The Implementation of Life Space Crisis Intervention as a School-Wide Strategy for Reducing Violence and Supporting Students\u27 Continuation in Public Schools
The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of implementing Life Space Crisis Intervention as a school-wide strategy for reducing school violence.
Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI) is a strength-based verbal interaction strategy (Long, Fecser, Wood, 2001). LSCI utilizes naturally occurring crisis situations as teachable moments
The literature review analyzes school violence, violence prevention programs and effective change practices.
This study employed mixed research methods with a sample population of public school, LSCI trained, staff members in Central New York.
The result of this study supports two conclusions: LSCI is an effective school-wide strategy, but was not implemented effectively or that LSCI is effective as part of a school-wide violence prevention continuum. Further research is warranted
Quantum-Assisted Greedy Algorithms
We show how to leverage quantum annealers (QAs) to better select candidates
in greedy algorithms. Unlike conventional greedy algorithms that employ
problem-specific heuristics for making locally optimal choices at each stage,
we use QAs that sample from the ground state of problem-dependent Hamiltonians
at cryogenic temperatures and use retrieved samples to estimate the probability
distribution of problem variables. More specifically, we look at each spin of
the Ising model as a random variable and contract all problem variables whose
corresponding uncertainties are negligible. Our empirical results on a D-Wave
2000Q quantum processor demonstrate that the proposed quantum-assisted greedy
algorithm (QAGA) scheme can find notably better solutions compared to the
state-of-the-art techniques in the realm of quantum annealingComment: in Proceedings of the 2022 International Geoscience and Remote

Does the Personal Trait Play a Significant Role on Chinese Students’ Perception of Sales Profession as a Career?
The purpose of this study is to investigate students’ perceptions of personal selling as a career in the developing nations, China in this case. Research has been conducted underscoring the negative perception of the sales profession among students in the United States, particularly in the areas of ethics and honesty (Futrell, 2007; Lee et al, 2007); the scarcity of information relating to the profession can exacerbate the negative image that is presented by this profession. Logistic regression and Z test are used in this research to assess whether Chinese students are averse to careers in personal selling just as is the case in the United States. The results do confirm the results of preceding studies; personal factors play a significant role in predicting students’ perception of sales profession as a career; Chinese students have a biased perception about sales as career; however, interestingly few dimensions showed significant effect
Cellulose-inorganic hybrids of strongly reduced thermal conductivity
The employment of atomic layer deposition and spin coating techniques for preparing inorganic-organic hybrid multilayer structures of alternating ZnO-CNC layers was explored in this study. Helium ion microscopy and X-ray reflectivity showed the superlattice formation for the nanolaminate structures and atomic force microscopy established the efficient control of the CNCs surface coverage on the Al-doped Zeta nO by manipulating the concentration of the spin coating solution. Thickness characterization of the hybrid structures was performed via both ellipsometry and X-ray reflectivity and the thermal conductivity was examined by time domain thermoreflectance technique. It appears that even the incorporation of a limited amount of CNCs between the ZnO laminates strongly suppresses the thermal conductivity. Even small, submonolayer amounts of CNCs worked as a more efficient insulating material than hydroquinone or cellulose nanofibers which have been employed in previous studies.Peer reviewe
Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Based Computational Fluid Dynamics/Fluid-Structure Interaction Pilot Study to Detect Early Vascular Changes in Pediatric Patients with Type 1 Diabetes
We hypothesized that pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes have cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) detectable differences in thoracic aortic wall properties and hemodynamics leading to significant local differences in indices of wall shear stress, when compared with age-matched control subjects without diabetes. Pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes were recruited from Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and compared with controls. All underwent morning CMR scanning, 4-limb blood pressure, brachial artery reactivity testing, and venipuncture. Patient-specific computational fluid dynamics modeling with fluid–structure interaction, based on CMR data, determined regional time-averaged wall shear stress (TAWSS) and oscillatory shear index (OSI). Twenty type 1 diabetic subjects, median age 15.8 years (11.6–18.4) and 8 controls 15.4 years (10.3–18.2) were similar except for higher glucose, hemoglobin A1c, and triglycerides for type 1 diabetic subjects. Lower flow-mediated dilation was seen for those with type 1 diabetes (6.5) versus controls (7.8), p = 0.036. For type 1 diabetic subjects, the aorta had more regions with high TAWSS when compared to controls. OSI maps appeared similar. Flow-mediated dilation positively correlated with age at diabetes diagnosis (r = 0.468, p = 0.038) and hemoglobin A1c (r = 0.472, p = 0.036), but did not correlate with aortic distensibility, TAWSS, or OSI. TAWSS did not correlate with any clinical parameter for either group. CMR shows regional differences in aortic wall properties for young diabetic patients. Some local differences in wall shear stress indices were also observed, but a longitudinal study is now warranted
Negative Effect of Smoking on the Performance of the QuantiFERON TB Gold in Tube Test.
False negative and indeterminate Interferon Gamma Release Assay (IGRA) results are a well documented problem. Cigarette smoking is known to increase the risk of tuberculosis (TB) and to impair Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) responses to antigenic challenge, but the impact of smoking on IGRA performance is not known. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of smoking on IGRA performance in TB patients in a low and high TB prevalence setting respectively. Patients with confirmed TB from Denmark (DK, n = 34; 20 smokers) and Tanzania (TZ, n = 172; 23 smokers) were tested with the QuantiFERON-TB Gold In tube (QFT). Median IFN-γ level in smokers and non smokers were compared and smoking was analysed as a risk factor for false negative and indeterminate QFT results. Smokers from both DK and TZ had lower IFN-γ antigen responses (median 0.9 vs. 4.2 IU/ml, p = 0.04 and 0.4 vs. 1.6, p < 0.01), less positive (50 vs. 86%, p = 0.03 and 48 vs. 75%, p < 0.01) and more false negative (45 vs. 0%, p < 0.01 and 26 vs. 11%, p = 0.04) QFT results. In Tanzanian patients, logistic regression analysis adjusted for sex, age, HIV and alcohol consumption showed an association of smoking with false negative (OR 17.1, CI: 3.0-99.1, p < 0.01) and indeterminate QFT results (OR 5.1, CI: 1.2-21.3, p = 0.02). Cigarette smoking was associated with false negative and indeterminate IGRA results in both a high and a low TB endemic setting independent of HIV status
Haptoglobin Phenotype, Preeclampsia Risk and the Efficacy of Vitamin C and E Supplementation to Prevent Preeclampsia in a Racially Diverse Population
Haptoglobin's (Hp) antioxidant and pro-angiogenic properties differ between the 1-1, 2-1, and 2-2 phenotypes. Hp phenotype affects cardiovascular disease risk and treatment response to antioxidant vitamins in some non-pregnant populations. We previously demonstrated that preeclampsia risk was doubled in white Hp 2-1 women, compared to Hp 1-1 women. Our objectives were to determine whether we could reproduce this finding in a larger cohort, and to determine whether Hp phenotype influences lack of efficacy of antioxidant vitamins in preventing preeclampsia and serious complications of pregnancy-associated hypertension (PAH). This is a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial in which 10,154 low-risk women received daily vitamin C and E, or placebo, from 9-16 weeks gestation until delivery. Hp phenotype was determined in the study prediction cohort (n = 2,393) and a case-control cohort (703 cases, 1,406 controls). The primary outcome was severe PAH, or mild or severe PAH with elevated liver enzymes, elevated serum creatinine, thrombocytopenia, eclampsia, fetal growth restriction, medically indicated preterm birth or perinatal death. Preeclampsia was a secondary outcome. Odds ratios were estimated by logistic regression. Sampling weights were used to reduce bias from an overrepresentation of women with preeclampsia or the primary outcome. There was no relationship between Hp phenotype and the primary outcome or preeclampsia in Hispanic, white/other or black women. Vitamin supplementation did not reduce the risk of the primary outcome or preeclampsia in women of any phenotype. Supplementation increased preeclampsia risk (odds ratio 3.30; 95% confidence interval 1.61-6.82, p<0.01) in Hispanic Hp 2-2 women. Hp phenotype does not influence preeclampsia risk, or identify a subset of women who may benefit from vitamin C and E supplementation to prevent preeclampsia
Less than 10 percent of star formation in z=0.6 massive galaxies is triggered by major interactions
Both observations and simulations show that major tidal interactions or
mergers between gas-rich galaxies can lead to intense bursts of starformation.
Yet, the average enhancement in star formation rate (SFR) in major mergers and
the contribution of such events to the cosmic SFR are not well estimated. Here
we use photometric redshifts, stellar masses and UV SFRs from COMBO-17, 24
micron SFRs from Spitzer and morphologies from two deep HST cosmological survey
fields (ECDFS/GEMS and A901/STAGES) to study the enhancement in SFR as a
function of projected galaxy separation. We apply two-point projected
correlation function techniques, which we augment with morphologically-selected
very close pairs (separation <2 arcsec) and merger remnants from the HST
imaging. Our analysis confirms that the most intensely star-forming systems are
indeed interacting or merging. Yet, for massive (M* > 10^10 Msun) star-forming
galaxies at 0.4<z<0.8, we find that the SFRs of galaxies undergoing a major
interaction (mass ratios <1:4 and separations < 40 kpc) are only 1.80 +/- 0.30
times higher than the SFRs of non-interacting galaxies when averaged over all
interactions and all stages of the interaction, in good agreement with other
observational works.
We demonstrate that these results imply that <10% of star formation at 0.4 <
z < 0.8 is triggered directly by major mergers and interactions; these events
are not important factors in the build-up of stellar mass since z=1.Comment: Submitted to ApJ. 41 pages, 11 figure
Carpenter-Coustan Compared With National Diabetes Data Group Criteria for Diagnosing Gestational Diabetes
Use of Carpenter-Coustan compared to National Diabetes Data Group (NDDG) criteria increases the number of women diagnosed with GDM by 30-50%, but whether treatment of this milder GDM reduces adverse outcomes is unknown. We explored the effects of the diagnostic criteria used on the benefits of GDM treatment
