Measurement of Trilinear Gauge Couplings in e+ee^+ e^- Collisions at 161 GeV and 172 GeV

Trilinear gauge boson couplings are measured using data taken by DELPHI at 161~GeV and 172~GeV. Values for WWVWWV couplings (V=Z,γV=Z, \gamma) are determined from a study of the reactions \eeWW\ and \eeWev, using differential distributions from the WWWW final state in which one WW decays hadronically and the other leptonically, and total cross-section data from other channels. Limits are also derived on neutral ZVγZV\gamma couplings from an analysis of the reaction \eegi

A robust method for estimating gene expression states using Affymetrix microarray probe level data

Abstract

Background

Microarray technology is a high-throughput method for measuring the expression levels of thousand of genes simultaneously. The observed intensities combine a non-specific binding, which is a major disadvantage with microarray data. The Affymetrix GeneChip assigned a mismatch (MM) probe with the intention of measuring non-specific binding, but various opinions exist regarding usefulness of MM measures. It should be noted that not all observed intensities are associated with expressed genes and many of those are associated with unexpressed genes, of which measured values express mere noise due to non-specific binding, cross-hybridization, or stray signals. The implicit assumption that all genes are expressed leads to poor performance of microarray data analyses. We assume two functional states of a gene - expressed or unexpressed - and propose a robust method to estimate gene expression states using an order relationship between PM and MM measures.

Results

An indicator 'probability of a gene being expressed' was obtained using the number of probe pairs within a probe set where the PM measure exceeds the MM measure. We examined the validity of the proposed indicator using Human Genome U95 data sets provided by Affymetrix. The usefulness of 'probability of a gene being expressed' is illustrated through an exploration of candidate genes involved in neuroblastoma prognosis. We identified the candidate genes for which expression states differed (un-expressed or expressed) when compared between two outcomes. The validity of this result was subsequently confirmed by quantitative RT-PCR.

Conclusion

The proposed qualitative evaluation, 'probability of a gene being expressed', is a useful indicator for improving microarray data analysis. It is useful to reduce the number of false discoveries. Expression states - expressed or unexpressed - correspond to the most fundamental gene function 'On' and 'Off', which can lead to biologically meaningful results.</p

Os dados coletados foram analisados estatisticamente, com nível de signficância fixado em pBlood pressure (BP) oscillations in premature newborns are directly related to cerebral blood flow, but few studies assess the effects of standard physical therapy procedures on their BP. The aim of this study was to analyse the effects of respiratory physiotherapy and endotracheal suctioning on premature newborn BP during the first week of life. Forty-two preterm newborns with mean birth weight of 101.68±274.16 g, mean gestational age 29.58±2.16 weeks, and receiving mechanical ventilation were studied; they were mostly female (57.1%) and presented hyaline membrane disease (90.4%). BP measurements were carried out at three moments: before (A) and after physiotherapy (B), and after endotracheal suctioning (C). Data were statistically analysed and significance level set at p<0.05. Mean values found for systolic, diastolic, and (average) BP in mmHg were: moment A, 71.32 x 40.56 (53.04); moment B, 69.93 x 39.41 (51.98); and moment C, 74.29 x 43.75 (54.82). Newborn BP thus remained within physiological values both after physiotherapy procedures and suctioning, hence these may be said to be harmless; endotracheal suctioning had a higher influence on premature newborn BP oscillations
