Impacts of necrotising disease on the Endangered cauliflower soft coral (Dendronephthya australis)
Context. Diseases have affected coral populations worldwide, leading to population declines and requiring active restoration efforts. Aims. Describe population and individual impacts of necrotising disease in the Endangered octocoral Dendronephthya australis. Methods. We quantified population loss and recruitment by using reference photos, survey and GPS mapping and described disease lesions by using histopathology. Key results. From December 2019 to January 2020, we observed polyp loss, necrotic lesions and loss of large colonies of D. australis at Botany Bay, New South Wales, Australia. By September 2020, only a few scattered recruits remained, and all large colonies were lost. Histopathology of colonies sampled in January 2020 confirmed that the disease had resulted in necrosis, gastrovascular canal collapse and internal colony integrity loss, leading to mortality. New recruits were recorded within 10 months of disease onset, and large colonies within 18 months. Conclusions. Although the necrotising disease had significant impacts on both the individual and population level, natural recruitment began quickly. As such, unlike in other populations, restoration is not currently required in the Bare Island D. australis population. Implications. The extent of disease impact at the individual and population levels suggests that monitoring for lesions should be undertaken before developing conservation and restoration strategies for this species
The airtightness and air leakage characteristics of new UK holiday homes
It is estimated that in the UK, 200,000 residents live in park and holiday homes all year round, the majority of which are elderly and on low incomes. As these homes are often thermally inefficient and leaky, these residents are some of the most susceptible in society to fuel poverty. Despite this, there is a dearth of empirical data available on the in situ fabric performance of these homes. This paper presents the results obtained from undertaking a series of pressurisation tests and leakage identification on new build holiday homes. While the sample size reported is small, the results indicate almost a factor of two variation in the airtightness performance of the homes. In spite of this, all of the homes achieved an air permeability significantly lower than the default value incorporated within the industry standard Energy Efficiency Rating Calculator, suggesting that a much lower figure may be more appropriate. The results also suggest that the use of the air permeability metric within the Calculator potentially biases the performance of holiday homes due to their particular form factor, and that this bias could be mitigated against by adopting the air leakage metric within any future revisions to the Calculator
CLEAR-AI: empowering people living with dementia and their carers to understand and reduce distress
People living with dementia sometimes present with behaviours that carers find difficult to understand and manage. These include aggression, pacing, vocalising, exit-seeking and sexually inappropriate behaviour. They can be present in up to 70% of people living with dementia and often present because of misunderstanding or because of the distress the person experiences trying to cope with the daily challenges of living with their illness. These behaviours increase the risk that a person will move from their home to a care home. CLEAR Dementia Care© helps carers to understand behaviour in the context of the person and their environment, identify unmet needs and respond in ways to reduce distress. We present the pilot of “CLEAR-AI”, an artificial intelligence (AI) powered platform that interprets data from a range of connected smart sensors, apps and devices to model the person with dementia’s daily routines. Analysis of the data and training the AI model enables the platform to identify the triggers that precede distress episodes and to recognise when episodes occur in the context of previous activities in the day. Using these models, and with CLEAR’s assessment as baseline, we can initiate interventions into daily schedules that reduce or mitigate distress where it is likely to arise. The goal is to reduce carer burden and enable the person to live at home with as much independence as possible for as long as possible. Our consortium brings together people living with dementia and their carers, commissioners of digital social care, specialists in dementia care, AI and digital solutions. The co-design approach ensures that we are led by stakeholders’ needs to improve quality of life
Assessing the Health of Richibucto Estuary with the Latent Health Factor Index
The ability to quantitatively assess the health of an ecosystem is often of
great interest to those tasked with monitoring and conserving ecosystems. For
decades, research in this area has relied upon multimetric indices of various
forms. Although indices may be numbers, many are constructed based on
procedures that are highly qualitative in nature, thus limiting the
quantitative rigour of the practical interpretations made from these indices.
The statistical modelling approach to construct the latent health factor index
(LHFI) was recently developed to express ecological data, collected to
construct conventional multimetric health indices, in a rigorous quantitative
model that integrates qualitative features of ecosystem health and preconceived
ecological relationships among such features. This hierarchical modelling
approach allows (a) statistical inference of health for observed sites and (b)
prediction of health for unobserved sites, all accompanied by formal
uncertainty statements. Thus far, the LHFI approach has been demonstrated and
validated on freshwater ecosystems. The goal of this paper is to adapt this
approach to modelling estuarine ecosystem health, particularly that of the
previously unassessed system in Richibucto in New Brunswick, Canada. Field data
correspond to biotic health metrics that constitute the AZTI marine biotic
index (AMBI) and abiotic predictors preconceived to influence biota. We also
briefly discuss related LHFI research involving additional metrics that form
the infaunal trophic index (ITI). Our paper is the first to construct a
scientifically sensible model to rigorously identify the collective explanatory
capacity of salinity, distance downstream, channel depth, and silt-clay content
--- all regarded a priori as qualitatively important abiotic drivers ---

Interpol and the Emergence of Global Policing
This chapter examines global policing as it takes shape through the work of Interpol, the International Criminal Police Organization. Global policing emerges in the legal, political and technological amalgam through which transnational police cooperation is carried out, and includes the police practices inflected and made possible by this phenomenon. Interpol’s role is predominantly in the circulation of information, through which it enters into relationships and provides services that affect aspects of governance, from the local to national, regional and global. The chapter describes this assemblage as a noteworthy experiment in developing what McKeon called a frame for common action. Drawing on Interpol publications, news stories, interviews with staff, and fieldwork at the General Secretariat in Lyon, France, the history, institutional structure, and daily practices are described. Three cases are analyzed, concerning Red Notices, national sovereignty, and terrorism, in order to explore some of the problems arising in Interpol’s political and technical operating arrangements. In conclusion, international and global policing are compared schematically, together with Interpol’s attempts to give institutional and procedural direction to the still-evolving form of global policing

A demonstration of 'broken' visual space
It has long been assumed that there is a distorted mapping between real and ‘perceived’ space, based on demonstrations of systematic errors in judgements of slant, curvature, direction and separation. Here, we have applied a direct test to the notion of a coherent visual space. In an immersive virtual environment, participants judged the relative distance of two squares displayed in separate intervals. On some trials, the virtual scene expanded by a factor of four between intervals although, in line with recent results, participants did not report any noticeable change in the scene. We found that there was no consistent depth ordering of objects that can explain the distance matches participants made in this environment (e.g. A > B > D yet also A < C < D) and hence no single one-to-one mapping between participants’ perceived space and any real 3D environment. Instead, factors that affect pairwise comparisons of distances dictate participants’ performance. These data contradict, more directly than previous experiments, the idea that the visual system builds and uses a coherent 3D internal representation of a scene
Unintended Consequences of Incentive Provision for Behaviour Change and Maintenance around Childbirth
Financial (positive or negative) and non-financial incentives or rewards are increasingly used in attempts to influence health behaviours. While unintended consequences of incentive provision are discussed in the literature, evidence syntheses did not identify any primary research with the aim of investigating unintended consequences of incentive interventions for lifestyle behaviour change. Our objective was to investigate perceived positive and negative unintended consequences of incentive provision for a shortlist of seven promising incentive strategies for smoking cessation in pregnancy and breastfeeding. A multi-disciplinary, mixed-methods approach included involving two service-user mother and baby groups from disadvantaged areas with experience of the target behaviours as study co-investigators. Systematic reviews informed the shortlist of incentive strategies. Qualitative semi-structured interviews and a web-based survey of health professionals asked open questions on positive and negative consequences of incentives. The participants from three UK regions were a diverse sample with and without direct experience of incentive interventions: 88 pregnant women/recent mothers/partners/family members; 53 service providers; 24 experts/decision makers and interactive discussions with 63 conference attendees. Maternity and early years health professionals (n = 497) including doctors, midwives, health visitors, public health and related staff participated in the survey. Qualitative analysis identified ethical, political, cultural, social and psychological implications of incentive delivery at population and individual levels. Four key themes emerged: how incentives can address or create inequalities; enhance or diminish intrinsic motivation and wellbeing; have a positive or negative effect on relationships with others within personal networks or health providers; and can impact on health systems and resources by raising awareness and directing service delivery, but may be detrimental to other health care areas. Financial incentives are controversial and generated emotive and oppositional responses. The planning, design and delivery of future incentive interventions should evaluate unexpected consequences to inform the evidence for effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and future implementation
Apoptosis at Inflection Point in Liquid Culture of Budding Yeasts
Budding yeasts are highly suitable for aging studies, because the number of bud
scars (stage) proportionally correlates with age. Its maximum stages are known
to reach at 20–30 stages on an isolated agar medium. However, their stage
dynamics in a liquid culture is virtually unknown. We investigate the population
dynamics by counting scars in each cell. Here one cell division produces one new
cell and one bud scar. This simple rule leads to a conservation law: “The
total number of bud scars is equal to the total number of cells.” We find
a large discrepancy: extremely fewer cells with over 5 scars than expected.
Almost all cells with 6 or more scars disappear within a short period of time in
the late log phase (corresponds to the inflection point). This discrepancy is
confirmed directly by the microscopic observations of broken cells. This finding
implies apoptosis in older cells (6 scars or more)
Eosinophils Are Important for Protection, Immunoregulation and Pathology during Infection with Nematode Microfilariae
Eosinophil responses typify both allergic and parasitic helminth disease. In helminthic disease, the role of eosinophils can be both protective in immune responses and destructive in pathological responses. To investigate whether eosinophils are involved in both protection and pathology during filarial nematode infection, we explored the role of eosinophils and their granule proteins, eosinophil peroxidase (EPO) and major basic protein-1 (MBP-1), during infection with Brugia malayi microfilariae. Using eosinophil-deficient mice (PHIL), we further clarify the role of eosinophils in clearance of microfilariae during primary, but not challenge infection in vivo. Deletion of EPO or MBP-1 alone was insufficient to abrogate parasite clearance suggesting that either these molecules are redundant or eosinophils act indirectly in parasite clearance via augmentation of other protective responses. Absence of eosinophils increased mast cell recruitment, but not other cell types, into the broncho-alveolar lavage fluid during challenge infection. In addition absence of eosinophils or EPO alone, augmented parasite-induced IgE responses, as measured by ELISA, demonstrating that eosinophils are involved in regulation of IgE. Whole body plethysmography indicated that nematode-induced changes in airway physiology were reduced in challenge infection in the absence of eosinophils and also during primary infection in the absence of EPO alone. However lack of eosinophils or MBP-1 actually increased goblet cell mucus production. We did not find any major differences in cytokine responses in the absence of eosinophils, EPO or MBP-1. These results reveal that eosinophils actively participate in regulation of IgE and goblet cell mucus production via granule secretion during nematode-induced pathology and highlight their importance both as effector cells, as damage-inducing cells and as supervisory cells that shape both innate and adaptive immunity
