Investigating teacher presence in courses using synchronous videoconferencing
This research examines teacher presence in high school distance courses that are delivered by synchronous videoconference. In rural and remote areas, many school districts are using videoconferencing as way to reach dispersed students. This collective case study uses mixed methods to unpack the notion of presence from the perspective of teachers and their students. This study reports four key findings which have implications for building presence in a videoconference course: teachers’ confidence and experience aligned with higher presence; teaching videoconference and face-to-face classes simultaneously led to challenges with developing presence; immediacy behaviors correlated with higher presence; and, students’ learning preference related to perceived teacher presence. These findings confirm many of the issues raised in the literature about technology integration but also contribute new perspectives on teaching presence in a videoconference
Random perfect lattices and the sphere packing problem
Motivated by the search for best lattice sphere packings in Euclidean spaces
of large dimensions we study randomly generated perfect lattices in moderately
large dimensions (up to d=19 included). Perfect lattices are relevant in the
solution of the problem of lattice sphere packing, because the best lattice
packing is a perfect lattice and because they can be generated easily by an
algorithm. Their number however grows super-exponentially with the dimension so
to get an idea of their properties we propose to study a randomized version of
the algorithm and to define a random ensemble with an effective temperature in
a way reminiscent of a Monte-Carlo simulation. We therefore study the
distribution of packing fractions and kissing numbers of these ensembles and
show how as the temperature is decreased the best know packers are easily
recovered. We find that, even at infinite temperature, the typical perfect
lattices are considerably denser than known families (like A_d and D_d) and we
propose two hypotheses between which we cannot distinguish in this paper: one
in which they improve Minkowsky's bound phi\sim 2^{-(0.84+-0.06) d}, and a
competitor, in which their packing fraction decreases super-exponentially,
namely phi\sim d^{-a d} but with a very small coefficient a=0.06+-0.04. We also
find properties of the random walk which are suggestive of a glassy system
already for moderately small dimensions. We also analyze local structure of
network of perfect lattices conjecturing that this is a scale-free network in
all dimensions with constant scaling exponent 2.6+-0.1.Comment: 19 pages, 22 figure
Are there gender differences in the geography of alcohol-related mortality in Scotland? An ecological study
<b>Background</b>
There is growing concern about alcohol-related harm, particularly within Scotland which has some of the highest rates of alcohol-related death in western Europe. There are large gender differences in alcohol-related mortality rates in Scotland and in other countries, but the reasons for these differences are not clearly understood. In this paper, we aimed to address calls in the literature for further research on gender differences in the causes, contexts and consequences of alcohol-related harm. Our primary research question was whether the kind of social environment which tends to produce higher or lower rates of alcohol-related mortality is the same for both men and women across Scotland.
<b>Methods</b>
Cross-sectional, ecological design. A comparison was made between spatial variation in men's and women's age-standardised alcohol-related mortality rates in Scotland using maps, Moran's Index, linear regression and spatial analyses of residuals. Directly standardised mortality rates were derived from individual level records of death registration, 2000–2005 (n = 8685).
<b>Results</b>
As expected, men's alcohol-related mortality rate substantially exceeded women's and there was substantial spatial variation in these rates for both men and women within Scotland. However, there was little spatial variation in the relationship between men's and women's alcohol-mortality rates (r2 = 0.73); areas with relatively high rates of alcohol-related mortality for men tended also to have relatively high rates for women. In a small number of areas (8 out of 144) the relationship between men's and women's alcohol-related mortality rates was significantly different.
<b>Conclusion</b>
In as far as geographic location captures exposure to social and economic environment, our results suggest that the relationship between social and economic environment and alcohol-related harm is very similar for men and women. The existence of a small number of areas in which men's and women's alcohol-related mortality had an different relationship suggests that some places may have unusual drinking cultures. These might prove useful for further investigations into the factors which influence drinking behaviour in men and women
Identification and quantification of particulate tracers of exhaust and non-exhaust vehicle emissions
In order to identify and quantify key species associated with non-exhaust
emissions and exhaust vehicular emissions, a large comprehensive dataset of
particulate species has been obtained thanks to simultaneous near-road and
urban background measurements coupled with detailed traffic counts and
chassis dynamometer measurements of exhaust emissions of a few in-use
vehicles well-represented in the French fleet. Elemental carbon, brake-wear
metals (Cu, Fe, Sb, Sn, Mn), n-alkanes (C19-C26), light-molecular-weight
polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
(PAHs; pyrene, fluoranthene, anthracene) and two hopanes (17α21βnorhopane and
17α21βhopane) are strongly associated with the
road traffic. Traffic-fleet emission factors have been determined for all of
them and are consistent with most recent published equivalent data. When
possible, light-duty- and heavy-duty-traffic emission factors are also
determined. In the absence of significant non-combustion emissions, light-duty-traffic
emissions are in good agreement with emissions from chassis
dynamometer measurements. Since recent measurements in Europe including those
from this study are consistent, ratios involving copper (Cu∕Fe and Cu∕Sn)
could be used as brake-wear emissions tracers as long as brakes with Cu
remain in use. Near the Grenoble ring road, where the traffic was largely
dominated by diesel vehicles in 2011 (70 %), the OC∕EC ratio estimated for
traffic emissions was around 0.4. Although the use of quantitative data for
source apportionment studies is not straightforward for the identified
organic molecular markers, their presence seems to well-characterize fresh
traffic emissions.</p

Ion beam modifications of near-surface compositions in ternary alloys
Changes in the surface and subsurface compositions of ternary alloys during elevated-temperature sputtering with inert-gas ions were investigated. Theoretically, a comprehensive kinetic model which includes all the basic processes, such as preferential sputtering, displacement mixing, Gibbsian segregation, radiation-enhanced diffusion and radiation-induced segregation, was developed. This phenomenological approach enabled to predict the effects of each individual process or of a combination of processes on the compositional modification in model alloys. Experimentally, measurements of compositional changes at the surface of a Ag-40at%Au -- 20at%Cu alloy during 3-keV Ne{sup +} bombardment at various temperatures were made, using ion scattering spectroscopy. A concept for major incident triage: full-scaled simulation feasibility study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Efficient management of major incidents involves triage, treatment and transport. In the absence of a standardised interdisciplinary major incident management approach, the Norwegian Air Ambulance Foundation developed Interdisciplinary Emergency Service Cooperation Course (TAS). The TAS-program was established in 1998 and by 2009, approximately 15 500 emergency service professionals have participated in one of more than 500 no-cost courses. The TAS-triage concept is based on the established triage Sieve and Paediatric Triage Tape models but modified with slap-wrap reflective triage tags and paediatric triage stretchers. We evaluated the feasibility and accuracy of the TAS-triage concept in full-scale simulated major incidents.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The learners participated in two standardised bus crash simulations: without and with competence of TAS-triage and access to TAS-triage equipment. The instructors calculated triage accuracy and measured time consumption while the learners participated in a self-reported before-after study. Each question was scored on a 7-point Likert scale with points labelled "Did not work" (1) through "Worked excellent" (7).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Among the 93 (85%) participating emergency service professionals, 48% confirmed the existence of a major incident triage system in their service, whereas 27% had access to triage tags. The simulations without TAS-triage resulted in a mean over- and undertriage of 12%. When TAS-Triage was used, no mistriage was found. The average time from "scene secured to all patients triaged" was 22 minutes (range 15-32) without TAS-triage vs. 10 minutes (range 5-21) with TAS-triage. The participants replied to "How did interdisciplinary cooperation of triage work?" with mean 4,9 (95% CI 4,7-5,2) before the course vs. mean 5,8 (95% CI 5,6-6,0) after the course, p < 0,001.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our modified triage Sieve tool is feasible, time-efficient and accurate in allocating priority during simulated bus accidents and may serve as a candidate for a future national standard for major incident triage.</p
Neuromusculoskeletal disorders in the neck and upper extremities among drivers of all-terrain vehicles – a case series
BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether professional drivers of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) with neck pain have a different array of neuromusculoskeletal disorders in the neck and upper extremities than a referent group with neck pain from the general population. It is hypothesized that exposure to shock-type vibration and unfavorable working postures in ATVs have the capacity to cause peripheral nervous lesions. METHODS: This study was based on a case series analyzed according to a case-case comparison design. The study population consisted of 60 male subjects, including professional drivers of forest machines (n = 15), snowmobiles (n = 15), snowgroomers (n = 15) and referents from the general population (n = 15) all of whom had reported neck pain in a questionnaire and underwent an extensive physical examination of the neck and upper extremities. Based on symptom history, symptoms and signs, and in some cases chemical, electroneurographical and radiological findings, subjects were classified as having a nociceptive or neuropathic disorder or a mix of these types. RESULTS: The occurrence of asymmetrical and focal neuropathies (peripheral nervous lesion), pure or in a mix with a nociceptive disorder was common among cases in the ATV driver groups (47%–79%). This contrasted with the referents that were less often classified as having asymmetrical and focal neuropathy (27%), but instead had more nociceptive disorders. The difference was most pronounced among drivers of snowgroomers, while drivers of forest machines were more frequently classified as having a nociceptive disorder originating in the muscles. CONCLUSION: This study found a high prevalence of assymetrical and focal neuropathies among drivers with pain in the neck, operating various ATVs. It seems as if exposure to shock-type whole-body vibration (WBV) and appurtenant unfavorable postures in ATVs may be associated to peripheral nervous lesions
Determination of the b quark mass at the M_Z scale with the DELPHI detector at LEP
An experimental study of the normalized three-jet rate of b quark events with
respect to light quarks events (light= \ell \equiv u,d,s) has been performed
using the CAMBRIDGE and DURHAM jet algorithms. The data used were collected by
the DELPHI experiment at LEP on the Z peak from 1994 to 2000. The results are
found to agree with theoretical predictions treating mass corrections at
next-to-leading order. Measurements of the b quark mass have also been
performed for both the b pole mass: M_b and the b running mass: m_b(M_Z). Data
are found to be better described when using the running mass. The measurement
yields: m_b(M_Z) = 2.85 +/- 0.18 (stat) +/- 0.13 (exp) +/- 0.19 (had) +/- 0.12
(theo) GeV/c^2 for the CAMBRIDGE algorithm. This result is the most precise
measurement of the b mass derived from a high energy process. When compared to
other b mass determinations by experiments at lower energy scales, this value
agrees with the prediction of Quantum Chromodynamics for the energy evolution
of the running mass. The mass measurement is equivalent to a test of the
flavour independence of the strong coupling constant with an accuracy of 7

Measurement and Interpretation of Fermion-Pair Production at LEP energies above the Z Resonance
This paper presents DELPHI measurements and interpretations of
cross-sections, forward-backward asymmetries, and angular distributions, for
the e+e- -> ffbar process for centre-of-mass energies above the Z resonance,
from sqrt(s) ~ 130 - 207 GeV at the LEP collider. The measurements are
consistent with the predictions of the Standard Model and are used to study a
variety of models including the S-Matrix ansatz for e+e- -> ffbar scattering
and several models which include physics beyond the Standard Model: the
exchange of Z' bosons, contact interactions between fermions, the exchange of
gravitons in large extra dimensions and the exchange of sneutrino in R-parity
