CONTROL OF A POWERED ANKLE-FOOT PROSTHESIS: FROM PERCEPTION TO IMPEDANCE MODULATION
Active ankle prostheses controllers are demonstrating gaining smart features to improve the safety and comfort offor users. The perception of user intention to modulate the ankle dynamics is a well-known example of such feature. But not much work focused on the perception of the environment, nor how the environment should be included in the mechanical design and control of the prosthesisprostheses. The proposed work aims to improve the feasibility of integrate the environment perception integration intoto the prostheses controllersler, and to define the desired ankle dynamics, as mechanical impedance, duringof the human walk on different environmental settings. As a preliminary work on environment perception, a vision system was developed that can estimate the ground profileslope and height. The desired prosthesis impedance dynamics is was defined as the dynamics mechanical impedance of a healthy ankle; , therefore, which required the a system identification methodof the human ankle was developed. Simulations showed the inertia parameters of a rigid bodymockup foot can be estimated. Further experiments will show the accuracy of environment perception and of the impedance estimation
An interactive Platform for Representing, Interlinking and Analyzing Content on Art
Unfortunately, many art objects such as paintings and sculptures are not yet cataloged
in digital form. Often not even in printed catalogs or books. This circumstance provides
a considerable obstacle for obtaining information from different collections within mu-
seums or private collections all over the world. Because a significant number of works
of art are also never cataloged, either because the owners lack the knowledge to do so
or because there isn’t a simple tool to help the cataloging process, by providing a large
amount of information in an accurate way, a significant number of these works of art also
remain unknown to the world.
With the help of machine learning algorithms and tools that can interpret images
contents, a platform is to be created that offers a simple data acquisition from art pieces.
In addition to simpler technical attributes such as style and type of art, more detailed
information such as probable artist, materials, and decade of creation could already be
suggested to the user during the data acquisition. This is possible thanks to the algorithms
that can analyze images of the object in question. Alongside these suggestions, there
would be the possibility to interlink data by multiple features in order to get similar art
pieces to the submitted one. From the user utilization of the platform, the growing data
set shall be linked with each other, visualized in an interactive platform, and finally serve
to improve the analysis of new art objects.
The creation of this platform made it feasible to offer a wide amount of information
about any work of art. Four separate image classification models that could categorize
art pieces based on their author, style, decade, and type were developed. To improve
the prediction power of these, a number of strategies were studied and applied. Further
details, including a set of relevant tags, the most dominant colors, and the materials
utilized in the pieces of art, were also provided using Google Cloud Vision API. The
platform’s whole infrastructure was built with these features and best practices in mind.
as funcionalidades necessárias e as melhores práticas

ESTIMATION AND PREDICTION OF THE HUMAN GAIT DYNAMICS FOR THE CONTROL OF AN ANKLE-FOOT PROSTHESIS
With the growing population of amputees, powered prostheses can be a solution to improve the quality of life for many people. Powered ankle-foot prostheses can be made to behave similar to the lost limb via controllers that emulate the mechanical impedance of the human ankle. Therefore, the understanding of human ankle dynamics is of major significance. First, this work reports the modulation of the mechanical impedance via two mechanisms: the co-contraction of the calf muscles and a change of mean ankle torque and angle. Then, the mechanical impedance of the ankle was determined, for the first time, as a multivariable and time-varying system. These findings reveal the importance of recognizing the state of the user during the gait when the user interacts with the environment. In addition to studying the ankle impedance, a wearable device was designed and evaluated to further the studies on robotic perception for ankle-foot prostheses. This device is capable of characterizing the ground environment and estimating the gait state using visual-inertial sensors. Finally, this study contributes to the field of ankle-foot prostheses by identifying the mechanical behavior of the human ankle and developing a platform to test perception algorithms for the control of robotic prostheses
Since the observations of Bosma and Rubin in the 1970s, the rotation curves of the
galaxies are one of the main issues under discussion in contemporary astrophysics. The
indication of the apparent lack of baryonic matter, due to the divergences with newtonian
predictions, led to the formulation of new models, as the dark matter hypothesis or
modications of the newtonian dynamics. In the present work, we study the problem by
means of an approximation of General Relativity with low motion condition applied to
geodesic equation, leaving intact the field equations and the geodesic deviation equation,
without imposing the conditions of weak field. In order to obtain a velocity field, we
used a static Weyl thin-disc metric to test the suitability of the model to 25 low surface
brightness (LSB) galaxie
An EU closed loop waste management system for rare earths: tackling criticality with a disruptive circular economy policy
The EU has recently upped its efforts to ensure a stable access to raw materials and mostly
finite ones, many of which are not explored domestically. The Raw Materials Initiative launched
in 2008 opened the door to a European industrial policy agenda focused on sustainable access
and management of raw materials. Shortly after, the EU began publishing its list of Critical Raw
Materials (CRM) every 3 years.
Among the most critical of materials are rare earths (REE), which are indispensable to the EU
energy transition and a carbon neutral society. The EU challenge of ensuring both a stable
access and a circular management of rare earths is an enduring conundrum. Despite the policy
efforts to push for more circularity and recycling of the rare earths, the situation has not
improved since 2011 - reliance on Chinese supply is about 100% and recycling has no
expression for most rare earths.
The focus of this project is to provide a policy contribution to tackling this conundrum. The rare
earths situation in the EU is studied carefully by considering EU’s strategic interest, the
demand from EU sectors and the state of global supply. Public policies targeted at CRM are
critically assessed and its limitations are discussed. An alternative policy path is presented in
which the EU would commit to co-creating a recycling system aimed at recovering rare earths
from waste of electric and electronic equipment.
A "Iniciativa
Signs of Atonement: Eucharist and Mimetism in the Brazilian Church
The Evangelical Church in Brazil has grown in power in the last two decades. This new situation has revealed a church that seeks to change culture through power, resulting in violence and a dispute for cultural hegemony. This dissertation asserts that a contemplative practice of the Eucharist can produce renewed understandings of the atonement and can reorient the church toward a culture of reconciliation. Following the theoretical framework of René Girard, this thesis claims that we are the ones who need violence and sacrifice, not God. If we are not satisfied with the Eucharist, we will search for false atonements and scapegoating.
The first chapter presents a brief overview of how Protestantism in Brazil is revealing a theology of dominion. The following chapter casts the biblical foundations for a covenantal view of the doctrine of atonement and the progressive shift from Abel’s sacrifice to Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice. In the third chapter, I attempt to offer an overview of the main theories of atonement throughout church history and their semiotic relationship to their cultural context. Followin this chapter, I present the mimetic theory of René Girard and his view of sacrifice as the origin of culture. The fifth chapter presents scapegoating rituals as forms of a false atonement and demonstrates how the Eucharist can transform a crowd into an atoned community. The final chapter demonstrates how a food pattern shapes a community, the therapeutical potential of the Eucharist, and the contemplative example of the monastic community of Taizé.
The way a church approaches the table shapes the way that church will relate to culture. If a church is not atoned in the Eucharist, that church will seek out false atonements. The Brazilian Evangelical Church has a great opportunity to learn the authority of suffering compassion with Jesus at his table
