    User-based redistribution in free-floating bike sharing systems

    We investigate the problem of user-based redistribution for free-floating bike sharing systems (BSS). We present a stochastic model of the bike dynamics and we show that the spatial distribution of bikes is correlated. This is specific to free-floating systems and it results in a substantially reduced service level. Offering incentives to users may stimulate them to change their behavior and usage pattern. We analyze drop-off incentives, derive an incentive methodology and study its potential. We show that by implementing a smart incentive system, the number of bikes for establishing a specific service level can be reduced significantly, even if only a minority of users participates. Under realistic behavioral assumptions, 30–50% reduction of bikes is achievable, which converts into substantial costs savings for the operator. Our research was carried out in the context of the development of the new e-bike sharing system “smide” in Zurich, launched in 2017.     Gabon is an important center of biodiversity in Central Africa. The country contains to date 27 species of palms. However, palms are generally poorly collected as these massive plants are hard to press and curate. Thus, our understanding remains incomplete, especially in Central Africa. We report three new records of two palm species for Gabon: Sclerosperma profizianum Valk. & Sunder. and Eremospatha quiquecostulata Becc.. The former species was collected in southeast Gabon, near Ndindi, while the later was collected in the Massif du Chaillu and Monts de Cristal National Park (Crystal Mountains National Park). The total number of palm species for Gabon is now 29, making it an important centre of palm diversity in Central Africa

    LIFE-SHARE Project: Developing a Digitisation Strategy Toolkit

    This poster will outline the Digitisation Strategy Toolkit created as part of the LIFE-SHARE project. The toolkit is based on the lifecycle model created by the LIFE project and explores the creation, acquisition, ingest, preservation (bit-stream and content) and access requirements for a digitisation strategy. This covers the policies and infrastructure required in libraries to establish successful practices. The toolkit also provides both internal and external resources to support the service. This poster will illustrate how the toolkit works effectively to support digitisation with examples from three case studies at the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York

    Permeation control in hydrogel-layered patterned PET membranes with defined switchable pore geometry – Experiments and numerical simulation

    AbstractPermeation through polymeric membranes can be controlled by surface coating of a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) membrane with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) and inserting pores of defined geometry. When the temperature of the system rises above the volume phase transition temperature, the pores open, which allows permeation of formerly blocked particles. The exact control of the temperature allows defined change of the pore size and therefore enables separation abilities. Free swelling experiments are conducted to obtain the swelling behaviour of PNIPAAm. Then, a temperature expansion model is derived in order to simulate this behaviour with the finite element tool ABAQUS. The gained results are in excellent agreement with the observed shape change. Membranes with permeation control of particles can be used for biomedical application in microfluidics to analyse the size distribution of cells or in chemical information processing as a transistor-like component for an information-bearing chemical species. The possibility to simulate the behaviour of such permeation systems allows computer aided design and prediction of permeation abilities in these areas

    A serosurvey of anti-Ebola Zaire virus nucleoprotein IgG prevalence was carried out among Ebola virus disease survivors and their Community Contacts in Bombali District, Sierra Leone. Our data suggest that the specie of Ebola virus (Zaire) responsible of the 2013-2016 epidemic in West Africa may cause mild or asymptomatic infection in a proportion of cases, possibly due to an efficient immune response

    Tuning the structure, stability and responsivity of polymeric arsenical nanoparticles using polythiol cross-linkers

    The use of organic arsenicals in polymer chemistry and biomaterials science is limited despite the distinctive and versatile chemistry of arsenic. The interchangeable oxidation states of arsenic and the subsequent changes in chemical properties make it a promising candidate for redox-responsive materials. Thus, reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization has been employed for the first time to synthesize thermoresponsive organic arsenical containing block copolymers. The polymers undergo simultaneous self-assembly and cross-linking, via the organic arsenical pendant groups, under reductive conditions (to reduce As(V) to As(III)) in the presence of polythiol reagents as cross-linkers. The formation of As–S bonds stabilizes the nanoparticles formed (Dh = 19–29 nm) and enables the stability and responsivity to oxidative stress of the particles, in aqueous and model biological solutions, to be tuned as a function of the number of thiols in the cross-linker or the [SH]/[As] stoichiometric ratio. The parent block copolymers and nanoparticles are nontoxic in vitro, and the tunable responsivity of these nanoparticles and the (bio)chemical activity of organic arsenical reagents could be advantageous for targeted drug delivery and the other bio(nano)medical applications. To the best our knowledge, this is the first time that arsenic–thiolate (As–S) bonding has been employed for stimuli-responsive cross-linking of polymeric nanoparticles

    A Decision Support System to Predict Acute Fish Toxicity

    We present a decision support system using a Bayesian network to predict acute fish toxicity from multiple lines of evidence. Fish embryo toxicity testing has been proposed as an alternative to using juvenile or adult fish in acute toxicity testing for hazard assessments of chemicals. The European Chemicals Agency has recommended the development of a so-called weight-of-evidence approach for strengthening the evidence from fish embryo toxicity testing. While weight-of-evidence approaches in the ecotoxicology and ecological risk assessment community in the past have been largely qualitative, we have developed a Bayesian network for using fish embryo toxicity data in a quantitative approach. The system enables users to efficiently predict the potential toxicity of a chemical substance based on multiple types of evidence including physical and chemical properties, quantitative structure-activity relationships, toxicity to algae and daphnids, and fish gill cytotoxicity. The system is demonstrated on three chemical substances of different levels of toxicity. It is considered as a promising step towards a probabilistic weight-of-evidence approach to predict acute fish toxicity from fish embryo toxicity.publishedVersio
