Critical thinking skills for diagnosis process application from the perspective of nursing students and professors

Identify, from the experiences of nursing students and their professors, the critical thinking skills necessary for applying the diagnosis process to clinical practice. Descriptive-exploratory with qualitative approach. The study was conducted at a higher education institution in the south of Brazil, after approval from the Research Ethics Committee, under CAEE No 72294917.7.0000.5347. It had the participation of five nursing students and four nursing professors through focal group sessions. The content analysis technique was used for data analysis. The most remarkable holistic critical thinking skills identified from the point of view of the nursing students were: analysis and knowledge; from the professors' perspective, they were: analysis, information search, clinical experience, knowledge transformation, contextual perspective, intuition, prediction and comprehension. With the findings of this research, professors will be capable of implementing strategies focused on the individual needs of students in order to qualify teaching practices as to the nursing diagnosis process

Functional Renormalization Group flows on Friedman-Lema\^{\i}tre-Robertson-Walker backgrounds

We reanalyze the construction of the gravitational functional renormalization group equation tailored to the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner formulation emphasizing its connection to the covariant formulation. The results obtained from projecting the renormalization group flow onto the Einstein-Hilbert action are reviewed in detail and we provide a novel example illustrating how the formalism may be connected to the Causal Dynamical Triangulations approach to quantum gravity.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure

Violencia contra las mujeres: renunciar a la reclamación

Objetivo: identificar as causas da desistência da denuncia pela mulher vítima de violência. Metodologia: Realizado uma revisão sistemática de abordagem qualitativa acerca a desistência da denúncia. A análise de dados foi realizada a partir da Análise de Conteúdo proposta por Bardin. Resultados: são diversos, os motivos da desistência da denúncia, dentre eles influencia direta e indireta de terceiros, falta de conhecimento dos seus direitos, assim como diversos sentimentos no decorrer do processo de vitimização. Conclusão: a enfermagem tem o papel de acolher essa mulher corretamente, dando todo o apoio necessário, alertando e mostrando seus direitos, assim como encaminhá-la aos centros de referência para um atendimento especializado e explicando a importância de não desistir da denúncia do agressor.Objective: To identify the causes of the withdrawal of the complaint by the woman victim of violence. Methodology: Conducted a systematic review of qualitative approach on the withdrawal of the complaint. Data analysis was performed based on the content analysis proposed by Bardin. Results: are many of the reasons for withdrawal of the complaint, including direct and indirect influences of others, lack of knowledge of their rights as well as various feelings during the process of victimization. Conclusion: The nursing role is to properly care for this woman, giving all necessary support, alerting and showing their rights as well as refer you to reference centers for specialized care and explaining the importance of not withdrawing the complaint of the aggressor.Objetivo: Identificar las causas de la retirada de la denuncia por la mujer víctima de la violencia. Metodología: Se realiza una revisión sistemática de enfoque cualitativo en la retirada de la denuncia. Se realizó el análisis de datos a partir del análisis de contenido propuesto por Bardin. Resultados: son muchas de las razones de la retirada de la denuncia, incluyendo las influencias directas e indirectas de los demás, la falta de conocimiento de sus derechos, así como diversos sentimientos durante el proceso de victimización. Conclusión: El papel de la enfermería es cuidar adecuadamente a esta mujer, dándole todo el apoyo necesario, alertas y mostrando sus derechos, así como referirse hacer referencia a centros de atención especializada y explicar la importancia de no retirar la denuncia del agresor

Steering clear from ‘lost in translation’ : cross-cultural translation, adaptation, and validation of critical thinking mindset self-rating form to university students

Critical Thinking is a transversal skill needed to face current and future challenges, longed for in school, work, and life. Paradoxically, such relevance does not always translate into tangible efforts to measure and promote it. We present the cross-cultural translation, adaptation, and validation process of Critical Thinking Mindset Self-Rating Form to Portuguese university students. This study followed three phases: translation and adaptation of the form to Portuguese; a pilot study using the think-aloud technique, to assure the form’s comprehensibility and accuracy; a second pilot study to validate that preliminary version. According to results, the translation showed validity and reliability. In the long-run, this version may be used by teachers as a formative assessment tool, to show university students what is their general disposition towards thinking critically and, from there, to create opportunities for reflection and transformation, thus contributing to the realization of Critical Thinking in the classroom and in campus

Dysphagia in patients undergoing anterior cervical surgery

Dysphagia is one of the complications of anterior cervical surgery. Although common, few articles were published on this subject. Its incidence and duration varie depending on the author. We show a prospective study, analyzing the incidence, duration and quality of the dysphagia after anterior cervical surgery.A disfagia é uma das complicações pós-operatórias da cirurgia cervical anterior. Apesar de freqüente, foram publicados poucos estudos sobre o assunto. Sua incidência e duração variam conforme o autor. La teoría de Florence Nightingale y sus contribuciones al pensamiento crítico holístico en enfermería

Objetivo: refletir sobre o legado de Florence Nightingale e descrever suas contribuições para o pensamento crítico holístico na enfermagem. Métodos: trata-se de uma reflexão teórica, para a qual serviram de base produções científicas sobre a teoria ambientalista de Florence Nightingale, publicadas em periódicos nacionais e internacionais. Resultados: a filosofia e os ensinamentos de Florence Nightingale enfatizam que a enfermeira deve usar o cérebro, o coração e as mãos na criação de ambientes de cura, para cuidar do corpo do paciente, de sua mente e de seu espírito. A enfermagem, desde a época de Nightingale, vem construindo o paradigma holístico, em todas as escolas de pensamento, com vistas a uma abordagem humanística do ser humano em sua indivisível relação com o ambiente. Considerações finais: as contribuições de Florence ao pensamento crítico holístico na enfermagem são evidentes, constituindo o diferencial do enfermeiro na prática clínica.Objective: to reflect on Florence Nightingale’s legacy and describe her contributions to critical holistic thinking in nursing. Methods: this is a theoretical reflection, for which scientific productions on Florence Nightingale’s environmental theory, as published in national and international journals, were based. Results: Florence Nightingale’s philosophy and teachings emphasize that the nurse must use her brain, heart and hands to create healing environments to care for the patient’s body, mind and spirit. Nursing, since the time of Nightingale, has been building the holistic paradigm, in all schools of thought, with a view to a humanistic approach to the human being in their indivisible relationship with the environment. Final considerations: Florence’s contributions to holistic critical thinking in nursing are evident, constituting nurses’ differential in clinical practice.Objetivo: reflexionar sobre el legado de Florence Nightingale y describir sus contribuciones al pensamiento crítico holístico en enfermería. Métodos: se trata de una reflexión teórica, para la cual se basaron producciones científicas sobre la teoría ambiental de Florence Nightingale, publicadas en revistas nacionales e internacionales. NURSING PROCESS: IMPLICATIONS FOR THE SAFETY OF SURGICAL PATIENTS

El objetivo de este estudio fue reflejar sobre el proceso de enfermería y sus implicaciones para la seguridad del paciente en el centro quirúrgico. Se trata de una reflexión basada en las premisas teóricas y literatura científica acerca del tema. La seguridad del paciente ha sido tema de discusión desde el siglo XIX con objeto de alcanzar la calidad asistencial en las instituciones hospitalarias. El Proceso de Enfermería es un instrumento metodológico y una valiosa tecnología leve-dura a ser utilizada para garantizar la seguridad en el contexto de las prácticas de enfermería. Sin embargo, debe ser aplicado con calidad y en su conjunto, en línea con los objetivos institucionales para así promover la seguridad del paciente.The objective in this study was to reflect on the nursing process and its implications for surgical patients. This reflection is based on the theoretical premises and scientific literature on the theme. Patient safety has been discussed since the 19 th century to achieve high-quality care at hospital institutions. The Nursing Process is a methodological instrument and a valuable light-hard technology to guarantee safety in the context of the nursing practices. It should be applied qualitatively and holistically though, in line with the institutional objectives, with a view to promoting patient safety.O objetivo deste estudo foi refletir sobre o processo de enfermagem e suas implicações para a segurança do paciente no centro cirúrgico. TRANSLATION, TRANSCULTURAL ADAPTATION, VALIDATION OF THE HOLISTIC CRITICAL THINKING SCORING RUBRIC TO BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE

Objective: translation, transcultural adaptation, and validation of the Holistic Critical Thinking Scoring Rubric, original from the United States, to Brazilian Portuguese. Method: methodological study comprising the following steps: translation by 3 independent translators, transcultural adaptation by a Committee of 6 Nurses Experts; and validation, with the participation, in the pre-test, of 30 academics and 3 teachers-evaluators of Nursing field. The validity and reliability of the tool were verified by Kappa test. Results: the Portuguese version of the tool obtained a Kappa test score of 0.82 in the pre-test group. There was strong significant agreement among the evaluators. Conclusion: The Brazilian version of the Holistic Critical Thinking Scoring Rubric is a valid and reliable tool to evaluate the holistic critical thinking of Nursing academics at different levels of training, especially using active teaching methodologies
