Microcellular Foaming of Polymethylmethacrylate in a Batch Supercritical CO2 Process: Effect of Microstructure on Compression Behavior

    Get PDF
Microcellular foaming of reinforced core/ shell Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) was carried out bymeans of supercritical CO2 in a single-step process. Samples were produced using a technique based on the saturation of the polymer under high pressure of CO2(300 bars,40 C), and cellular structure was controlled by varying the depressurization rate from 0.5 bar/s to 1.6 x10-2 bar/sleading to cell sizes from 1lm to 200l m, and densities from 0.8 to 1.0 g/cm3. It was found that the key parameter to control cell size was depressurization rate, and larger depressurization rates generated bigger cell sizes. On the other hand, variation of the density of the samples was not so considerable. Low rate compression tests were carried out, analyzing the dependence of mechanical parameters such as elastic modulus, yield stress and densification strain with cell size. Moreover, the calculation of the energy absorbed for each sample is presented, showing an optimum of energy absorption up to 50% of deformation in the micrometer cellular range (here at a cell size of about 5 µm). To conclude, a brief comparison between neat PMMA and the core/shell reinforced PMMA has been carried out, analyzing the effect of the core/shell particles in the foaming behavior and mechanical properties

We will analyze one of the primary sources for the study of magical practice in the Ancient World, the curse tablets, the tabellae defixionum. The aim of this research is to undermine the traditional view of women as unique consumers of erotic magic showing a wide variety of gender in relation to the rite of the defixione

Analysis of predictive thermodynamic models for estimation of polycyclic aromatic solid solubility in hot pressurized water

This is an open access article licensed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial License. The ability of two thermodynamic approaches to predict the solubility of solid compounds in hot pressurized water is studied and compared. The Regular Solution Theory, based on the solubility parameter concept, and UNIFACbased models were applied to calculate the solute activity coefficient and then, solubility predictions were compared with experimental data reported in the literature. The analysis was carried out considering polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as model substances, i.e. substances which contain only the aromatic AC and ACH groups, and for which reliable pure physical properties such as melting point, fusion enthalpy and molar volume are available in the literature. The solubility values predicted with the UNIFAC-based models were considerably better than those obtained with the solubility parameter approach. Particularly, the modified Dortmund UNIFAC model presented an appropriate functionality of solubility with temperature, and the extension of this model to other type of aromatic compounds also provided a satisfactory prediction of solubility data. This work has been financed by project S2009-AGR- 1469 from the Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain) and CSD2007-00063 FUN-CFOOD (Programa CONSOLIDERINGENIO 2010) project.Peer Reviewe
