Mechanical characterization and comparison of different NiTi/silicone rubber interfaces
International audienceThis paper investigates the effects of different surface treatments on the mechanical resistance of interface between wires of NiTi shape memory alloy and silicone rubber. Three different treatments were used; primer, plasma and combination of both. The wires deoxidation effects have also been studied. In order to characterize the interface properties in such composite material, pull-out tests were carried out by means of a home-made device. This test allows us to evaluate the mechanical resistance of the interface in terms of the maximum force reached during the test. First, results show that the debonding force is not higher after the wires deoxidation. This preparation is therefore not necessary. Second, using a primer PM820 and plasma separately leads to a significant improvment of the mechanical resistance. Third, the combination of these treatments (primer followed by plasma) and a longer time of exposure to the plasma alone get the debonding force higher. Consequently, NiTi/silicone rubber interface improved only by means of plasma offers a new way to obtain biocompatible interfaces in such composite material
Cosmic microwave background anisotropies in multi-connected flat spaces
This article investigates the signature of the seventeen multi-connected flat
spaces in cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps. For each such space it
recalls a fundamental domain and a set of generating matrices, and then goes on
to find an orthonormal basis for the set of eigenmodes of the Laplace operator
on that space. The basis eigenmodes are expressed as linear combinations of
eigenmodes of the simply connected Euclidean space. A preceding work, which
provides a general method for implementing multi-connected topologies in
standard CMB codes, is then applied to simulate CMB maps and angular power
spectra for each space. Unlike in the 3-torus, the results in most
multi-connected flat spaces depend on the location of the observer. This effect
is discussed in detail. In particular, it is shown that the correlated circles
on a CMB map are generically not back-to-back, so that negative search of
back-to-back circles in the WMAP data does not exclude a vast majority of flat

Simulating Cosmic Microwave Background maps in multi-connected spaces
This article describes the computation of cosmic microwave background
anisotropies in a universe with multi-connected spatial sections and focuses on
the implementation of the topology in standard CMB computer codes. The key
ingredient is the computation of the eigenmodes of the Laplacian with boundary
conditions compatible with multi-connected space topology. The correlators of
the coefficients of the decomposition of the temperature fluctuation in
spherical harmonics are computed and examples are given for spatially flat
spaces and one family of spherical spaces, namely the lens spaces. Under the
hypothesis of Gaussian initial conditions, these correlators encode all the

Low Immune Response to Hepatitis B Vaccine among Children in Dakar, Senegal
HBV vaccine was introduced into the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) in Senegal and Cameroon in 2005. We conducted a cross-sectional study in both countries to assess the HBV immune protection among children. All consecutive children under 4 years old, hospitalized for any reason between May 2009 and May 2010, with an immunisation card and a complete HBV vaccination, were tested for anti-HBs and anti-HBc. A total of 242 anti-HBc-negative children (128 in Cameroon and 114 in Senegal) were considered in the analysis. The prevalence of children with anti-HBs ≥10 IU/L was higher in Cameroon with 92% (95% CI: 87%–97%) compared to Senegal with 58% (95% CI: 49%–67%), (p<0.001). The response to vaccination in Senegal was lower in 2006–2007 (43%) than in 2008–2009 (65%), (p = 0.028). Our results, although not based on a representative sample of Senegalese or Cameroonian child populations, reveal a significant problem in vaccine response in Senegal. This response problem extends well beyond hepatitis B: the same children who have not developed an immune response to the HBV vaccine are also at risk for diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (DTwP) and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome associated with COVID-19: An Emulated Target Trial Analysis.
RATIONALE: Whether COVID patients may benefit from extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) compared with conventional invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) remains unknown. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the effect of ECMO on 90-Day mortality vs IMV only Methods: Among 4,244 critically ill adult patients with COVID-19 included in a multicenter cohort study, we emulated a target trial comparing the treatment strategies of initiating ECMO vs. no ECMO within 7 days of IMV in patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (PaO2/FiO2 <80 or PaCO2 ≥60 mmHg). We controlled for confounding using a multivariable Cox model based on predefined variables. MAIN RESULTS: 1,235 patients met the full eligibility criteria for the emulated trial, among whom 164 patients initiated ECMO. The ECMO strategy had a higher survival probability at Day-7 from the onset of eligibility criteria (87% vs 83%, risk difference: 4%, 95% CI 0;9%) which decreased during follow-up (survival at Day-90: 63% vs 65%, risk difference: -2%, 95% CI -10;5%). However, ECMO was associated with higher survival when performed in high-volume ECMO centers or in regions where a specific ECMO network organization was set up to handle high demand, and when initiated within the first 4 days of MV and in profoundly hypoxemic patients. CONCLUSIONS: In an emulated trial based on a nationwide COVID-19 cohort, we found differential survival over time of an ECMO compared with a no-ECMO strategy. However, ECMO was consistently associated with better outcomes when performed in high-volume centers and in regions with ECMO capacities specifically organized to handle high demand. Durable resistance or efficient disease control? Adult Plant Resistance (APR) at the heart of the dilemma
Adult plant resistance (APR) is an incomplete and delayed protection of plants against pathogens. At first glance, such resistance should be less efficient than classical major-effect resistance genes, which confer complete resistance from seedling stage, to reduce epidemics. However, by allowing some ‘leaky’ levels of disease, APR genes are predicted to be more durable than major genes because they exert a softer selection pressure on pathogens towards adaptation to resistance. However, the impact of partial efficiency and delayed mode of action of APR on the evolutionary and epidemiological outcomes of resistance deployment has never been tested.Using the demogenetic, spatially explicit, temporal, stochastic model landsepi, this study is a first attempt to investigate how resistance efficiency, time to resistance expression and target pathogenicity trait jointly impact resistance durability and disease control at the landscape scale. Our numerical experiments explore the deployment of APR in a simulated agricultural landscape, alone or together with a major resistance gene. As a case study, the mathematical model has been parameterised for rust fungi (genus Puccinia) of cereal crops, for which extensive data are available.Our simulations confirm that weak efficiency and delayed expression of APR genes reduce the selection pressure applied on pathogens and their propensity to overcome resistance, but do not confer effective protection. On the other hand, stronger APR genes (which increase selection pressure on the pathogen) may be quickly overcome but have the potential to provide some disease protection in the short-term. This is attributed to strong competition between different pathogen genotypes and the presence of fitness costs of adaptation, especially when APR genes are deployed together with major resistance gene via crop mixtures or rotations
