    Bubble collapse near porous plates

    A gas or vapour bubble near a solid boundary collapses towards the boundary due to the asymmetry induced by the nearby boundary. High surface pressure and shear stress from this collapse can damage, or clean, the surface. A porous boundary, such as a filter, would act similarly to a solid boundary but with reduced asymmetry and thus reduced effect. Prior research has measured the cleaning effect of bubbles on filters using ultrasonic cleaning, but it is not known how the bubble dynamics are fundamentally affected by the porosity of the surface. We address this question experimentally by investigating how the standoff distance, porosity, pore size, and pore shape affect two collapse properties: bubble displacement and bubble rebound size. We show that these properties depend primarily on the standoff distance and porosity of the boundary and extend a previously developed numerical model that approximates this behaviour. Using the numerical model in combination with experimental data, we show that bubble displacement and bubble rebound size each collapse onto respective single curves

    Spatial rogue waves in photorefractive SBN crystals

    We report on the excitation of large-amplitude waves, with a probability of around 1% of total peaks, on a photorefractive SBN crystal by using a simple experimental setup at room temperature. We excite the system using a narrow Gaussian beam and observe different dynamical regimes tailored by the value and time rate of an applied voltage. We identify two main dynamical regimes: a caustic one for energy spreading and a speckling one for peak emergence. Our observations are well described by a two-dimensional Schr\"odinger model with saturable local nonlinearity.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Un perro pastor alemán macho de 7 meses de edad se presentó a consulta por la aparición de un abultamiento marcado en los músculos flexores de la extremidad posterior derecha. El estado general era normal y no había otros síntomas. A la palpación había dolor moderado, la masa estaba bien delimitada y tenía consistencia blanda pero con cierta tensión que sugería la existencia de una cavidad rellena de líquido o gas. Se sospechó de un origen traumático y se trató inicialmente con prednisona, a dosis antiinflamatoria, y diuréticos. Después de cinco días el tamaño de la lesión no se había reducido y una biopsia con aguja fina obtuvo un exuda do serohemorrágico. Se colocó un drenaje penrose y se realizaron varias biopsias para histopatología. Microscópicamente la lesión estaba formada por tejido fibroso aparentemente aséptico. Un examen radiográfico posterior demostró la presencia de calcificación periférica

    Generalized Limits for Parameter Sensitivity via Quantum Ziv-Zakai Bound

    We study the generalized limit for parameter sensitivity in quantum estimation theory considering the effects of repeated and adaptive measurements. Based on the quantum Ziv-Zakai bound, we derive some lower bounds for parameter sensitivity when the Hamiltonian of system is unbounded and when the adaptive measurements are implemented on the system. We also prove that the parameter sensitivity is bounded by the limit of the minimum detectable parameter. In particular, we examine several known states in quantum phase estimation with non-interacting photons, and show that they can not perform better than Heisenberg limit in a much simpler way with our result.Comment: 8pages, 5 figure

    Quantum Rod Emission Coupled to Plasmonic Lattice Resonances: A Collective Directional Source of Polarized Light

    We demonstrate that an array of optical antennas may render a thin layer of randomly oriented semiconductor nanocrystals into an enhanced and highly directional source of polarized light. The array sustains collective plasmonic lattice resonances which are in spectral overlap with the emission of the nanocrystals over narrow angular regions. Consequently, different photon energies of visible light are enhanced and beamed into definite directions.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Coexistence of Paramagnetic-Charge-Ordered and Ferromagnetic-Metallic Phases in La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 evidenced by ESR

    Throughout a complete Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) and magnetization study of La0.5Ca0.5MnO3, we discuss about the nature of the complex phase-segregated state established in this compound below T~210 K. Between TN<T<TC, the ESR spectra shows two lines characteristic of two different magnetic phases. From the resonance field (Hr) derived for each line we argue that the incommensurate-charge-ordering phase (ICO) which coexists with ferromagnetic-metallic (FMM) clusters in this temperature interval, is mainly paramagnetic and not antiferromagnetic. The FMM/ICO ratio can be tuned with a relatively small field, which suggests that the internal energy associated with those phases is very similar. Below TN, there is an appreciable FM contribution to the magnetization and the ESR spectra indicates the presence of FM clusters in an antiferromagnetic matrix (canted). Our results show that ESR could be a very useful tool to investigate the nature of the phase-separated state now believed to play a fundamental role in the physics of mixed valent manganites.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

    The Complex ATM Position Paper is the common research vehicle that defines the high-level, strategic scientific vision for the ComplexWorld Network. The purpose of this document is to provide an orderly and consistent scientific framework for the WP-E complexity theme. The specific objectives of the position paper are to: - analyse the state of the art within the different research areas relevant to the network, identifying the major accomplishments and providing a comprehensive set of references, including the main publications and research projects; - include a complete list of , a list of application topics, and an analysis of which techniques are best suited to each one of those applications; - identify and perform an in-depth analysis of the most promising research avenues and the major research challenges lying at the junction of ATM and complex systems domains, with particular attention to their impact and potential benefits for the ATM community; - identify areas of common interest and synergies with other SESAR activities, with special attention to the research topics covered by other WP-E networks. An additional goal for future versions of this position paper is to develop an indicative roadmap on how these research challenges should be accomplished, providing a guide on how to leverage on different aspects of the complexity research in Air Transport
