This article is part of the Research Topic: Harnessing useful rhizosphere microorganisms for pathogen and pest biocontrol.-- Edited by: Aurelio Ciancio, Corné M. J. Pieterse and Jesús Mercado-Blanco.Micromonospora is a Gram positive bacterium that can be isolated from nitrogen fixing nodules from healthy leguminous plants, where they could be beneficial to the plant. Their plant growth promoting activity in legume and non-legume plants has been previously demonstrated. The present study explores the ability of Micromonospora strains to control fungal pathogens and to stimulate plant immunity. Micromonospora strains isolated from surface sterilized nodules of alfalfa showed in vitro antifungal activity against several pathogenic fungi. Moreover, root inoculation of tomato plants with these Micromonospora strains effectively reduced leaf infection by the fungal pathogen Botrytis cinerea, despite spatial separation between both microorganisms. This induced systemic resistance, confirmed in different tomato cultivars, is long lasting. Gene expression analyses evidenced that Micromonospora stimulates the plant capacity to activate defense mechanisms upon pathogen attack. The defensive response of tomato plants inoculated with Micromonospora spp. differs from that of non-inoculated plants, showing a stronger induction of jasmonate-regulated defenses when the plant is challenged with a pathogen. The hypothesis of jasmonates playing a key role in this defense priming effect was confirmed using defense-impaired tomato mutants, since the JA-deficient line def1 was unable to display a long term induced resistance upon Micromonospora spp. inoculation. In conclusion, nodule isolated Micromonospora strains should be considered excellent candidates as biocontrol agents as they combine both direct antifungal activity against plant pathogens and the ability to prime plant immunity. This work was supported by MICINN Grant AGL2010-17380 and AGL-2012-39923. The Avilés Canyons System (ACS) is located in the Cantabrian Sea (Bay of Biscay) and is composed of three canyons. It was declared Site of Community Importance (SCI: C ESZZ12003) within the Natura 2000 Network (Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, 2014) due to their diversity of species and vulnerable habitats (Sánchez et.al., 2014). During the years 2010 - 2012 several campaigns of the INDEMARES LIFE - ACS project were carried out. This study includes the zone that goes from the beginning of the continental slope to the maximum depth sampled in the bathyal zone (depth range between 266 and 2291 m). A total of 7413 specimens which correspond to 48 species, were collected from 50 stations. The most abundant species were Ophiocten affinis (Lütken, 1858) with 4092 specimens and Ophiothamnus affinis Ljungman, 1872 with 1842. The most frequent ones were Ophiactis abyssicola (M. Sars, 1861) and Ophiacantha bidentata (Bruzelius, 1805) present in 48% and 26% of stations respectively. Comparing our species with public databases (OBIS, GBIF) and the bibliography, five potential new records have been found for the Cantabrian Sea, part of the North-Atlantic Marine Subdivision (Lavín et. al., 2012).Universidad de Málaga.

    Get PDF
Thyme essential oil is a natural compound with antibacterial and antioxidant activity which are really interesting to be used as functional ingredient in food, cosmetics and agrochemical industries. Alkyl polypentosides are a new class of surfactants which coming from agricultural renewable resources as wheat straw. They are non-toxic and biodegradable surfactants commercially known as Appyclean. In this case, Applyclean 6548 was studied. This non-ionic surfactant is solid and it is immiscible in water so, the emulsifier was melted and dissolved in the oil phase. For this reason, the influence of thermal treatment was studied in a 90.9/9.1 mass ratio (thyme essential oil/Appyclean 6548) on physical stability of these dispersions. Additionally, this influence was investigated on the stability and droplet size distribution of thyme essential oil/W emulsions. In order to achieve this goal laser diffraction and multiple light scattering techniques were used.

Psychiatric disorders as a whole and some of them in a specific way constitute a public health problem in all countries and entail an economic cost associated, both directly and indirectly. In addition, some issues are to be considered when the sick person exercises his right to work, beyond diagnosis and treatment of his/her disease. Companies need to take some actions whether adaptive or restrictive for the affected employee, and the adoption of socio-labor measures which will have administrative and legal impact. The medical publications listed in the reference database (Pub-Med) concerning these pathologies will be reviewed in this article with emphasis in those clinical aspects that correlate health care with socio-labor implications. Paralelly, this work reviews the impact of these diseases in the legal databases (Westlaw Insignis) and their differentiation according to each disorder and its corresponding area of the law.The conclusions of this work, through the current knowledge of the situation, will serve to develop possible preventive strategies to address future medico-legal conflicts as well as to develop more coordinated approaches among all the stakeholders

G.-A.The elderly population undergoes a series of physiological and sociological changes common to old age with a high probability of suffering degenerative illness and malnutrition. A dessert rich in phenolic compounds has been designed by using concentrated juices of grape, cherry, blackberry, blackcurrant and raspberry with the aim of it being used as a complementary food in adulthood. In the present study, we investigated the effect of the intake of this dessert (a jar of 200 g daily for a period of 2 weeks), with an antioxidant activity equivalent to ten servings of fruits and vegetables, on several markers of oxidative and antioxidant status in DNA and plasma in a group of elderly individuals. Non-smoking institutionalised elderly subjects were recruited from a pool of volunteers in an old-age home in Murcia (Spain). Twenty-two subjects (six men and sixteen women) participated in the study. The study was designed as a randomised intervention trial with a period of 2 weeks. At days 1 and 15, blood samples were collected to analyse total antioxidant capacity, biochemical parameters, antioxidant vitamins, LDL peroxidation, and DNA damage in peripheral blood lymphocytes. The conclusion of the present study is that a 2-week intervention with our dessert enriched with natural polyphenol compounds in elderly individuals does not give enough time to find changes in the antioxidant and oxidative status. Also, the view that the marked antioxidant ability of polyphenols in vitro does not translate to analogous effects in vivo was confirmed. Moreover, a highly oxidative stress status during ageing was confirmed, together with the need to perform follow-up nutritional studies to improve this situation

Especias, hierbas medicinales y plantas.

Various herbs, plants and spices have been important tools for traditional medicine and sometimes magic. Before the widespread use of industrially manufactured drugs, very common remedies, made out of herbs were prescribed, many of them with proven efficacy that have been rediscovered and used nowadays. Today, science offers contrasted information on the beneficial effects that spices may represent for certain pathologies and their potential medical benefits that might arise in the horizon of science. Eastern cultures, such as India or China, spent years incorporating their experiences in this line of study. This work represents a compilation of some of these publications, leaving the field opened to future researchers, western and especially Spanish, on potential treatment options offered by spices and plants, a path where our experience is still limited
