    Pricing reverse mortgages in Spain

    [EN] In Spain, as in other European countries, the continuous ageing of the population creates a need for long-term care services and their financing. However, in Spain the development of this kind of services is still embryonic. The aim of this article is to obtain a calculation method for reverse mortgages in Spain based on the fit and projection of dynamic tables for Spanish mortality, using the Lee and Carter model. Mortality and life expectancy for the next 20 years are predicted using the fitted model, and confidence intervals are obtained from the prediction errors of parameters for the mortality index of the model. The last part of the article illustrates an application of the results to calculate the reverse mortgage model promoted by the Spanish Instituto de Crédito Oficial (Spanish State Financial Agency), for which the authors have developed a computer application.The authors are indebted to Jose Garrido, whose suggestions improved the original manuscript, and to the anonymous referee for his/her valuable comments.     Electron Accumulation and Emergent Magnetism in LaMnO3/SrTiO3 Heterostructures

    Emergent phenomena at polar-nonpolar oxide interfaces have been studied intensely in pursuit of next-generation oxide electronics and spintronics. Here we report the disentanglement of critical thicknesses for electron reconstruction and the emergence of ferromagnetism in polar-mismatched LaMnO3/SrTiO3 (001) heterostructures. Using a combination of element-specific X-ray absorption spectroscopy and dichroism, and first-principles calculations, interfacial electron accumulation and ferromagnetism have been observed within the polar, antiferromagnetic insulator LaMnO3. Our results show that the critical thickness for the onset of electron accumulation is as thin as 2 unit cells (UC), significantly thinner than the observed critical thickness for ferromagnetism of 5 UC. The absence of ferromagnetism below 5 UC is likely induced by electron over-accumulation. In turn, by controlling the doping of the LaMnO3, we are able to neutralize the excessive electrons from the polar mismatch in ultrathin LaMnO3 films and thus enable ferromagnetism in films as thin as 3 UC, extending the limits of our ability to synthesize and tailor emergent phenomena at interfaces and demonstrating manipulation of the electronic and magnetic structures of materials at the shortest length scales.Comment: Accepted by Phys.     Solar neutrino detection in a large volume double-phase liquid argon experiment

    Precision measurements of solar neutrinos emitted by specific nuclear reaction chains in the Sun are of great interest for developing an improved understanding of star formation and evolution. Given the expected neutrino fluxes and known detection reactions, such measurements require detectors capable of collecting neutrino-electron scattering data in exposures on the order of 1 ktonne yr, with good energy resolution and extremely low background. Two-phase liquid argon time projection chambers (LAr TPCs) are under development for direct Dark Matter WIMP searches, which possess very large sensitive mass, high scintillation light yield, good energy resolution, and good spatial resolution in all three cartesian directions. While enabling Dark Matter searches with sensitivity extending to the "neutrino floor" (given by the rate of nuclear recoil events from solar neutrino coherent scattering), such detectors could also enable precision measurements of solar neutrino fluxes using the neutrino-electron elastic scattering events. Modeling results are presented for the cosmogenic and radiogenic backgrounds affecting solar neutrino detection in a 300 tonne (100 tonne fiducial) LAr TPC operating at LNGS depth (3,800 meters of water equivalent). The results show that such a detector could measure the CNO neutrino rate with ~15% precision, and significantly improve the precision of the 7Be and pep neutrino rates compared to the currently available results from the Borexino organic liquid scintillator detector.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures, 6 table

    Stochastic models in population biology and their deterministic analogs

    In this paper we introduce a class of stochastic population models based on "patch dynamics". The size of the patch may be varied, and this allows one to quantify the departures of these stochastic models from various mean field theories, which are generally valid as the patch size becomes very large. These models may be used to formulate a broad range of biological processes in both spatial and non-spatial contexts. Here, we concentrate on two-species competition. We present both a mathematical analysis of the patch model, in which we derive the precise form of the competition mean field equations (and their first order corrections in the non-spatial case), and simulation results. These mean field equations differ, in some important ways, from those which are normally written down on phenomenological grounds. Our general conclusion is that mean field theory is more robust for spatial models than for a single isolated patch. This is due to the dilution of stochastic effects in a spatial setting resulting from repeated rescue events mediated by inter-patch diffusion. However, discrete effects due to modest patch sizes lead to striking deviations from mean field theory even in a spatial setting.Comment: 47 pages, 9 figure

    Anisotropic generalization of Stinchcombe's solution for conductivity of random resistor network on a Bethe lattice

    Our study is based on the work of Stinchcombe [1974 \emph{J. Phys. C} \textbf{7} 179] and is devoted to the calculations of average conductivity of random resistor networks placed on an anisotropic Bethe lattice. The structure of the Bethe lattice is assumed to represent the normal directions of the regular lattice. We calculate the anisotropic conductivity as an expansion in powers of inverse coordination number of the Bethe lattice. The expansion terms retained deliver an accurate approximation of the conductivity at resistor concentrations above the percolation threshold. We make a comparison of our analytical results with those of Bernasconi [1974 \emph{Phys. Rev. B} \textbf{9} 4575] for the regular lattice.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure

    Evaluation of Recruitment Strategies on Inclusiveness of Populations at Risk for Health Disparities in the Statewide Remote Online COVIDsmart Registry

    Background The COVID-19 pandemic affected health research practices. The large-scale impacts of COVID-19 and restrictions on face-to-face interaction led to increased use of remote online data collection methods. However, it is unclear if such efforts led to the representation of populations at risk for health disparities. We evaluated whether multiple recruitment strategies would capture a representative sample of individuals at risk for health disparities. Methods The COVIDsmart registry collected clinical, social, economic, and behavioral data in the state of Virginia from March to November, 2021. Seven hundred eighty-two adult participants were enrolled. We compared the representation of COVIDsmart participants at risk for health disparities against state data with two-tailed Z tests. Monte-Carlo estimates evaluated the association between recruitment strategies utilized and health disparity risk status. Results The majority of participants were non-Hispanic White (81.5%), female (78.6%), non-rural (98%), had a Masters’ degree or higher (62.6%), and an income of $100,000 or higher (51%). The recruitment strategy that brought participants into the study did not differ significantly based on racial/ethnic minority status (p\u3e.05), but did differ for low SES versus high SES groups, p=.03. Low SES and ethnic/racial minority representation proportions were significantly lower for COVIDsmart participants than state data, (p\u3e.05). Conclusions Participants at risk for health disparities were not well represented in this registry despite multiple recruitment strategies. The use of targeted emails, social media, and community collaboration may improve the participation of populations at risk for health disparities in remote online research studies

    Maximum tumor diameter is not an independent prognostic factor in high-risk localized prostate cancer

    Contains fulltext : 69173.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access)OBJECTIVES: Previous studies suggest that maximum tumor diameter (MTD) is a predictor of recurrence in prostate cancer (PC). This study investigates the prognostic value of MTD for biochemical recurrence (BCR) in patients with PC, after radical prostatectomy (RP), with emphasis on high-risk localized prostate cancer. METHODS: RP specimens of 542 patients were evaluated with a median follow-up of 39.5 months (range 0.6-150 months). MTD was defined as the largest diameter of the largest tumor; high-risk as >or=T2c or PSA level>20 ng/ml or Gleason score>or=8 and BCR as two consecutive PSA levels>0.10 ng/ml. Proportional hazards multivariable regression models were composed to determine prognostic factors for BCR. RESULTS: Overall, 114 patients developed BCR after RP. The overall 5-year risk of BCR was 25% (95% CI=20.4-29.6), and median MTD was 24 mm (range 1-65). MTD in the total and high-risk group was associated with total tumor volume, volume of the largest tumor, pre-operative PSA levels, and Gleason score. In a univariable analyses, MTD was weakly associated with risk of BCR (HR=1.02 per mm increase, 95% CI=1.002-1.035, P=0.024) in the total group; in the high-risk group this association was lost (HR=1.01, 95%CI=0.99-1.03, P=0.18). Multivariable analyses indicated that positive surgical margins, higher Gleason score, advanced pathological stage, and multiple tumors were the main prognostic factors for BCR irrespective of the risk profile. MTD did not provide additional information. CONCLUSIONS: MTD is not an independent prognostic factor for BCR in patients treated with RP, irrespective of the risk profile

    DNA Vaccine Expressing Conserved Influenza Virus Proteins Protective Against H5N1 Challenge Infection in Mice

    Influenza vaccination practice, which is based on neutralizing antibodies, requires being able to predict which viral strains will be circulating. If an unexpected strain, as in the 1997 H5N1 Hong Kong outbreak, or even a pandemic emerges, appropriate vaccines may take too long to prepare. Therefore, strategies based on conserved influenza antigens should be explored. We studied DNA vaccination in mice with plasmids expressing conserved nucleoprotein (NP) and matrix (M) from an H1N1 virus. After vaccination, mice were challenged with A/H5N1 viruses of low, intermediate, and high lethality. A/NP+A/M DNA vaccination reduced replication of A/Hong Kong/486/97 (HK/486), a nonlethal H5N1 strain, and protected against lethal challenge with more virulent A/Hong Kong/156/97 (HK/156). After HK/156 exposure, mice survived rechallenge with A/Hong Kong/483/97 (HK/483), although the DNA vaccination alone protected poorly against this highly virulent strain. In the absence of antigenically matched hemagglutinin-based vaccines, DNA vaccination with conserved influenza genes may provide a useful first line of defense against a rapidly spreading pandemic virus
