Indexación: Web of Science; Scopus. Here we report the inclusion of two Keggin Polyoxometalates (POMs), [H3PW12O40] and [H4SiW12O40], into silica gels by integrating them during the preparation of the SiO2 matrix via "sol-gel" methods. Aerogels were produced by supercritical drying of the wet gels impregnated with the POMs, and lyogels were obtained by means of a lyophilization process. These materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and thermoanalytical techniques (TGA-DSC). We found that a large fraction of POMs are lost during the aging time, and solvent exchange for lyophilization. However the thermal stability of the bare matrix is modified by the inclusion of POMs. Some aggregates with a high content of POMs were found via SEM-EDX.http://ref.scielo.org/3fg9t

Perturbative S-matrix unitarity and higher-order Lorentz violation

We investigate the preservation of unitarity in a Lorentz and CPT-violating QED model containing higher-order operators. In particular, we consider modifications in the fermion sector with dimension-five operators. The higher-order operators lead to an indefinite metric and a pseudo-unitarity relation for the SS-matrix. However, we show that the pseudo-unitarity condition can be promoted to a genuine unitarity relation by i) restricting the energies to the effective region far below the Planck mass and ii) considering stable particles to have positive metric. In the context of the optical theorem, we focus on the one-loop Bhabha and Compton scattering processes. We show that no ghost states get propagated through the cuts, thus satisfying the unitarity condition. Further, we show that discontinuities of propagators are equivalent to replacing physical Dirac functionals in the cutting equation. The physical Dirac functionals are defined to select only mode solutions of stable particles. The provided extension of Cutkosky rule may be helpful for analyzing perturbative unitarity in higher-order diagrams.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

GAS1:A New β-Glucan Immunostimulant Candidate to Increase Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Resistance to Bacterial Infections With Aeromonas salmonicida achromogenes

β-glucans are prebiotic and/or food additives used by the aquaculture industry to enhance the immune response of fish. Their efficiency may vary according to their origin and structure. In this study, the immunostimulant effects of two β-glucan types extracted from wild-type baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and its null-mutant Gas1 were investigated. Gas1 has a beta-1,3-glucanosyltransferase activity necessary for cell wall assembly. Using a positive (commercial product MacroGard(®)) and a negative control (a diet without glucans), we evaluated the immune responses and disease resistance of rainbow trout juveniles (mean weight, ~44 g) fed control, low (0.2%) and high (0.5%) doses of Macrogard(®), Gas1, and Wild type-β-glucan after a short-term (15 days, D15) or mid-term (36 days, D36) feeding periods. We found that β-glucan supplemented diets did not affect growth performance, mortality, splenic index, or leukocyte respiratory burst activity on D15 nor D36. However, each β-glucan triggered different immune effectors, depending of the doses or length of exposure compared to others and/or the negative control. Indeed, high dose of MacroGard(®) significantly increased lysozyme activities at D15 compared with the control and other diets (p<0.05). At D36, MacroGard β-glucan enhanced the production of lymphocytes in comparison with the control diet (p<0.05). Regarding WT β-glucan, at D36, WT-β-glucan, especially the high dose, provided the highest enzymatic activities (lysozyme and ACH50) and Ig level (p<0.01). Furthermore, on D36, Gas1 also increased lysozyme activity, Ig proportion, and some immune genes (mcsfra, hepcidin) compared with MacroGard(®) (p<0.05). Besides, both doses of Gas1-β-glucans increased the resistance of juveniles to bacterial infection highlighted by a higher survival rate at 14 days post-challenge compared with the control and other types and doses of β-glucans (p<0.05). In conclusion, our results suggest that Gas1-β-glucan could represent a promising immunostimulant that would help to prevent diseases in aquaculture even more efficiently than other β-glucans already in use. Mode of action and particular efficiency of this new Gas1 mutant are debated

AbstractThe evaluation of the maximum level of load that any 2D framed structure can undergo, before plastic collapse or buckling, is addressed in this paper. The analytical approach, based on a beam element with elastic behaviour except on its ends, uses an incremental approach to determine when changes appear due to plastic behaviour. When the combination of axial force and bending moment in any cross-section reaches the plastic function, that section is considered to yield suddenly and relative displacements can appear because of the yielding. The model includes the traditional plastic hinge, which only considers relative rotation due to the effect of the bending moment. The sequential loading and yielding reduces the stiffness and stability of the frame, which is computed and compared with the classic plastic methods of analysis

Flow blurring atomization of Poly(ethylene oxide) solutions below the coil overlap concentration

Atomization of polymer solutions has important technological implications across many fields. Here, we investigated the atomization dynamics of diluted, polymer solutions using Flow Blurring (FB) technology. Aqueous solutions of poly(ethylene oxide) [PEO] of viscosity-averaged molecular weight in the range 100000 g/mol – 4000000 g/mol and varying concentrations were sprayed with a FB atomizer having an orifice diameter (D) of 700μm and a liquid feed-tube-to-orifice separation (H) of 100μm. The solutions belong to the dilute regime, where polymer coil overlap does not occur, that is φ= [Formula presented] <φcrit (Modesto-López, Pérez-Arjona, & Gañán-Calvo, 2019). Shear viscosity measurements indicated that the solutions had viscosities of the order of that of the solvent and exhibited a Newtonian-like behavior. However, during the atomization, and due to the relatively high shear stress induced in the atomizer, the solutions exhibit extensional rheology, which most likely arises from the stretching of the polymer chains in-flight. Although initially the atomization resulted in formation of filaments, these broke up into droplets at relatively short distances from the atomizer discharge orifice as elucidated by images from ultra-high speed videos. The phenomenon is in contrast with that observed in FB-based atomization of semi-diluted polymer solutions with concentrations larger than the polymer coil overlap concentration, c∗. FB atomization of the diluted solutions resulted in a decrease in droplet size with increasing the gas-to-liquid mass ratio (GLR). The approach herein aims at understanding the droplet formation dynamics of viscoelastic, polymer solutions with FB, for applications in large-scale synthesis of materialsMinisterio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad DPI2016-78887-C3-1-

In the present study, the modulation of the transcriptional immune response (microarray analysis) in the head kidney (HK) of the anadromous fish Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) fed a diet supplemented with an olive fruit extract (AQUOLIVE®) was evaluated. At the end of the trial (133 days), in order to investigate the immunomodulatory properties of the phytogenic tested against a bacterial infection, an in vivo challenge with Aeromonas salmonicida was performed. A total number of 1,027 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) (805 up- and 222 downregulated) were found when comparing the transcriptomic profiling of the HK from fish fed the control and AQUOLIVE® diets. The HK transcripteractome revealed an expression profile that mainly favored biological processes related to immunity. Particularly, the signaling of i-kappa B kinase/NF-kappa and the activation of leukocytes, such as granulocytes and neutrophils degranulation, were suggested to be the primary actors of the innate immune response promoted by the tested functional feed additive in the HK. Moreover, the bacterial challenge with A. salmonicida that lasted 12 days showed that the cumulative survival was higher in fish fed the AQUOLIVE® diet (96.9 ± 6.4%) than the control group (60.7 ± 13.5%). These results indicate that the dietary supplementation of AQUOLIVE® at the level of 0.15% enhanced the systemic immune response and reduced the A. salmonicida cumulative mortality in Atlantic salmon smolts.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
