primary health-care workers\u27 and physicians\u27 clinical identification of jaundice in infants = 15 mg per 100 ml (260 mu mol l(-1)) with 83.3% sensitivity and 50.5% specificity, neonates aged 1 to 6 days were identified with 76.2% sensitivity and 60.7% specificity. Physicians identified neonates aged 1 to 20 days with hyperbilirubimemia \u3e= 15 mg per 100 ml (260 mmol l(-1)) with 51.4% sensitivity and 90.7% specificity, and neonates aged 1 to 6 days with 50% sensitivity and 88.5 % specificity. The primary health-care workers\u27 and physicians\u27 assessments showed fair interobserver agreement (k statistic 0.29). Conclusion: Primary health-care workers identified hyperbilirubinemic neonates with adequate sensitivity. With proper training and supervision, their assessment could improve the referral of hyperbilirubinemic neonates in low-resource settings in the developing world

    An evaluation of topical and local anesthesia in phacoemulsification

    Objective: To assess the comparative efficacy of topical and local anesthesia in phacoemulsification.MATERIAL AND Methods: The medical records of 186 men and women between the ages of 45-85 years, who underwent elective cataract surgery by phacoemulsification technique, under the care of one surgeon, over a period of one year, from March 1999-March 2000 were reviewed.Results: Of 186 patients who underwent small incision, self-healing phacoemulsification cataract surgery, 124 received topical and 62 local anesthesia. The most common cataract types were nuclear sclerosis. The duration of surgery with topical anesthesia was shorter. Sutures and eye padding were more frequently applied for procedures done under local anesthesia. Uncorrected visual acuity in the first post-op week was between 20/20-20/50 for 53.6% of the cases done under topical compared to 30.9% in local anesthesia. A similar trend was noted in the visual acuity one month post operatively.CONCLUSION: The uncorrected visual acuity improves faster and the duration of surgery is shorter when topical anesthesia is used

    Digital health and inequalities in access to health services in Bangladesh: Mixed methods study

    Background: Globally, the rapid growth of technology and its use as a development solution has generated much interest in digital health. In line with global trends, Bangladesh is also integrating technology into its health system to address disparities. Strong political endorsement and uptake of digital platforms by the government has influenced the rapid proliferation of such initiatives in the country. This paper aims to examine the implications of digital health on access to health care in Bangladesh, considering who uses electronic devices to access health information and services and why. Objective: This study aims to understand how access to health care and related information through electronic means (digital health) is affected by sociodemographic determinants (ie, age, gender, education, socioeconomic status, and personal and household ownership of mobile phones) in a semiurban community in Bangladesh. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 854 households (between October 2013 and February 2014) and 20 focus group discussions (between February 2017 and March 2017) were conducted to understand (1) who owns electronic devices; (2) who, among the owners, uses these to access health information and services and why; (3) the awareness of electronic sources of health information; and (4) the role of intermediaries (family members or peers who helped to look for health information using electronic devices). Results: A total of 90.3% (771/854) of households (471/854, 55.2% of respondents) owned electronic devices, mostly mobile phones. Among these, 7.2% (34/471) used them to access health information or services. Middle-aged (35-54 years), female, less (or not) educated, and poorer people used these devices the least (α=.05, α is the level of significance). The lack of awareness, discomfort, differences with regular care-seeking habits, lack of understanding and skills, and proximity to a health facility were the main reasons for not using devices to access digital health. Conclusions: Although influenced by sociodemographic traits, access to digital health is not merely related to device ownership and technical skill. Rather, it is a combination of general health literacy, phone ownership, material resources, and technical skill as well as social recognition of health needs and inequity. This study’s findings should serve as a basis for better integrating technology within the health system and ensuring equitable access to health care

    Stability of biocontrol products carrying Candida sake CPA-1 in starch derivatives as a function of water activity

    [EN] The preservation and shelf-life of formulations of the biocontrol agent Candida sake CPA-1 and starch derivatives as a function of water activity (aW) were studied in terms of the physical stability of the products and cell viability. Formulations of biocontrol products (BCPs), based on combinations of potato starch and pregelatinised potato starch (F1 and F2) or maltodextrines (MD) (F3) containing cell protectants, were obtained by fluidised-bed drying. The carriers and the formulated products were stored at 20°C under different aW conditions. The water sorption and water plasticization behaviour of the different products were analysed through the water sorption isotherms and glass transition temperatures (Tg). Likewise, the viability of C. sake over time was determined as a function of the aW. The solubility of the products was also assessed. Although formulations stored at 20°C and low aW (≤ 0.33) exhibited a better shelf-life, a significant decrease in cell survival ratio after 180 storage days was observed. Cold storage (5°C) was required to better maintain the cell viability, thus prolonging the shelf-life of BCPs. Formulations containing MD were the most effective at preserving cell viability and also exhibited the highest water solubility. All the formulations were physically stable at ambient temperature; therefore, the cell stability is the critical point at which to establish both the aW levels and temperature during storage.     Anionic Photofragmentation of CO: A Selective Probe of Core-Level Resonances

    Anion-yield spectroscopy using x rays is shown to be a selective probe of molecular core-level processes, providing unique experimental verification of shape resonances. For CO, partial anion and cation yields are presented for photon energies near the C K edge. The O- yield exhibits features above threshold related only to doubly excited states, in contrast to cation yields which also exhibit pronounced structure due to the well-known σ* shape resonance. Because the shape resonance is completely suppressed for O-, anion spectroscopy thus constitutes a highly selective probe, yielding information unobtainable with absorption or electron spectroscopy

    Understanding the role of shame and its consequences in female hypersexual behaviours: A pilot study

    Background and aims: Hypersexuality and sexual addiction among females is a little understudied phenomenon. Shame is thought to be intrinsic to hypersexual behaviours, especially in women. Therefore, the aim of this study was to understand both hypersexual behaviours and consequences of hypersexual behaviours and their respective contributions to shame in a British sample of females (n = 102). Methods: Data were collected online via Survey Monkey. Results: Results showed the Sexual Behaviour History (SBH) and the Hypersexual Disorder Questionnaire (HDQ) had significant positive correlation with scores on the Shame Inventory. The results indicated that hypersexual behaviours (HBI and HDQ) were able to predict a small percentage of the variability in shame once sexual orientation (heterosexual vs. non-heterosexual) and religious beliefs (belief vs. no belief) were controlled for. Results also showed there was no evidence that religious affiliation and/or religious beliefs had an influence on the levels of hypersexuality and consequences of sexual behaviours as predictors of shame. Conclusions: While women in the UK are rapidly shifting to a feminist way of thinking with or without technology, hypersexual disorder may often be misdiagnosed and misunderstood because of the lack of understanding and how it is conceptualised.
