Electronic structure and magnetic properties of RMnX (R= Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Y; X= Si, Ge) studied by KKR method
Electronic structure calculations, using the charge and spin self-consistent
Korringa- Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) method, have been performed for several Mn
compounds ( = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Y; = Si, Ge) of the CeFeSi-type structure.
The origin of their magnetic properties has been investigated emphasizing the
role of the Mn sublattice. The significant influence of the Mn-Mn and Mn-
interatomic distances on the Mn magnetic moment value is delineated from our
computations, supporting many neutron diffraction data. We show that the marked
change of with the Mn-Mn and Mn- distances resulted from a
redistribution between spin-up and spin-down -Mn DOS rather than from
different fillings of the Mn 3-shell. Bearing in mind that the neutron
diffraction data reported for the Mn compounds are rather scattered, the
KKR computations of are in fair agreement with the experimental
values. Comparing density of states near obtained in different magnetic
orderings, one can notice that the entitled Mn systems seem to 'adapt'
their magnetic structures to minimize the DOS in the vicinity of the Fermi
level. Noteworthy, the SrMnGe antiferromagnet exhibits a pseudo-gap behaviour
at , suggesting anomalous electron transport properties. In addition,
the F-AF transition occurring in the disordered LaYMnSi alloy for
the range is well supported by the DOS features of
LaYMnSi. In contrast to the investigated Mn compounds,
YFeSi was found to be non-magnetic, which is in excellent agreement with the

Perturbative quantum gravity with the Immirzi parameter
We study perturbative quantum gravity in the first-order tetrad formalism.
The lowest order action corresponds to Einstein-Cartan plus a parity-odd term,
and is known in the literature as the Holst action. The coupling constant of
the parity-odd term can be identified with the Immirzi parameter of loop
quantum gravity. We compute the quantum effective action in the one-loop
expansion. As in the metric second-order formulation, we find that in the case
of pure gravity the theory is on-shell finite, and the running of Newton's
constant and the Immirzi parameter is inessential. In the presence of fermions,
the situation changes in two fundamental aspects. First, non-renormalizable
logarithmic divergences appear, as usual. Second, the Immirzi parameter becomes
a priori observable, and we find that it is renormalized by a four-fermion
interaction generated by radiative corrections. We compute its beta function
and discuss possible implications. The sign of the beta function depends on
whether the Immirzi parameter is larger or smaller than one in absolute value,
and the values plus or minus one are UV fixed-points (we work in Euclidean
signature). Finally, we find that the Holst action is stable with respect to
radiative corrections in the case of minimal coupling, up to higher order
non-renormalizable interactions.Comment: v2 minor amendment
HIV Drug Resistance (HIVDR) in Antiretroviral Therapy-Naïve Patients in Tanzania Not Eligible for WHO Threshold HIVDR Survey Is Dramatically High
The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended guidelines for a HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) survey for resource-limited countries. Eligibility criteria for patients include age below 25 years in order to focus on the prevalence of transmitted HIVDR (tHIVDR) in newly-infected individuals. Most of the participating sites across Africa have so far reported tHIVDR prevalences of below 5%. In this study we investigated whether the rate of HIVDR in patients <25 years is representative for HIVDR in the rest of the therapy-naïve population. HIVDR was determined in 88 sequentially enrolled ART-naïve patients from Mwanza, Tanzania (mean age 35.4 years). Twenty patients were aged <25 years and 68 patients were aged 25-63 years. The frequency of HIVDR in the study population was 14.8% (95%; CI 0.072-0.223) and independent of NVP-resistance induced by prevention of mother-to-child transmission programs. Patients >25 years had a significantly higher HIVDR frequency than younger patients (19.1%; 95% CI 0.095-0.28) versus 0%, P = 0.0344). In 2 out of the 16 patients with HIVDR we found traces of antiretrovirals (ARVs) in plasma. ART-naïve patients aged over 25 years exhibited significantly higher HIVDR than younger patients. Detection of traces of ARVs in individuals with HIVDR suggests that besides transmission, undisclosed misuse of ARVs may constitute a significant factor in the generation of the observed high HIVDR rate. The current WHO tHIVDR survey that is solely focused on the transmission of HIVDR and that excludes patients over 25 years of age may therefore result in substantial underestimation of the prevalence of HIVDR in the therapy-naïve population. Similar studies should be performed also in other areas to test whether the so far reported optimistic picture of low HIVDR prevalence in young individuals is really representative for the rest of the ART-naïve HIV-infected population

Methane drizzle on Titan
Saturn's moon Titan shows landscapes with fluvial features(1) suggestive of hydrology based on liquid methane. Recent efforts in understanding Titan's methane hydrological cycle have focused on occasional cloud outbursts near the south pole(2-4) or cloud streaks at southern mid-latitudes(5,6) and the mechanisms of their formation. It is not known, however, if the clouds produce rain or if there are also non-convective clouds, as predicted by several models(7-11). Here we show that the in situ data on the methane concentration and temperature profile in Titan's troposphere point to the presence of layered optically thin stratiform clouds. The data indicate an upper methane ice cloud and a lower, barely visible, liquid methane-nitrogen cloud, with a gap in between. The lower, liquid, cloud produces drizzle that reaches the surface. These non-convective methane clouds are quasi-permanent features supported by the global atmospheric circulation, indicating that methane precipitation occurs wherever there is slow upward motion. This drizzle is a persistent component of Titan's methane hydrological cycle and, by wetting the surface on a global scale, plays an active role in the surface geology of Titan.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/62668/1/nature04948.pd
High-levels of acquired drug resistance in adult patients failing first-line antiretroviral therapy in a rural HIV treatment programme in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency and patterns of acquired antiretroviral drug resistance in a rural primary health care programme in South Africa. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study nested within HIV treatment programme. METHODS: Adult (≥ 18 years) HIV-infected individuals initially treated with a first-line stavudine- or zidovudine-based antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimen and with evidence of virological failure (one viral load >1000 copies/ml) were enrolled from 17 rural primary health care clinics. Genotypic resistance testing was performed using the in-house SATuRN/Life Technologies system. Sequences were analysed and genotypic susceptibility scores (GSS) for standard second-line regimens were calculated using the Stanford HIVDB 6.0.5 algorithms. RESULTS: A total of 222 adults were successfully genotyped for HIV drug resistance between December 2010 and March 2012. The most common regimens at time of genotype were stavudine, lamivudine and efavirenz (51%); and stavudine, lamivudine and nevirapine (24%). Median duration of ART was 42 months (interquartile range (IQR) 32-53) and median duration of antiretroviral failure was 27 months (IQR 17-40). One hundred and ninety one (86%) had at least one drug resistance mutation. For 34 individuals (15%), the GSS for the standard second-line regimen was <2, suggesting a significantly compromised regimen. In univariate analysis, individuals with a prior nucleoside reverse-transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) substitution were more likely to have a GSS <2 than those on the same NRTIs throughout (odds ratio (OR) 5.70, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.60-12.49). CONCLUSIONS: There are high levels of drug resistance in adults with failure of first-line antiretroviral therapy in this rural primary health care programme. Presence of occult HBV, but near absence of active HBV and HCV infections in people infected with HIV in rural South Africa
Barriers to the care of HIV-infected children in rural Zambia: a cross-sectional analysis
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Successful antiretroviral treatment programs in rural sub-Saharan Africa may face different challenges than programs in urban areas. The objective of this study was to identify patient characteristics, barriers to care, and treatment responses of HIV-infected children seeking care in rural Zambia.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Cross-sectional analysis of HIV-infected children seeking care at Macha Hospital in rural southern Zambia. Information was collected from caretakers and medical records.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>192 HIV-infected children were enrolled from September 2007 through September 2008, 28% of whom were receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) at enrollment. The median age was 3.3 years for children not receiving ART (IQR 1.8, 6.7) and 4.5 years for children receiving ART (IQR 2.7, 8.6). 91% travelled more than one hour to the clinic and 26% travelled more than 5 hours. Most participants (73%) reported difficulties accessing the clinic, including insufficient money (60%), lack of transportation (54%) and roads in poor condition (32%). The 54 children who were receiving ART at study enrollment had been on ART a median of 8.6 months (IQR: 2.7, 19.5). The median percentage of CD4<sup>+ </sup>T cells was 12.4 (IQR: 9.2, 18.6) at the start of ART, and increased to 28.6 (IQR: 23.5, 36.1) at the initial study visit. However, the proportion of children who were underweight decreased only slightly, from 70% at initiation of ART to 61% at the initial study visit.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>HIV-infected children in rural southern Zambia have long travel times to access care and may have poorer weight gain on ART than children in urban areas. Despite these barriers, these children had a substantial rise in CD4<sup>+ </sup>T cell counts in the first year of ART although longer follow-up may indicate these gains are not sustained.</p
A review of elliptical and disc galaxy structure, and modern scaling laws
A century ago, in 1911 and 1913, Plummer and then Reynolds introduced their
models to describe the radial distribution of stars in `nebulae'. This article
reviews the progress since then, providing both an historical perspective and a
contemporary review of the stellar structure of bulges, discs and elliptical
galaxies. The quantification of galaxy nuclei, such as central mass deficits
and excess nuclear light, plus the structure of dark matter halos and cD galaxy
envelopes, are discussed. Issues pertaining to spiral galaxies including dust,
bulge-to-disc ratios, bulgeless galaxies, bars and the identification of
pseudobulges are also reviewed. An array of modern scaling relations involving
sizes, luminosities, surface brightnesses and stellar concentrations are
presented, many of which are shown to be curved. These 'redshift zero'
relations not only quantify the behavior and nature of galaxies in the Universe
today, but are the modern benchmark for evolutionary studies of galaxies,
whether based on observations, N-body-simulations or semi-analytical modelling.
For example, it is shown that some of the recently discovered compact
elliptical galaxies at 1.5 < z < 2.5 may be the bulges of modern disc galaxies.Comment: Condensed version (due to Contract) of an invited review article to
