The impact of Trump's tariff announcements on the world financial markets
Early in 2017, Donald Trump has one of the most unexpected elections for United States
(US) president in history. Since November 2017, President Trump has ruthlessly targeted the
economic relationship between the European Union (EU) and China. Consequently, during
2018, 2019 and early 2020, President Trump conducted a series of announcements threatening
the EU and China with tariffs and protectionism measures. Following, many scholars studied
the macroeconomic impact. However, a clear view of the impact on the main world financial
stock markets was lacking. On this study, we measure the total impact caused by all tariff
announcements per trade war in the main world financial markets. Using an event study
methodology, and assuming the implied overall Cumulative Abnormal Return within the
Cumulative Average Abnormal Return, we estimate the total impact in five different scopes:
World, North America, South America, Europe and Asia.
Results revealed that on both trade wars, as expected, the Asian, European, and North
American Indices present significant results for almost all analysed indices. However, on the
South American scope, only one index shows statistically significant results.
mercados financeiros mundiais. Usando a metodologia de estudo de eventos e assumindo o
Retorno Cumulativo Anormal geral implícito no Retorno Cumulativo Médio Anormal,
estimamos o impacto total em cinco diferentes contextos: Mundo, América do Norte, América
do Sul, Europa e Ásia.
Porém, no âmbito sul-americano, apenas um índice apresenta resultados
estatisticamente significativos
The impact of monetary policy on the mutual fund flow-performance relationship: international evidence
In this study we use data from 36 countries in the 2000-2015 period to assess the impact of monetary policy on the flow-performance relationship. We find that consistent increases (decreases) in policy rates results in equity mutual funds outflows (inflows). We also find that the impact of policy on the flow-performance sensitivity is scarce. Nevertheless, the results for offshore markets suggest that investors tend to sell more poor performers when policy rate decreases. Contrarily, in periods when monetary policy tightens, investors in European mutual funds tend to buy fewer top performers.
We also find that in periods of higher volatility and periods of decrease in the policy rate, investors tend to react more (less) to top (poor) performers. Hence, in this circumstances, monetary policy is a key determinant of the convexity of the flow-performance relationship.
Study of the Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) technology, in the automotive industry
The last few decades in the automotive industry have been marked by a heavy concern with
the environment, saving energy and reducing material wastage, while aiming to maintain
good mechanical properties, essential in the components usage.
Additive manufacturing (AM) techniques present themselves as a viable option in the matter,
with Laser Metal Deposition (LMD), rising as one of the most promising techniques within
this category, capable of producing near-net shape components, with a layer upon layer
construction of three-dimensional solid parts from a 3D CAD model, with good mechanical
properties and acceptable surface finishing.
Laser Metal Deposition is a relatively recent technique, which is made noticeable by the lack
of clarification about the influence of several parameters in the final component’s
characteristics, ultimately leading to a scarce availability of the process in the market.
This paper aims to clarify and evaluate, how LMD produced parts can suit the automotive
industry, by measuring and analysing their behaviour under several mechanical tests

Study of gold nanoparticle assisted neuron stimulation
The unique proprieties exhibited by nanoscale particles compared to their macro size counterparts allow for the creation of novel neural activity manipula-tion procedures. In this sense, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) can be used to stimu-late the electrical activity of neuron by converting light into heat.
During this dissertation, AuNPs are synthesized by the citrate reduction method, resulting in a hydrodynamic diameter of approximately 16 nm and an absorbance peak of 530 nm. A system to control a 532 nm laser and measure the temperature variation was custom built from scratch specifically for this project. Temperature is then measured with recourse to a thermocouple and through changes in impedance. The built system had in consideration the necessities pre-sented by in vivo tests.
Trials were performed by measuring the temperature rise of colloidal AuNP solutions, having the temperature variation reached a maximum of ap-proximately 18 ºC relative to control trials; successfully showing that light is ef-fectively transduced into heat when AuNPs are present.
This novel approach enables an alternative to optogenetics, which require the animal to be genetically modified in order to allow neuron stimulation
Functional studies on zeb transcription factors in glioblastoma
Glioblastoma (GBM) remains the deadliest primary brain tumour in adults, in part due
to its highly invasive nature. Although not a classical model of epithelial-to-mesenchymal
transition (EMT), recent work from our group has implicated the EMT transcription factor (TF)
ZEB1 in regulating an "EMT-like" process that contributes to GBM tumour invasion. It is also
known that ZEB1 works both as an activator and repressor of gene expression in various gene
expression paradigms, including in GBM. Another member of the ZEB family, ZEB2, has also
been implicated in GBM pathophysiology, but how its function differs from that of ZEB1,
remains unclear. In this work, we focused on the role of ZEB2 in GBM, and how it compares
with ZEB1. First, we compared the activity of ZEB proteins in transcriptional assays, performing
reporter gene assays in transfected cells. Results show ZEB2 has repressive activity in two
gene expression paradigms where ZEB1 functions as a transcriptional activator, revealing
distinct features of these TFs. Next, we investigated how the two ZEB TFs compare in
correlational studies using transcriptomics data from large cohorts of GBM tumours. We found
both TFs to be differently expressed across different GBM subtypes. However, we discovered
high inconsistency of results obtained across data sets, highlighting unexpected differences
between transcriptomics databases. Last, we compared how ZEB TFs are recruited to
regulatory regions of target genes in a cellular model of GBM using chromatin
immunoprecipitation followed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (ChIP-qPCR). This
showed that the opposing transcriptional activities observed are both associated with binding
of each TF to regulatory regions. Moreover, the ChIP protocol established was used for
preparing a ChIP-sequencing sample to compare the genome-wide binding profiles of both
Role of magnetic resonance imaging in the detection and characterization of solid pancreatic nodules: an update
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is the most common malignant tumor of the pancreas. The remaining pancreatic tumors are a diverse group of pancreatic neoplasms that comprises cystic pancreatic neoplasms, endocrine tumors and other uncommon pancreatic tumors. Due to the excellent soft tissue contrast resolution, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is frequently able to readily separate cystic from noncystic tumors. Cystic tumors are often easy to diagnose with MRI; however, noncystic non-adenocarcinoma tumors may show a wide spectrum of imaging features, which can potentially mimic ductal adenocarcinoma. MRI is a reliable technique for the characterization of pancreatic lesions. The implementation of novel motion-resistant pulse sequences and respiratory gating techniques, as well as the recognized benefits of MR cholangiopancreatography, make MRI a very accurate examination for the evaluation of pancreatic masses. MRI has the distinctive ability of non-invasive assessment of the pancreatic ducts, pancreatic parenchyma, neighbouring soft tissues, and vascular network in one examination. MRI can identify different characteristics of various solid pancreatic lesions, potentially allowing the differentiation of adenocarcinoma from other benign and malignant entities. In this review we describe the MRI protocols and MRI characteristics of various solid pancreatic lesions. Recognition of these characteristics may establish the right diagnosis or at least narrow the differential diagnosis, thus avoiding unnecessary tests or procedures and permitting better management
