    “O CES vai à Escola” e Refugiados/as: quando o saber ocupa lugar

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

Parallel, angular and perpendicular parking for self-driving cars using deep reinforcement learning

    Get PDF
The progress in creating a fully autonomous selfdriving car has steadily increased in recent decades. Consequently, autonomous parking has been a well-researched field since every driving trip must end with a parking manoeuvre. In recent years, with the current successes in reinforcement learning, the concept of applying it to solve the autonomous parking problem has been more and more explored. A vehicle equipped with a complete autonomous parking system must perform three types of parking: perpendicular, angular and parallel parking. Autonomous parking systems control the steering angle and the vehicle speed by considering the surrounding space conditions to ensure collision-free motion within the available space. This paper presents an approach to the problem of autonomous parking using Reinforcement Learning, more precisely, Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient. This approach proved to be capable of parking in a variety of different environments for the three parking manoeuvres. This work has been supported by FCT-Fundacao para a Ciencia e Tecnologia within the R&D Units Project Scope: UIDB/00319/2020. However, most available evidence is derived from qualitative studies, whereas quantitative research on this subject is limited. Objectives: To synthetize the literature about physical and mental health outcomes associated with community gardening. Two main questions were addressed: a) is there evidence, from quantitative studies, that community gardening is associated to physical and mental health and well-being of non-institutionalized individuals? b) Does community gardening provokes any discomfort in terms of physical health, i.e., bodily pain, to their beneficiaries? Methods: A systematic review of the literature was carried out following PRISMA guidelines by searching relevant electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science). Empirical, quantitative studies published in English with no restrictions concerning the date of publication were considered eligible. The quality of the evidence was appraised using the tool developed by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies. Results: Overall, 8 studies were considered eligible, of which seven studies were rated as having good methodological quality (one scored as fair). Community gardeners had significantly better health outcomes than their neighbours not engaged in gardening activities in terms of life satisfaction, happiness, general health, mental health, and social cohesion. Conclusion: Community gardens are associated to health gains for their users, irrespective of age, being an affordable and efficient way of promoting physical and mental health and well-being. To encourage the design, maintenance, and prospective evaluation of supportive urban environments promoting healthy and, at the same time, sustainable lifestyles, is essential to achieve public health gains and environmental sustainability. This literature review was funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia and by the Empresa Municipal de Ambiente de Cascais through a doctoral grant to the first author of this paper (PDE/BDE/122672/2016). The opportunity to be intern at Westheimer Portugal, Lda. and to integrate the development of the Hillside House project allowed to do an ambitious work, experience various areas of graphic design, applying learned contents and concepts and new work techniques. This report is divided into two parts. The first part involves all information related to the curricular internship, the presentation of the company and the project, as well as all the work developed during the internship. In the second part, a theoretical-practical study is presented and the design of the signage is highlighted. The theoretical framework addresses themes in the area of Graphic Design, namely, communication and information design. The work process is described showing the practical application. The practical experience of the internship allowed me to apply the knowledge acquired throughout the course and strengthen the knowledge and skills as a graphic designer. The report contributes to systematize all the research, analyze methodologies and describe the actions developed, as well as compile in an organized way the information that is now a working tool

Technologies, infrastructures and migrations: material citizenship politics

    Get PDF
This article aims to explore the multiple uses and consequences of different technologies and infrastructures in the context of migrations and how such uses and consequences inhabit and transform migrants’ rights and subjectivities. It reviews relevant literature at the intersection of citizenship, critical migration studies and science and technology studies (STS), focusing in particular on the current debates underway within critical citizenship studies that examine how technologies and infrastructures shape the ability to acts of citizenship. By mobilizing insights from STS, we focus on how these political subjectivities are shaped by certain sociomaterial and epistemic practices. By introducing the notion of material citizenship politics, the article outlines a way to differentiate three different constitutive forms between technologies, infrastructures and citizenship in migrations. Technologies and infrastructures can (1) constrain acts of citizenship in migration and border regimes; (2) constitute contestation and participation over citizenship; or (3) enable and shape alternative acts of citizenship in migration and border regimes. As it provides a theoretical background to the special issue, the article also serves as the introduction to the issue. This work has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (Consolidation grant, agreement No. [648608]), within the project `EXCHANGE -Forensic geneticists and the transnational exchange of DNA data in the EU: Engaging science with social control, citizenship and democracy', led by Helena Machado and hosted at the Institute for Social Sciences of at the University of Minho, Portugal.
