    From C/Mrkos to P/Halley: 30 years of cometary spectroscopy

    An Atlas of Cometary Spectra was compiled, as a sequel to the well-known Atlas published by Swings and Haser in 1956. The new atlas comprises some 400 reproductions of cometary spectra secured in the world's largest observatories during the three decades or so from the passage of comet Mrkos 1957 V, for which the very first high-dispersion spectrum was obtained, to the return of Halley's comet. The illustrations refer to 40 different comet apparitions; they are grouped into a set of 186 loose 11 x 14 in. plates, while the texts, comments, and relevant data are given in a separate booklet. The main purpose of this atlas is to show in detail the tremendous progress which was achieved in cometary spectroscopy during the period covered, essentially thanks to the use of high-resolution coude spectrographs and large telescopes, the considerable extension of the observed wavelength range, and the advent of electronic detectors. It is divided into two parts. Part 1, which contains about two-thirds of the selected material, presents photographic spectra, while electronically recorded spectra covering the vacuum ultraviolet, through the optical, infrared, and radio regions appear in Part 2

ACS Nano. 2011;5(10):8420-8425.On-surface synthesis in ultrahigh vacuum provides a promising strategy for creating thermally and chemically stable molecular structures at surfaces. The two-dimensional confinement of the educts, the possibility of working at higher (or lower) temperatures in the absence of solvent, and the templating effect of the surface bear the potential of preparing compounds that cannot be obtained in solution. Moreover, covalently linked conjugated molecules allow for efficient electron transport and are, thus, particularly interesting for future molecular electronics applications. When having these applications in mind, electrically insulating substrates are mandatory to provide sufficient decoupling of the molecular structure from the substrate surface. So far, however, on-surface synthesis has been achieved only on metallic substrates. Here we demonstrate the covalent linking of organic molecules on a bulk insulator, namely, calcite. We deliberately employ the strong electrostatic interaction between the carboxylate groups of halide-substituted benzoic adds and the surface calcium cations to prevent molecular desorption and to reach homolytic cleavage temperatures. This allows for the formation of aryl radicals and intermolecular coupling. By varying the number and position of the halide substitution, we rationally design the resulting structures, revealing straight lines, zigzag structures, and dimers, thus providing clear evidence for the covalent linking. Our results constitute an important step toward exploiting on-surface synthesis for molecular electronics and optics applications, which require electrically insulating rather than metallic supporting substrates

    We construct a stationary Markov process with trivial tail sigma-field and a nondegenerate observation process such that the corresponding nonlinear filtering process is not uniquely ergodic. This settles in the negative a conjecture of the author in the ergodic theory of nonlinear filters arising from an erroneous proof in the classic paper of H. Kunita (1971), wherein an exchange of intersection and supremum of sigma-fields is taken for granted.Comment: 20 page

    One-pot synthesis and AFM imaging of a triangular aramide macrocycle

    Macrocyclizations in exceptionally good yields were observed during the self-condensation of N-benzylated phenyl p-aminobenzoates in the presence of LiHMDS to yield three-membered cyclic aramides that adopt a triangular shape. An ortho-alkyloxy side chain on the N-benzyl protecting group is necessary for the macrocyclization to occur. Linear polymers are formed exclusively in the absence of this Li-chelating group. A model that explains the lack of formation of other cyclic congeners and the demand for an N-(o-alkoxybenzyl) protecting group is provided on the basis of DFT calculations. High-resolution AFM imaging of the prepared molecular triangles on a calcite(10.4) surface shows individual molecules arranged in groups of four due to strong surface templating effects and hydrogen bonding between the molecular triangles

    Az ún. salutogenezis modell olyan keretet kínál, amelyben a koherencia élmény bevezetésével lehetőség nyílik az „egész”-ség dinamikus értelmezésére. Vizsgálatunkban a Richard Rahe-féle, az „élet értelme” koherencia kérdőív összefüggéseit vizsgáltuk az egészségi állapottal. A Hungarostudy 2002 felmérés a 18 évesnél idősebb magyar népességet életkor, nem és terület szerint képviseli. 12 640 személlyel vettünk fel otthoni interjút. Az így vizsgált koherencia mutatót az egészségi állapot igen fontos előrejelzőjének találtuk. Ha az adatokat életkor, nem és iskolázottság szerint korrigáltuk, az egészségi állapot önbecslése mintegy 10-szer, a munkaképesség 8-szor jobb, a depresszió valószínűsége 7-szer alacsonyabb volt. Az „élet értelme” mutató igen szoros kapcsolatban áll az önhatékonysággal, a problémaorientált megbirkózással, a társas támogatással, ezzel szemben kevésbé függ az iskolázottságtól, az életkortól és a nemtől

    Platelet Function in Stored Heparinised Autologous Blood Is Not Superior to in Patient Platelet Function during Routine Cardiopulmonary Bypass

    Background: In cardiac surgery, cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and unfractionated heparin have negative effects on blood platelet function. In acute normovolemic haemodilution autologous unfractionated heparinised blood is stored ex-vivo and retransfused at the end of the procedure to reduce (allogeneic) transfusion requirements. In this observational study we assessed whether platelet function is better preserved in ex vivo stored autologous blood compared to platelet function in the patient during CPB. Methodology/Principal Finding: We measured platelet aggregation responses pre-CPB, 5 min after the start of CPB, at the end of CPB, and after unfractionated heparin reversal, using multiple electrode aggregometry (MultiplateH) with adenosine diphosphate (ADP), thrombin receptor activating peptide (TRAP) and ristocetin activated test cells. We compared blood samples taken from the patient with samples taken from 100 ml ex-vivo stored blood, which we took to mimick blood storage during normovolemic haemodilution. Platelet function declined both in ex-vivo stored blood as well as in blood taken from the patient. At the end of CPB there were no differences in platelet aggregation responses between samples from the ex vivo stored blood and the patient.     Genetics of Type A Behavior in Two European Countries: Evidence for Sibling Interaction

    Young male twins in The Netherlands and England completed the Jenkins Activity Survey (Dutch and English versions, respectively), a measure of Type A behavior. Separate model fitting analysis revealed a similar pattern of variance estimates and associated goodness of fit across the two countries. The data were then analyzed concurrently, with a scalar parameter included to account for differences in variance due to the disparity of the measurement scales. A model including additive genetic and individual environmental effects gave a good explanation to the data. The heritability estimate was 0.28. Models of social interaction and dominance explained the data even better, the former being preferred. The twins' parents were included in the analysis to examine population variation for Type A behavior intergenerationally. There was evidence for individual environmental experiences having a greater influence on Type A behavior in the older generation. © 1991 Plenum Publishing Corporation

    A competição das plantas daninhas com as forrageiras em áreas de pastagens ocorre desde o momento da semeadura e perdura até mesmo após o estabelecimento do pasto (DIAS-FILHO, 1990; DIAS-FILHO, 2006), sendo que o manejo destas plantas envolve práticas associadas ao controle mecânico (remoção das plantas), controle químico (uso de herbicidas) e a queima (SANTOS et al., 2006). Na pecuária, algumas plantas daninhas são indesejáveis por prejudicar a produção animal, competir com as forrageiras, serem tóxicas e/ou causarem ferimentos ao homem ou aos animais (POTT; POTT; SOUZA, 2006). Nos casos do Cerrado e do Pantanal, parte considerável das espécies daninhas de pastagens são plantas nativas, ou seja, já possuem associações com espécies locais e são oportunistas em relação à colonização de novos habitats (POTT; POTT; SOUZA, 2006; SANTOS et al., 2006). Uma vez que o conhecimento da fenologia de plantas daninhas é crucial para práticas de controle mais adequadas das mesmas (SPADOTT et al., 1994; DIAS et al., 2013), o objetivo deste trabalho foi registrar e caracterizar os eventos fenológicos de três espécies de plantas daninhas de pastagens em uma área de ecótono Cerrado-Pantanal: Croton campestris A. St.-Hil. (Euphorbiaceae), Sapium haematospermum Müll. Arg. (Euphorbiaceae) e Annona crassiflora Mart. (Annonaceae) e fornecer subsídios para o manejo e a conservação do ecótono Cerrado-Pantanal

    Atomic-resolution imaging of clean and hydrogen-terminated C(100)-(2x1) diamond surfaces using noncontact AFM

Physical Review B. 2010;81(20): 201403.High-purity, type IIa diamond is investigated by noncontact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM). We present atomic-resolution images of both the electrically conducting hydrogen-terminated C(100)-(2 x 1) : H surface and the insulating C(100)-(2 x 1) surface. For the hydrogen-terminated surface, a nearly square unit cell is imaged. In contrast to previous scanning tunneling microscopy experiments, NC-AFM imaging allows both hydrogen atoms within the unit cell to be resolved individually, indicating a symmetric dimer alignment. Upon removing the surface hydrogen, the diamond sample becomes insulating. We present atomic-resolution images, revealing individual C-C dimers. Our results provide real-space experimental evidence for a (2 x 1) dimer reconstruction of the truly insulating C(100) surface
