This thesis is a pedagogical case study on Strategy applied to Innovation, using Printoo – a product by Ynvisible – as a setting. Hence, the focus of this case is to describe and analyze the challenge of this company and its managers to define a fit strategy for its new, innovative product. Printoo’s concept is highly innovative and it is inserted in an area of technological development with great potential – Printed Electronics. Several tools and trends influence this area, such as the Makers culture, Crowdfunding, Open-Source and the increasing use of Technology in Education. Furthermore, there is a debate on implementing the concept of the Internet of Things – in which Printed Electronics may have a role. From the interviews and analysis performed, this paper has two key conclusions. The first one is that Ynvisible should focus on both Printoo – a series of kits of Printed Electronics technologies components – and on the company’s own proprietary Electrochromic displays – that are included in Printoo – in order to maximize the power it has over the potential profits that will derive from this innovation, because Printoo is highly imitable and the displays are not. Nevertheless, Printoo is an important marketing tool to promote Ynvisible’s displays and other components from suppliers. The second conclusion is that Education is an important market that Printoo should address, and that the approach should combine continuous improvement – of the technologies that the kits contain and of the experiences they allow to perform – and service improvement – as courses and workshops – which actually Ynvisible is starting to do. Other markets are also important, such as the Makers, Open Source market and the Prototyping market

    Authenticated file broadcast protocol

    Get PDF
The File Broadcast Protocol (FBP) was developed as a part of the DETIboot system. DETIboot allows a host to broadcast an operating system image through an 802.11 wireless network to an arbitrary number of receivers. Receivers can load the image and immediately boot a Linux live session. The initial version of FBP had no security mechanisms. In this paper we present an authentication protocol developed for FBP that ensures a correct file distribution from the intended source to the receivers. The performance valuations have shown that, with the best operational configuration tested, the file download time is increased by less than 5%

    Get PDF
This study, aimed the development of a methodology for rapid manufacture of orthopedic implants simultaneously with the surgical intervention, considering two potential applications in the fields of orthopedics: the manufacture of anatomically adapted implants and implants for bone loss replacement. This work innovation consists on the capitation of the in situ geometry of the implant by direct capture of the shape using an elastomeric material (polyvinylsiloxane) which allows fine detail and great accuracy of the geometry. After scanning the elastomeric specimen, the implant is obtained by machining using a CNC milling machine programmed with a dedicated CAD/CAM system. After sterilization, the implant is able to be placed on the patient. The concept was developed using low cost technology and commercially available. The system has been tested in an in vivo hip arthroplasty performed on a sheep. The time increase of surgery was 80 minutes being 40 minutes the time of implant manufacturing. The system developed has been tested and the goals defined of the study achieved enabling the rapid manufacture of an implant in a time period compatible with the surgery time

Remote sensing technologies for the assessment of marine and coastal ecosystems

    Get PDF
Abstract This chapter reviews the Remote Sensing (RS) technologies that are particularly appropriate for marine and coastal ecosystem research and management. RS techniques are used to perform analysis of water quality in coastal water bodies; to identify, characterize and analyze river plumes; to extract estuarine/coastal sandy bodies; to identify beach features/patterns; and to evaluate the changes and integrity (health) of the coastal lagoon habitats. For effective management of these ecosystems, it is essential to have satellite data available and complementary accurate information about the current state of the coastal regions, in addition to well-informed forecasts about its future state. In recent years, the use of space, air and ground-based RS strategies has allowed for the rapid data collection, Image processing (Pixel-Based and Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) classification) and dissemination of such information to reduce vulnerability to natural hazards, anthropic pressures, and to monitoring essential ecological processes, life support systems and biological diversityinfo:eu-repo/semantics/submittedVersio

    Get PDF
Aim: This research work aims to assess if the regular practice of sports influences or not motor skills, physical fitness and body composition of students. Additionally it is sought to identify the correlation between the performance of students in specific motor skills tests of football, physical fitness and body composition. Material and Methods: For the study, the total sample consisted of 160 12-year-old male students, living in Madeira and that practice football regularly. The sample was divided into two groups of 80 students each. One group of students had a regular, supervised, periodized (Federated Sports) extracurricular physical activity beyond curricular physical activity. The other group entails students who only practice physical activities as a curricular activity (School Sport). The values of body composition (BMI and% BF) were also evaluated and the Fitnessgram test battery was applied to assess the physical fitness of students. To check motor abilities of students, a battery of tests of the Portuguese Football Federation (1986), adapted by the Football Association of Madeira (2009) was applied. The software Predivtive Analytics Software – PASW - version 18.0 for Windows was used for analysing and processing data. Results: After analysing the results we became aware that students with extracurricular physical activities get better results on average in motor skills than students with curricular physical activities. This result is perhaps the less surprising in the set of all assessments due to the longer physical commitment of these students in relation to the students that only exercise in the context of curricular activities. Regarding physical fitness, students with extracurricular physical activity can put more students at or above ZSAF than students with curricular physical activity. It is also mentioned in the chapter skills that, with regard to the extension and flexion of arms, 26% of the students with curricular physical activity are above ZSAF, achieving better performance than the students that have extracurricular physical activity. Within the set of the skills measured, the students with extracurricular physical activities achieve a relatively higher average than students with curricular physical activities. With regard to body composition and after determining the BMI and% the BF of each group, it appears that students with extracurricular physical activities achieve better results than those achieved by the students of curricular physical activities. Conclusion: The regular practice of sports with curricular and extracurricular physical activities, seems to contribute to an improvement of physical fitness, motor skills and body composition of students, keeping them in a healthy fitness zone, thus preventing the premature onset of cardiovascular diseases, among others
