A weakly stable algorithm for general Toeplitz systems

We show that a fast algorithm for the QR factorization of a Toeplitz or Hankel matrix A is weakly stable in the sense that R^T.R is close to A^T.A. Thus, when the algorithm is used to solve the semi-normal equations R^T.Rx = A^Tb, we obtain a weakly stable method for the solution of a nonsingular Toeplitz or Hankel linear system Ax = b. The algorithm also applies to the solution of the full-rank Toeplitz or Hankel least squares problem.Comment: 17 pages. An old Technical Report with postscript added. Lack of IL-17 Receptor A signaling aggravates lymphoproliferation in C57BL/6 lpr mice

Defects in Fas function correlate with susceptibility to systemic autoimmune diseases like autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome (ALPS) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). C57BL/6 lpr (B6/lpr) mice are used as an animal model of ALPS and develop a mild SLE phenotype. Involvement of interleukin-17A (IL-17A) has been suggested in both phenotypes. Since IL-17 receptor A is part of the signaling pathway of many IL-17 family members we investigated the role of IL-17 receptor signaling in disease development in mice with a B6/lpr background. B6/lpr mice were crossed with IL-17 receptor A deficient (IL-17RA KO) mice and followed over time for disease development. IL-17RA KO/lpr mice presented with significantly enhanced lymphoproliferation compared with B6/lpr mice, which was characterized by dramatic lymphadenomegaly/splenomegaly and increased lymphocyte numbers, expansion of double-negative (DN) T-cells and enhanced plasma cell formation. However, the SLE phenotype was not enhanced, as anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) titers and induction of glomerulonephritis were not different. In contrast, levels of High Mobility Group Box 1 (HMGB1) and anti-HMGB1 autoantibodies were significantly increased in IL-17RA KO/lpr mice compared to B6/lpr mice. These data show that lack of IL-17RA signaling aggravates the lymphoproliferative phenotype in B6/lpr mice but does not affect the SLE phenotype

Approximate Subtree Identification in Heterogeneous XML Documents Collections

    No full text
Due to the heterogeneous nature of XML data for internet applications exact matching of queries is often inadequate. The need arises to quickly identify subtrees of XML documents in a collection that are similar to a given pattern. In this paper we discuss different similarity measures between a pattern and subtrees of documents in the collection. An efficient algorithm for the identification of document subtrees, approximately conforming to the pattern, by indexing structures is then introduced

In vitro and in vivo effects of ribavirin on human respiratory epithelium.

The effects of ribavirin, a broad spectrum antiviral agent, on the structure and function of normal human nasal epithelium have been studied in vitro, as has also the in vivo effect of treatment with nebulised ribavirin on nasal mucociliary clearance of saccharin in four patients. Ciliary beat frequency was measured by a photometric technique, and changes in epithelial and ciliary ultrastructure were assessed by transmission electron microscopy. Ribavirin solution at the recommended concentration of 20 mg/ml had no adverse effects on ciliary activity in vitro; at concentrations of 50 mg/ml and above it slowed ciliary beating significantly and at 60 mg/ml caused ciliostasis associated with epithelial disruption. Nasal inhalation of ribavirin at 60 mg/ml for up to 20 minutes, however, did not slow nasal mucociliary clearance, nor did it adversely affect the ciliary beating or structure of nasal ciliated epithelium examined in vitro immediately after inhalation
