    Jejunal microvilli atrophy and reduced nutrient transport in rats with advanced liver cirrhosis: improvement by Insulin-like Growth Factor I

    BACKGROUND: Previous results have shown that in rats with non-ascitic cirrhosis there is an altered transport of sugars and amino acids associated with elongated microvilli. These alterations returned to normal with the administration of Insulin-Like Growth Factor-I (IGF-I). The aims of this study were to explore the evolution of these alterations and analyse the effect of IGF-I in rats with advanced cirrhosis and ascites. Thus, jejunal structure and nutrient transport (D-galactose, L-leucine, L-proline, L-glutamic acid and L-cystine) were studied in rats with ascitic cirrhosis. METHODS: Advanced cirrhosis was induced by CCl(4 )inhalation and Phenobarbital administration for 30 weeks. Cirrhotic animals were divided into two groups which received IGF-I or saline during two weeks. Control group was studied in parallel. Jejunal microvilli were studied by electron microscopy. Nutrient transport was assessed in brush border membrane vesicles using (14)C or (35)S-labelled subtracts in the three experimental groups. RESULTS: Intestinal active Na(+)-dependent transport was significantly reduced in untreated cirrhotic rats. Kinetic studies showed a decreased V(max )and a reduced affinity for sugar and four amino acids transporters (expressed as an increased K(t)) in the brush border membrane vesicles from untreated cirrhotic rats as compared with controls. Both parameters were normalised in the IGF-I-treated cirrhotic group. Electron microscopy showed elongation and fusion of microvilli with degenerative membrane lesions and/or notable atrophy. CONCLUSIONS: The initial microvilli elongation reported in non ascitic cirrhosis develops into atrophy in rats with advanced cirrhosis and nutrient transports (monosaccharides and amino acids) are progressively reduced. Both morphological and functional alterations improved significantly with low doses of IGF-I

    British press attitudes towards the EU's global presence:from the Russian-Georgian War to the 2009 Copenhagen Summit

    This article surveys the way in which British print media have presented the European Union (EU)'s global presence in the international arena by analysing two case studies which reflect two very distinctive areas of EU foreign policy: global climate change policy and the policy towards Russia. It employs frame analysis, allowing for the identification of the way in which the discourse of the press was categorized around a series of central opinions and ideas. Frames underscore the connections made by journalists between different events, policies or phenomena and their possible interpretations. The analysis highlights that acting through the common framework of the EU rather than unilaterally was a strategy preferred by the British press. These findings are in stark contrast with the deep Euroscepticism which characterizes press attitudes towards most policy areas, and is often considered to be rooted in the British political culture, media system, public opinion or the longstanding tradition of viewing the European continent as the other

    The Impact of Phase Equilibrium Cloud Models on GCM Simulations of GJ1214b

    This is the author accepted manuscript.Weinvestigate the impact of clouds on the atmosphere of GJ1214busingtheradiatively-coupled, phase-equilibrium cloud model EddySed coupled to the Unified Model general circulation model. We find that, consistent with previous investigations, high metallicity (100× solar) and clouds with large vertical extents (a sedimentation factor of sed = 0.1) are required to best match the observations, although metallicities even higher than those investigated here may be required to improve agreement further. Weadditionally find that in our case which best matches the observations (sed = 0.1), the velocity structures change relative to the clear sky case with the formation of a superrotating jet being suppressed. The increase in cloud extent with sed results in a cooler planet due to a higher albedo, causing the atmosphere to contract. This also results in a reduced day-night contrast seen in the phase curves, although the introduction of cloud still results in a reduction of the phase offset. We additionally investigate the impact the the Unified Model’s pseudo-spherical irradiation scheme on the calculation of heating rates, finding that the introduction of nightside shortwave heating results in slower mid-latitude jets compared to the plane parallel irradiation scheme used in previous works. We also consider the impact of a gamma distribution, as opposed to a log-normal distribution, for the distribution of cloud particle radii and find the impact to be relatively minor.Leverhulme TrustScience and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)UKR
