    Changes in Carbohydrate and Nutrient Contents Throughout a Reproductive Cycle Indicate that Phosphorus is a Limiting Nutrient in the Epiphytic Bromeliad, Werauhia sanguinolenta

    • Background and Aims This study examined the physiological basis of the cost of reproduction in the epiphytic bromeliad Werauhia sanguinolenta, growing in situ in a tropical lowland forest in Panama. • Methods Entire mature plants were sampled repeatedly over the course of 2 years, which represents the common interval between reproductive events. Due to the uncertainty concerning the appropriate currency of resource allocation to reproduction, the temporal changes of the contents of total non-structural carbohydrates (TNC) and of all major nutrient elements in different plant parts were studied (stems, green leaves, non-green leaf bases, roots and reproductive structures when present). • Key Results Although TNC varied with time in all compartments, this variation was more related to seasonal fluctuations than to reproductive status. The contents of the nutrient elements, N, P, K, Mg and S, on the other hand, showed significant differences between reproductive and non-reproductive individuals, while Ca did not change with reproductive status. Differences in nutrient contents were most pronounced in stems. Seeds were particularly enriched in P, much less so in N and the other nutrient elements. Model calculations of nutrient fluxes indicate that a plant needs about 2 years to accumulate the amount of P invested in a fruit crop, while the estimated uptake rates for N were much faster. • Conclusions Since most mature individuals of this species fruit every other year, it is hypothesized that P is the prime limiting factor for reproduction. These findings therefore add to an increasing body of evidence that P rather than N is limiting growth and reproduction in vascular epiphyte

    From Process to Practice: Towards a Practice-Based Model of Digital Innovation

    The ongoing digitalization of many corporate functions, including the innovation process, brings about fundamental changes that urge us to rethink established theories. Facilitating digital innovation requires a deep understanding of the actual practices that are carried out by innovating people with the help of artifacts. In this paper, we study the use of artifacts and illustrate their different roles in the underlying innovation practices to provide rich insights into digital innovation from a practice perspective. Grounded in a nearly three year-long, qualitative case study at two Swiss software companies and an extensive set of empirical data, this paper conceptualizes four interrelated digital innovation practices, namely making sense of an idea, aligning mental models, negotiating solution paths, and crafting an idea. We suggest a practice-based model of digital innovation, specify a set of practices for enabling digital innovation in organizations, and clarify the role of artifacts in digital innovation practices

    Storytelling is an important but often underestimated practice in software engineering. Whereas existing research widely regards storytelling as creating a common understanding between developers and users, we argue that storytelling and prototyping are intertwined practices for innovators to persuade decision makers. Based on a two-year qualitative case study in two innovating software firms, we identify and dialectically examine practices of storytelling and prototyping. Our study implies that storytelling and prototyping should be integrated together into software engineering methods

    Order-Parameter Fluctuations in the Frustrated Heisenberg Model on the Square Lattice

    The T=0 dynamics of the two‐dimensional s=1/2 Heisenberg model with competing nearest‐neighbor (J 1) and next‐nearest‐neighbor (J 2) interactions is explored via the recursion method, specifically the frequency‐dependent fluctuations of the order parameters associated with some of the known or suspected ordering tendencies in this system, i.e., Néel, collinear, dimer, and chiral order. The results for the dynamic structure factors of the respective fluctuation operators show a strong indication of collinear order at J 2/J 1≳0.6 and a potential for dimer order at 0.5≲J 2/J 1≲0.6, whereas the chiral ordering tendency is observed to be considerably weaker

    Creating, Reinterpreting, Combining, Cuing: Paper Practices on the Shopfloor

    Despite the advent of a flurry of digital technologies, paper prevails on manufacturing shopfloors. To understand the roles and value of paper on the shopfloor, we have studied the manufacturing practices at two state-of-the-art automotive supplier facilities, applying ethnographic fieldwork, in-depth interviews, as well as photo and document analysis. We find that paper has unique affordances that today’s digital technologies cannot easily supplant on current shopfloors. More specifically, we find four paper practices: (1) creating and adapting individual information spaces, (2) reinterpreting information, (3) combining information handover with social interaction, and (4) visual cuing. We discuss these practices and the unique affordance of paper that currently support shopfloor workers and also consider the limitations of paper, which are becoming increasingly apparent, since more tasks increasingly depend on real-time information

    Atomic resolution observations of silver segregation in a [111] tilt grain boundary in copper

    Alloying a material and hence segregating solutes to grain boundaries is one way to tailor a material to the demands of its application. Direct observation of solute segregation is necessary to understand how the interfacial properties are altered. In this study, we investigate the atomic structure of a high angle grain boundary both in pure copper and upon silver segregation by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopy. We further correlate the experiments to atomistic simulations to quantify the local solute excess and its impact on grain boundary properties. We observe that the grain boundary structure remains intact upon silver segregation and up to five different positions within a structural unit serve as segregation sites. By combining the atomic resolution observation with atomistic modelling, we are able to quantify the local silver concentration and elucidate the underlying segregation mechanism
