The 1945 Iowa corn yield test

    Get PDF
The Iowa Corn Yield Test attempts to provide comparable performance records on a relatively large number of hybrid combinations. Some of these on which information is presented are well established strains of known performance while others are new and relatively unknown to most Iowa farmers. Data are presented on each hybrid for yield, stand, moisture, root and stalk lodging, ear height and dropped ears. A performance score has been calculated for use in evaluating the relative agronomic -value o f the hybrids tested. It is believed that the information presented should afford a reliable estimate on the relative performance of a number of hybrids when grown in different areas of the state

Each year the Iowa farmer has a multitude of corn hybrids from which he can choose seed for planting. Some are well established strains of proven worth, while others are new and relatively untried. It is impossible to determine, from the appearance of the seed in the bag, the desirability of any particular hybrid. The real test of its value is determined by planting it along with other hybrids to check its field performance. The Iowa Corn Yield Test attempts to provide comparable performance records on a number of hybrids. It is believed that the information presented in this bulletin should afford a reliable comparison of the relative performance of various hybrids when grown in different parts of the state. Data are presented on each entry for yield, stand, moisture, root and stalk lodging, ear height, dropped ears and damaged corn. A performance score has been used in evaluating the relative agronomic value of the various hybrids tested

The Iowa Corn Yield Test attempts to make available an impartial evaluation of various hybrid combinations in respect to yielding ability, lodging resistance, maturity and other agronomic characteristics. It is believed that the information presented in this bulletin may be of value to both the purchaser and the producer of hybrid corn seed, showing as it does the relative performance of various hybrids in different parts of the state. Data are presented on each entry for yield, stand, moisture, root and stalk lodging, dropped ears, ear height and damaged corn. A performance score has been used as a means of evaluating relative agronomic value of the different hybrids

Availability, use and quality of care for medical abortion services in private facilities in Kenya

The overall goal of this study was to generate evidence on the availability, use, and quality of care for medical abortion services in private facilities (pharmacies and clinics) in Kenya. With the passing of a new constitution in 2010, there was renewed interest in the right to health and the need to reduce the high levels of maternal morbidity and mortality arising from unsafe abortion in the country. In spite of recent developments, there is limited understanding of the extent to which the changes have influenced the provision of medical abortion information and services in the country, the acceptability of the practice among providers and clients, and the content of care offered. Implications of the findings indicate a need for: widespread dissemination of the existing policies and guidelines regarding abortion among private providers to ensure that they offer services within existing regulations; improvement of the supply chain for medical abortion drugs in private clinics; and strategies to improve the capacity of private providers to offer appropriate family planning services to clients seeking abortion, especially long-term methods given the high rate of repeat abortions

Exogenous spatial precuing reliably modulates object processing but not object substitution masking

Object substitution masking (OSM) is used in behavioral and imaging studies to investigate processes associated with the formation of a conscious percept. Reportedly, OSM occurs only when visual attention is diffusely spread over a search display or focused away from the target location. Indeed, the presumed role of spatial attention is central to theoretical accounts of OSM and of visual processing more generally (Di Lollo, Enns, & Rensink, Journal of Experimental Psychology: General 129:481–507, 2000). We report a series of five experiments in which valid spatial precuing is shown to enhance the ability of participants to accurately report a target but, in most cases, without affecting OSM. In only one experiment (Experiment 5) was a significant effect of precuing observed on masking. This is in contrast to the reliable effect shown across all five experiments in which precuing improved overall performance. The results are convergent with recent findings from Argyropoulos, Gellatly, and Pilling (Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance 39:646–661, 2013), which show that OSM is independent of the number of distractor items in a display. Our results demonstrate that OSM can operate independently of focal attention. Previous claims of the strong interrelationship between OSM and spatial attention are likely to have arisen from ceiling or floor artifacts that restricted measurable performance

What Has Psychoanalysis got to do with happiness? Reclaiming the positive in psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

This paper questions whether what is a strength of psychoanalysis – its focus on painful and difficult experiences and its ability to remain in touch with the negative aspects of the personality – might also be an Achilles heel. The paper discusses research from neuroscience, developmental and social psychology to argue that more attention needs to be given to how we work with more positive and hopeful aspects of the personality, and that otherwise psychoanalytic psychotherapists are not working with the whole person. Some clinical examples are used to illustrate how these ideas might be used
