As the incorporation of environmental issues advances in organizations through its innovation agenda, the field of organizational learning emerges in this process as an important element of analysis. Based on this perspective, it is suggested that the notions of organizational learning and learning for sustainability should be revisited as antecedents of the environmental innovation process itself, suggesting the emergence of a new field of analysis – the Organizational Learning for Environmental Innovation. Thus, this work aims to identify the relationships between the elements of organizational learning, learning for sustainability and environmental innovation and the way in which they interact, in order to promote greater awareness of innovative environmental practices. For that, a conceptual model of analysis was elaborated, which was applied to a company of the electric sector. Learning from regulation and the role played by the entrepreneur presented themselves as the most important inductors in this process, while the pressure of product users was not recognized as a variable that induces learning processes. On the other hand, the category of environmental education is underestimated, for it an important tool, which generates changes in routines that could guide organizations to adopt environmental innovations. Keywords: organizational learning, learning for sustainability, environmental innovation.À medida que a incorporação das questões ambientais avança nas organizações por meio de sua agenda de inovação, o campo da aprendizagem organizacional surge nesse processo como importante elemento de análise. The use of management tools induces firms to achieve competitive advantage. In this sense the advent of the internet facilitates the dissemination of information and integrates the actors involved in a given supply chain. Several national and international searches have pointed to a positive association between these factors and an important study conducted in Taiwan, in 2010, confirmed this perspective relating the use of ERP tools with gains in supply chain management.  The present study aimed to replicate in the Brazilian context the research conducted in Taiwan on the association between uses of ERP tools with gains in supply chain management. For this, we carried out a survey, totaling 135 respondents from various industries. The result showed the confirmation of several hypotheses, with rejection of only three of the nine presented. El uso de herramientas de gestión induce a las empresas el logro de una ventaja competitiva . En este sentido, la llegada de la Internet facilita la difusión de la información y la integración de los actores involucrados en la cadena de suministro. Street food: factors influencing perception of product quality

    Get PDF
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether the perceptions of cleanliness and organization of the point of sale, hygiene and training of those who serve the public (service) and healthiness of the products, constitute a base for the perception of the quality of food sold in the street. Studies about development of street food trade have gained relevance in academic debate because of its social and economic significance. Usually, aspects related to sanitary issues are presented, and the factors that influence consumer perception regarding quality of food consumed are less explored. This was the focus of this work. The relationships among possible predecessors – attendance, cleanliness, organization and healthiness – were tested, all acting together, influencing the variable perception of product quality. Competitive models were tested because of theoretical divergences regarding the relationship between quality and healthiness, not yet totally clear in the literature. Design/methodology/approach – A quantitative survey was carried out in the city of Diadema (SP, Brazil), getting 603 respondents, with data and theoretical models analyzed by structural equation modeling. Findings – Results indicated that organization variable is not significant regarding perception of product quality, while attendance and healthiness directly affect this perception. On the other hand, cleanliness influences perceived healthiness and this, in turn, reinforces perception of product quality. Practical implications – The focus of street food traders should be on clerk cleanliness and politeness (characteristics related to the service) that end up influencing the perception that the consumer develops regarding healthiness (characteristic related to product quality). Originality/value – Usually research studies on this theme include only aspects related to sanitary and safety issues, and those which focus on consumer perception of food quality cover conventional outlets such as bars and restaurants. There are few ones performed as in this study that analyze street food consumer behavior regarding his/her perception of quality, cleanliness, care received, among others

The relationship between Innovation and Global Competitiveness: The mediating role of Management Practices evaluated by Structural Equation Modeling

    Get PDF
Purpose – This study seeks to investigate whether a good management environment in companies determines results in terms of country competitiveness. Additionally, it aims to verify if innovation plays a role in contributing to this. Design/methodology/approach – The study used structural equation modeling and data on 138 countries contemplated in The Global Competitiveness Report 2016/2017 (2016 World Economic Forum). A number of theories have been used to relate competitiveness to innovation and to management practices. This discussion was expanded, taking these variables into account in a more comprehensive framework. Findings – The analysis performed indicates the role of best management practices as a mediator in the relationship that exists between innovation and global competitiveness, which reinforces the importance of a good level of management Originality/Value- There have been many studies and discussions about global competitiveness. The factors in the literature used to explain a country´s degree of competitiveness include cheap labor, abundant raw materials, the amount of capital available for investment, and, especially, the capacity to innovate. Some authors point to a fifth factor: best management practices. The paper shows how this factor improves competitiveness. The most important contribution of this study is to demonstrate that innovation alone cannot by itself ensure competitiveness in companies or nations, and requires the simultaneous presence of best management practices

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyze patterns and trends of articles that present the use of structural equation modeling (SEM) and that were published in several Brazilian journals. In addition, this paper maps the institutions where the authors of the identified articles are affiliated, and discusses aspects of searching the articles in journals’ archives and other scientific databases. Design/methodology/approach – The work used bibliometrics, which is one of the forms of evaluation and measurement of information flows in scientific knowledge, using mathematical and statistical methods. Findings – The study showed an exponential growth in using SEM in several areas in recent years, with predominance in marketing. Most of the publications were produced by authors from institutions such as USP, FGV and UFRGS, but most authors published only one article using SEM. Almost all published articles used one of the three most common software, especially AMOS®. Surprisingly, many articles did not mention the software used, indicating methodological flaw. Practical implications – Weaknesses were found regarding the search for articles in the different sources used, indicating that, for literature reviews, the research should be conducted in several databases in a complementary way and not alternatively. This fact becomes critical especially when expressions in languages other than Portuguese were used. This situation suggests an aggravating lack of visibility for the Brazilian scientific community since the articles are less likely to be found. Originality/value – The paper shows that among the various techniques of multivariate data analysis used in the field of administration, SEM has gained prominence being operationalized using specific software

It has been little explored in Brazil studies on the theme of social identity in organizations and their effect on the extrarole behavior of employees. On the other hand, researches reveal the influence of economic outcomes and procedural justice as influencers of this type of behavior. A study conducted in the United States found the mediation of the variable social identity among these elements. From this study, it was carried out research in Brazilian companies using structural equation modeling technique (SEM), such results, unlike the American work, indicated that the effect of economic outcomes and procedural justice on the extrarole behavior is verified only through the mediation of social identity. About a managerial point of view, these results provide a significant contribution to reinforce the importance of the social identity as influencer on the extrarole behavior of employees.Departamento de Ciências Exatas e da Terra da Universidade Federal de São Paulo - UNIFESP - Diadema - BrasilPós-Graduação Lato Sensu da Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie - São Paulo, BrasilDepartamento de Administração do Centro Universitário da FEI - Sao Bernardo do Campo, SP, BrazilDepartamento de Ciências Exatas e da Terra da Universidade Federal de São Paulo - UNIFESP - Diadema - BrasilWeb of Scienc

Does ecological sustainability really matter? Evaluation of its mediating role in the relationship between innovation and competitiveness

    No full text
Organizational studies highlight the role of innovation for competitiveness, but few of them address ecological sustainability as one of the variables in this relationship. The traditional model only considers economic growth to be anchored in the dimension of innovation, disregarding the environment. Thus, the purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of ecological sustainability on the relationship between innovation and global competitiveness. To reach the goal of the manuscript, a database was used that included indicators from 119 countries present in the Global Competitiveness Report of WEF and the Global Innovation Index. The data were treated using regression analysis with mediation techniques. The results suggest significant mediation of ecological sustainability in the relationship between innovation and global competitiveness. This work shows the importance of ecological sustainability to increase country’s innovative activity and consequently its competitiveness. Additionally, it draws attention to the gap in studies that present these relationships at the country level. In terms of practical contributions, the findings support the recommendation for companies to focus on actions to environmental and innovation management improving sustainability and increasing organizational performance and long-term survival. Finally, this research also draws attention to the lack of an important indicator of ecological sustainability in a report addressing countries’ competitiveness

The interdependence between ease of doing business, innovation, and competitiveness of nations

    No full text
This study aims to assess whether the ease of doing business can be considered as an alternative path (indirect path) between innovation and competitiveness of nations, improving the understanding of the effect transfer between these two variables. The study used exploratory/confirmatory factor analysis and mediation techniques applied to data from 141 countries contemplated in The Global Competitiveness report 2019 by the WEF and Doing Business report 2019 by the World Bank. The results show the mediator role of ease of doing business in the relationship between innovation and global competitiveness. Innovation improves the competitiveness of nations, but rules and regulations can be a barrier to this relationship. Therefore, ease of doing business is an essential element in improving the relationship between innovation and competitiveness, helping policymakers to focus their efforts on ease of doing business aspects in such a way as to enhance the economic process and support investors to make the most appropriate decisions when choosing the countries in which to invest their resources. Complementarily, the study also contributes by pointing out that the current method of calculating the EDB index may not be the most suitable, since it can distort analysis affecting international investment feasibility studie
