    The effect of sulfur covalent bonding on the electronic shells of silver clusters

    The nature of the bonding in Ag n S m 0/− clusters, n = 1–7; m = 1–4, has been analyzed to understand its effect on the electronic shell structure of silver clusters. First-principle investigations reveal that the sulfur atoms prefer 2 or 3-coordinate sites around a silver core, and that the addition of sulfur makes the planar structures compact. Molecular orbital analysisfinds that the 3p orbitals of sulfur form a bonding orbital and two weakly bonding lone pairs withsilver. We examine the electronic shell structures of Ag 6Sm, which are two electrons deficient of a spherical closed electronic shell prior to the addition of sulfur, and Ag 7Sm − clusters that contain closed electronic shells prior to the addition of sulfur. The Ag 6S4 cluster has a distorted octahedral silver core and an open shell with a multiplicity of 3, while the Ag 7Sn − clusters have compact geometries with enhanced stability, confirming that the clusters maintain their electronic shell structure after bonding with sulfur

    Evaluating the e-Cigarette Epidemic in US Emergency Departments

    Background: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are often thought to be a healthier option to cigarette smoking. e-Cigarettes have been found to overheat and explode. e-Cigarette explosions have caused severe trauma and rendered patients in critical conditions. Inadvertent exposures to liquid nicotine products have caused systemic poisoning injuries. We sought to characterize e-cigarette injuries presenting to emergency departments (ED) in 2018.Methods: We analyzed one year of data from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission’s National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS). Patients presenting with injuries associated with e-cigarette products were manually identified for inclusion. We performed descriptive analyses on demographic factors, affected bodily regions, dispositions, locations of occurrence, and mechanisms of injury. By applying sample weights, nationally representative estimates were calculated.Results: A total of 361 667 injury cases were reported in NEISS (2018). We identified 50 e-cigarette injury cases, generating a national estimate of 1739 (95% CI [1333-2148]) patients presenting to US EDs with e-cigarette injuries in 2018. Approximately 1000 pediatric patients (age ≀17 years) and 700 adult patients (age ≄18 years) were included. The median age when presenting to the ED was 4 years (interquartile range [IQR], 1-25). Over 85% of injuries occurred at home. Ingestion (55.0%) was the most common mechanism of injury, followed by explosion (35.8%).Conclusion: Children and adults are susceptible to injury from e-cigarette products. Changes in manufacturing standards may prevent injuries from these products

    Effect of obesity and site of surgery on perioperative lung volumes

    Background. Although obese patients are thought to be susceptible to postoperative pulmonary complications, there are only limited data on the relationship between obesity and lung volumes after surgery. We studied how surgery and obesity affect lung volumes measured by spirometry. Methods. We prospectively studied 161 patients having either breast surgery (Group A, n=80) or lower abdominal laparotomy (Group B, n=81). Premedication and general anaesthesia were standardized. Spirometry was measured with the patient supine, in a 30° head‐up position. We measured vital capacity (VC), forced vital capacity, peak expiratory flow and forced expiratory volume in 1 s at preoperative assessment (baseline), after premedication (before induction of anaesthesia) and 10-20 min, 1 h and 3 h after extubation. Results. Baseline spirometric values were all within the normal range. All perioperative values decreased significantly with increasing body mass index (BMI). The greatest reduction of mean VC (expressed as percentage of baseline values) occurred after extubation, and was more marked after laparotomy than after breast surgery (23 (sd 14)% vs 20 (14)%). Considering patients according to BMI (30), VC decreased after surgery by 12 (7)%, 24 (8)% and 40 (10)%, respectively. VC recovered more rapidly in Group A. Conclusion. Postoperative reduction in spirometric volumes was related to BMI. Obesity had more effect on VC than the site of surgery. Br J Anaesth 2004; 92: 202-

In the case of string theory, consistency requires spacetime to have 10 (3+1+6) dimensions. The conflict between observation and theory is resolved by making the unobserved dimensions compactified. By simulating a biographical event staged over 24 hours in a hotel room in Berlin on the night that the wall fell on the 9 November 1989 and viewing these events in terms of the string theory we propose an 'observable' ten-dimensional simulation of the proposed reality offered by the string theory. Working closely with researchers at CERN in Geneva and the composer Heinz Reber the works seeks to make the invisible, visible and allow us to simulate the incomprehensible. The research goes further than illustrating a theory by proposing a new perspective on quantum physics through the disciplines of literature (Borges) Art (Wallen) and Music (Reber) by creating a fluid space in perpetual movement and ten differentiated space-time layers
