Ecologies of Death, Ecologies of Mourning: A Biophilosophy of Non/Living Arts

    Get PDF
In the present condition of planetary environmental crises, violence, and war, entire ecosystems are annihilated, habitats turn into unliveable spaces, and shared “more-than-human” vulnerabilities get amplified. Here and now, death and loss become urgent environmental concerns, while the Anthropocene-induced anxiety, anger, and grief are manifested in popular-scientific narratives, art, culture, and activism. Grounded in the theoretical framework of queer death studies, this article explores present grief imaginaries and engagements with more-than-human death, dying, and extinction, as they are interwoven through contemporary art. It is there where an ecological ontology of death is being exposed and ethical territories of eco-grief unfold

Deterritorialising Death : Queerfeminist Biophilosophy and Ecologies of the Non/Living in Contemporary Art

In the contemporary context of environmental crises and the degradation of resources, certain habitats become unliveable, leading to the death of individuals and species extinction. Whilst bioscience emphasises interdependency and relationality as crucial characteristics of life shared by all organisms, Western cultural imaginaries tend to draw a thick dividing line between humans and nonhumans, particularly evident in the context of death. On the one hand, death appears as a process common to all forms of life; on the other, as an event that distinguishes human from other organisms. Against this background, this article explores how contemporary art-in particular, the series of worksThe Absence of Alice(2008-2011) by Australian new-media and bioartist Svenja Kratz-challenges the normative and human-exceptionalist concept of death. By employingqueerfeminist biophilosophyas a strategy that focuses on relations, processes and transformations instead of 'essences', the article examines the ways Kratz's worksdeterritorialisethe conventional concept of death. In this way, it hopes to attend to the intimacies between materialities of a human and nonhuman kind that form part of the processes of death and dying, and what follows, to reframe ethico-ontology of death as material and processual ecologies of the non/living.Peer reviewe

The role of green space was considered in the paper. The basic negative impacts on the quantity and quality of green spaces were defined. It was set that the optimization of green areas exploitation is main prerequisite of the urban environment improvement which requires their comprehensive study, assessment of natural resource potential and its possible changes, study of the approaches to their use without damage to nature and people to be. The implementation of proposed recommendations within geoecological approach allows to detect complex structural and functional properties of green spaces geosystem as natural objects and finding ways for their improvement.

Purpose: This paper is aimed at investigating the research trends about ambidexterity blended with creativity and checking whether networking could be one of the approaches making that perspective more comprehensive. Approach/Methodology/Design: Almost every industry, characterized by particular specifics provides different managerial pressures. Those tensions are the drivers of changing managerial cognition aimed at finding the balance between improving the organizational performance and value creating. Based on the literature review and database search using PRISMA protocol, we proposed integrating ambidexterity, creativity and networking in one research perspective. Findings: A detailed analysis revealed three main research areas that are discussed so far - the development of dyadic ties of individuals, multitasking approach and the evolution of social networks linking individuals. Practical Implications: There are different managerial dilemmas which are rooted in the tensions observed. Holistic perspective that is applied in this study includes managing ambidexterity to develop specific organizational abilities driven by creativity. Providing an integrative perspective where the networking is also included, would allow to find the managerial solutions to some of the paradoxes reported. Originality/Value: Although there are many research results that confirm the necessity of enhancing the level of creativeness in organizations, we proposed including the networking perspective as one of the approaches that would allow to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to build the creative potential. As a result the perspective proposed would allow to deal with the paradoxes identifies and enhance the level of ambidexterity.peer-reviewe
