    Alone or Together in the Neighbourhood? School Choice and Families’ Access to Local Social Networks

    This study explores how the everyday geographies of city life and families’ access to social networks in the neighbourhood influence families’ school choices. The data consist of thematic interviews with parents of 8–14-year-old children (n = 170) in three urban areas located in the cities of Paris (France), Milan (Italy) and Espoo (Finland) and are analysed via qualitative content analysis. The findings indicate that the families’ access to local social networks influences the reasoning behind school choice to the local school. The children’s relationships with other children and adults in the neighbourhood are considered important, but additionally, the parents’ networks with other parents in the area, mediated by the school, play their role. School choices as practices should therefore be analysed not merely as choices of an institution, as they comprise various aspects concerning the surrounding neighbourhood as a physical and social space.Peer reviewe

    Adopté à l’initiative du Parlement, l’article 25 de la loi n° 2009-1572 du 17 décembre 2009 relative à la lutte contre la fracture numérique dispose que : « Dans les six mois suivant la publication de la présente loi, le Gouvernement remet au Parlement un rapport sur le fossé numérique afin d’apporter des précisions quant aux différentes catégories de la population n’ayant ni équipement informatique, ni accès à Internet dans leur foyer. Ce document étudie également le rapport qu’entretiennent les “natifs du numérique” avec Internet dans le but d’améliorer les connaissances quant aux conséquences, sur le travail scolaire notamment, de l’usage d’Internet. Il dégage aussi les pistes de réflexion pour les actions de formation à destination de ces publics et veille également à identifier les acteurs associatifs œuvrant pour la réduction du fossé numérique. Enfin, il établit les conditions de mise en service d’abonnements Internet à tarif social.

    Experimental study of bidirectional seiching in an open-channel, lateral cavity in the time and frequency domain

    This experimental laboratory study presents a detailed analysis of the surface oscillations inside a square cavity connected laterally to an open channel. For an approaching steady and one-dimensional main stream with a high (subcritical) Froude number, interaction with the dead water volume in the cavity area triggers high-amplitude free-surface oscillations, denoted seiches. In the present study, the length of the square cavity equals half of the combined width of the cavity and the main channel. This particular geometry enables two-dimensional or bidirectional seiching with standing waves being excited in both directions simultaneously. In this work, the (relative) magnitude of the different seiching modes (transverse and longitudinal) is measured and analyzed for a range of flow conditions with varying Froude number. The current experimental results confirm earlier findings indicating that the magnitude and dominance of the longitudinal seiching mode (with respect to the transverse mode) grows with increasing Froude number of the main stream. Additionally, a wavelet analysis in the time and frequency domains reveals that the amplitude of the two modes fluctuates significantly in the course of a single experiment, such that seiching cannot be considered a steady phenomenon. Therefore, two alternative strategies are presented to quantify the amplitude of both modes using a more time-localized approach that is less affected by the intermittent behavior of seiching. Although more research is necessary to fully understand what determines the dominant mode at a given moment, an in-depth analysis of the surface recordings at multiple locations in the cavity suggests that the transition from transverse to longitudinal seiching (and vice versa) is related to the phase difference between the bidirectional seiching waves at the (inner) corners of the cavity

    Lung transplantation for interstitial lung disease in idiopathic inflammatory myositis: A cohort study

Here, our objective was to assess survival and prog-nostic factors in lung transplant recipients with IIM-ILD. We retrospectively reviewed data for 64 patients who underwent lung transplantation between 2009 and 2021 at 19 European centers. Patient survival was the primary outcome. At transplantation, the median age was 53 [46–59] years, 35 (55%) patients were male, 31 (48%) had clas-sical IIM, 25 (39%) had rapidly progressive ILD, and 21 (33%) were in a high- priority transplant allocation program. Survival rates after 1, 3, and 5 years were 78%, 73%, and 70%, respectively. During follow-up (median, 33 [7–63] months), 23% of patients developed chronic lung allograft dysfunction. Compared to amyopathic IIM, classical IIM was characterized by longer disease duration, higher-intensity immunosuppres-sion before transplantation, and significantly worse posttransplantation survival. Five (8%) patients had a clinical IIM relapse, with mild manifestations. No patient expe-rienced ILD recurrence in the allograft. Posttransplantation survival in IIM-ILD was similar to that in international all- cause- transplantation registries. The main factor as-sociated with worse survival was a history of muscle involvement (classical IIM). In lung transplant recipients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathy, survival was similar to that in all-cause transplantation and was worse in patients with muscle involvement compared to those with the amyopathic disease

    SNP discovery and genetic mapping using genotyping by sequencing of whole genome genomic DNA from a pea RIL population

    International audienceBackground - Progress in genetics and breeding in pea still suffers from the limited availability of molecular resources. SNP markers that can be identified through affordable sequencing processes, without the need for prior genome reduction or a reference genome to assemble sequencing data would allow the discovery and genetic mapping of thousands of molecular markers. Such an approach could significantly speed up genetic studies and marker assisted breeding for non-model species. Results - A total of 419,024 SNPs were discovered using HiSeq whole genome sequencing of four pea lines, followed by direct identification of SNP markers without assembly using the discoSnp tool. Subsequent filtering led to the identification of 131,850 highly designable SNPs, polymorphic between at least two of the four pea lines. A subset of 64,754 SNPs was called and genotyped by short read sequencing on a subpopulation of 48 RILs from the cross 'Baccara' x 'PI180693'. This data was used to construct a WGGBS-derived pea genetic map comprising 64,263 markers. This map is collinear with previous pea consensus maps and therefore with the Medicago truncatula genome. Sequencing of four additional pea lines showed that 33 % to 64 % of the mapped SNPs, depending on the pairs of lines considered, are polymorphic and can therefore be useful in other crosses. The subsequent genotyping of a subset of 1000 SNPs, chosen for their mapping positions using a KASP™ assay, showed that almost all generated SNPs are highly designable and that most (95 %) deliver highly qualitative genotyping results. Using rather low sequencing coverages in SNP discovery and in SNP inferring did not hinder the identification of hundreds of thousands of high quality SNPs. Conclusions - The development and optimization of appropriate tools in SNP discovery and genetic mapping have allowed us to make available a massive new genomic resource in pea. It will be useful for both fine mapping within chosen QTL confidence intervals and marker assisted breeding for important traits in pea improvement

    AB Aur, a Rosetta stone for studies of planet formation (I): chemical study of a planet-forming disk

    AB Aur is a Herbig Ae star that hosts a prototypical transition disk. The disk shows a plethora of features connected with planet formation mechanisms. Understanding the physical and chemical characteristics of these features is crucial to advancing our knowledge of planet formation. We aim to characterize the gaseous disk around the Herbig Ae star AB Aur. A complete spectroscopic study was performed using NOEMA to determine the physical and chemical conditions. We present new observations of the continuum and 12CO, 13CO, C18O, H2CO, and SO lines. We used the integrated intensity maps and stacked spectra to derive estimates of the disk temperature. By combining our 13CO and C18O observations, we computed the gas-to-dust ratio along the disk. We also derived column density maps for the different species and used them to compute abundance maps. The results of our observations were compared with Nautilus astrochemical models. We detected continuum emission in a ring that extends from 0.6 to 2.0 arcsec, peaking at 0.97 and with a strong azimuthal asymmetry. The molecules observed show different spatial distributions, and the peaks of the distributions are not correlated with the binding energy. Using H2CO and SO lines, we derived a mean disk temperature of 39 K. We derived a gas-to-dust ratio that ranges from 10 to 40. The comparison with Nautilus models favors a disk with a low gas-to-dust ratio (40) and prominent sulfur depletion. From a very complete spectroscopic study of the prototypical disk around AB Aur, we derived, for the first time, the gas temperature and the gas-to-dust ratio along the disk, providing information that is essential to constraining hydrodynamical simulations.Moreover, we explored the gas chemistry and, in particular, the sulfur depletion. The derived sulfur depletion is dependent on the assumed C/O ratio. Our data are better explained with C/O ~ 0.7 and S/H=8e-8.Comment: 13 figures, 6 table

    Advanced backcross QTL analysis and comparative mapping with RIL QTL studies and GWAS provide an overview of QTL and marker haplotype diversity for resistance to Aphanomyces root rot in pea (Pisum sativum)

    Aphanomyces euteiches is the most damaging soilborne pea pathogen in France. Breeding of pea resistant varieties combining a diversity of quantitative trait loci (QTL) is a promising strategy considering previous research achievements in dissecting polygenic resistance to A. euteiches. The objective of this study was to provide an overview of the diversity of QTL and marker haplotypes for resistance to A. euteiches, by integrating a novel QTL mapping study in advanced backcross (AB) populations with previous QTL analyses and genome-wide association study (GWAS) using common markers. QTL analysis was performed in two AB populations derived from the cross between the susceptible spring pea variety “Eden” and the two new sources of partial resistance “E11” and “LISA”. The two AB populations were genotyped using 993 and 478 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers, respectively, and phenotyped for resistance to A. euteiches in controlled conditions and in infested fields at two locations. GWAS and QTL mapping previously reported in the pea-Aphanomyces collection and from four recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations, respectively, were updated using a total of 1,850 additional markers, including the markers used in the Eden x E11 and Eden x LISA populations analysis. A total of 29 resistance-associated SNPs and 171 resistance QTL were identified by GWAS and RIL or AB QTL analyses, respectively, which highlighted 10 consistent genetic regions confirming the previously reported QTL. No new consistent resistance QTL was detected from both Eden x E11 and Eden x LISA AB populations. However, a high diversity of resistance haplotypes was identified at 11 linkage disequilibrium (LD) blocks underlying consistent genetic regions, especially in 14 new sources of resistance from the pea-Aphanomyces collection. An accumulation of favorable haplotypes at these 11 blocks was confirmed in the most resistant pea lines of the collection. This study provides new SNP markers and rare haplotypes associated with the diversity of Aphanomyces root rot resistance QTL investigated, which will be useful for QTL pyramiding strategies to increase resistance levels in future pea varieties
