    YBa2_2Cu3_3O7_7/La0.7_{0.7}Ca0.3_{0.3}MnO3_3 bilayers: Interface coupling and electric transport properties

    Heteroepitaxially grown bilayers of ferromagnetic La0.7_{0.7}Ca0.3_{0.3}MnO3_3 (LCMO) on top of superconducting YBa2_2Cu3_3O7_7 (YBCO) thin films were investigated by focusing on electric transport properties as well as on magnetism and orbital occupation at the interface. Transport measurements on YBCO single layers and on YBCO/LCMO bilayers, with different YBCO thickness dYd_Y and constant LCMO thickness dL=50d_L=50\,nm, show a significant reduction of the superconducting transition temperature TcT_c only for dY<10d_Y<10\,nm,with only a slightly stronger TcT_c suppression in the bilayers, as compared to the single layers. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements confirm recently published data of an induced magnetic moment on the interfacial Cu by the ferromagnetically ordered Mn ions, with antiparallel alignment between Cu and Mn moments. However, we observe a significantely larger Cu moment than previously reported, indicating stronger coupling between Cu and Mn at the interface. This in turn could result in an interface with lower transparency, and hence smaller spin diffusion length, that would explain our electric transport data, i.e.smaller TcT_c suppression. Moreover, linear dichroism measurements did not show any evidence for orbital reconstruction at the interface, indicating that a large change in orbital occupancies through hybridization is not necessary to induce a measurable ferromagnetic moment on the Cu atoms.Comment: 8 Figure

    Leveraging University Capital and In-Kind Resources into Community Partnerships

    Public universities with campuses positioned in urban, low-income neighborhoods have an opportunity and civic obligation to engage with the K-12 schools, non-profits, and community-based organizations who directly serve their community.&nbsp; However, the lack of centralization of our community-facing work and the need to institutionalize community engagement leave community-engaged administrators and scholars with limited budgets and without formal strategic plans that prioritize the commitment of university resources.&nbsp; This paper presents five types of capital that can be leveraged from universities as in-kind resources to create educational programing for youth from low-income communities.&nbsp; Findings highlight the planning and implementation of three out-of-school time (OST) educational partnership programs alternatively based within a community center, on campus, and in two public schools.&nbsp; A document review and deductive thematic analysis of archival data capturing the in-kind resources from the university during a six-year period found the following types of capital were leveraged: physical, financial, intellectual, human, and social.&nbsp; Findings reveal granular examples of what, where, and how to leverage in-kind campus resources to launch and sustain educational youth programming and the early renderings of a strategic model for establishing inter-organizational alliances with cross-campus units for mutually beneficial outcomes that come from institutionalizing community engagement

    Paracrine cyclooxygenase-2 activity by macrophages drives colorectal adenoma progression in the Apc Min/+ mouse model of intestinal tumorigenesis

    Genetic deletion or pharmacological inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 abrogates intestinal adenoma development at early stages of colorectal carcinogenesis. COX-2 is localised to stromal cells (predominantly macrophages) in human and mouse intestinal adenomas. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that paracrine Cox-2-mediated signalling from macrophages drives adenoma growth and progression in vivo in the ApcMin/+ mouse model of intestinal tumorigenesis. Using a transgenic C57Bl/6 mouse model of Cox-2 over-expression driven by the chicken lysozyme locus (cLys-Cox-2), which directs integration site-independent, copy number-dependent transgene expression restricted to macrophages, we demonstrated that stromal macrophage Cox-2 in colorectal (but not small intestinal) adenomas from cLys-Cox-2 x ApcMin/+ mice was associated with significantly increased tumour size (P = 0.025) and multiplicity (P = 0.025), compared with control ApcMin/+ mice. Transgenic macrophage Cox-2 expression was associated with increased dysplasia, epithelial cell Cox-2 expression and submucosal tumour invasion, as well as increased nuclear β-catenin translocation in dysplastic epithelial cells. In vitro studies confirmed that paracrine macrophage Cox-2 signalling drives catenin-related transcription in intestinal epithelial cells. Paracrine macrophage Cox-2 activity drives growth and progression of ApcMin/+ mouse colonic adenomas, linked to increased epithelial cell β-catenin dysregulation. Stromal cell (macrophage) gene regulation and signalling represent valid targets for chemoprevention of colorectal cancer

    Keeping the driver in the loop through semi-automated or manual lane changes in conditionally automated driving

    In the current study we investigated if drivers of conditionally automated vehicles can be kept in the loop through lane change maneuvers. More specifically, we examined whether involving drivers in lane-changes during a conditionally automated ride can influence critical take-over behavior and keep drivers' gaze on the road. In a repeated measures driving simulator study (n = 85), drivers drove the same route three times, each trial containing four lane changes that were all either (1) automated, (2) semi-automated or (3) manual. Each ride ended with a critical take-over situation that could be solved by braking and/or steering. Critical take-over reactions were analyzed with a linear mixed model and parametric accelerated failure time survival analysis. As expected, semi-automated and manual lane changes throughout the ride led to 13.5% and 17.0% faster maximum deceleration compared to automated lane changes. Additionally, semi-automated and manual lane changes improved the quality of the take-over by significantly decreasing standard deviation of the steering wheel angle. Unexpectedly, drivers in the semi-automated condition were slowest to start the braking maneuver. This may have been caused by the drivers' confusion as to how the semi-automated system would react. Additionally, the percentage gaze off-the-road was significantly decreased by the semi-automated (6.0%) and manual (6.6%) lane changes. Taken together, the results suggest that semi-automated and manual transitions may be an alarm-free instrument which developers could use to help maintain drivers' perception-action loop and improve automated driving safety

    Keeping the driver in the loop in conditionally automated driving:A perception-action theory approach

    In this paper we investigated if keeping the driver in the perception–action loop during automated driving can improve take-over behavior from conditionally automated driving. To meet this aim, we designed an experiment in which visual exposure (perception) and manual control exposure (action) were manipulated. In a dynamic driving simulator experiment, participants (n = 88) performed a non-driving related task either in a head-up display in the windshield (high visual exposure) or on a head-down display near the gear shift (low visual exposure). While driving, participants were either in an intermittent control-mode with four noncritical take-over situations (high manual control exposure), or in a continuous automation-mode throughout the ride (low manual control exposure). In all conditions, a critical take-over had to be carried out after an approximately 13 min ride. Measurements of take-over behavior showed that only high visual exposure had an effect on hands-on reaction time measurements. Both visual exposure and manual control exposure had small to medium sized main effects on time to system deactivation, the maximum velocity of the steering wheel, and the standard deviation of the steering wheel angle. The combined high visual – and high manual control exposure condition led to 0.55 s faster reaction time and 37% less steering variability in comparison to the worst case low visual – and low manual control exposure condition. Together, results corroborate that maintaining visual exposure and manual control exposure during automated driving can be efficacious and suggest that their positive effects are additive

    We report the sequence and analysis of the 814-megabase genome of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, a model for developmental and systems biology. The sequencing strategy combined whole-genome shotgun and bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) sequences. This use of BAC clones, aided by a pooling strategy, overcame difficulties associated with high heterozygosity of the genome. The genome encodes about 23,300 genes, including many previously thought to be vertebrate innovations or known only outside the deuterostomes. This echinoderm genome provides an evolutionary outgroup for the chordates and yields insights into the evolution of deuterostomes
