Spherical Deconstruction
We present evidence that N=1* SUSY Yang-Mills provides a deconstruction of a
six-dimensional gauge theory compactified on a two-sphere. The six-dimensional
theory is a twisted compactification of N=(1,1) SUSY Yang-Mills theory of the
type considered by Maldacena and Nunez (MN). In particular, we calculate the
full classical spectrum of the N=1* theory with gauge group U(N) in its Higgs
vacuum. In the limit N goes to infinity, we find an exact agreement with the
Kaluza-Klein spectrum of the MN compactification.Comment: 16 page
Nanostructural characterization of geopolymers by advanced beamline techniques
This paper presents the outcomes of a series of beamline-based studies, the results of which are combined to provide a more detailed multiscale understanding of the structure and chemistry of geopolymer binders.
The range of beamline-based characterization techniques which have been applied to the study of geopolymer binders is increasing rapidly; although no single technique can provide a holistic view of binder structure across all the length scales which are of importance in determining strength development and durability, the synergy achievable through the combination of multiple beamline techniques is leading to rapid advances in knowledge in this area. Studies based around beamline infrared and X-ray fluorescence microscopy, in situ and ex situ neutron pair distribution function analysis, and nano- and micro-tomography, are combined to provide an understanding of geopolymer gel chemistry, nano- and microstructure in two and three dimensions, and the influences of seeded nucleation and precursor chemistry in these key areas.
The application of advanced characterization methods in recent years has brought the understanding of geopolymer chemistry from a point, not more than a decade ago, when the analysis of the detailed chemistry of the aluminosilicate binder gel was considered intractable due to its disordered (“X-ray amorphous”) nature, to the present day where the influence of key compositional parameters on nanostructure is well understood, and both gel structure and reaction kinetics can be manipulated through methods including seeding, temperature variation, and careful mix design.
This paper therefore provides a review outlining the value of nanotechnology – and particularly nanostructural characterization – in the development and optimization of a new class of environmentally beneficial cements and concretes. Key engineering parameters, in particularly strength development and permeability, are determined at a nanostructural level, and so it is essential that gel structures can be analyzed and manipulated at this level; beamline-based characterization techniques are critical in providing the ability to achieve this goal
Magnetization dynamics with a spin-transfer torque
The magnetization reversal and dynamics of a spin valve pillar, whose lateral
size is 6464 nm, are studied by using micromagnetic simulation in
the presence of spin transfer torque. Spin torques display both characteristics
of magnetic damping (or anti-damping) and of an effective magnetic field. For a
steady-state current, both M-I and M-H hysteresis loops show unique features,
including multiple jumps, unusual plateaus and precessional states. These
states originate from the competition between the energy dissipation due to
Gilbert damping and the energy accumulation due to the spin torque supplied by
the spin current. The magnetic energy oscillates as a function of time even for
a steady-state current. For a pulsed current, the minimum width and amplitude
of the spin torque for achieving current-driven magnetization reversal are
quantitatively determined. The spin torque also shows very interesting thermal
activation that is fundamentally different from an ordinary damping effect.Comment: 15 figure
Mirror Symmetry and Other Miracles in Superstring Theory
The dominance of string theory in the research landscape of quantum gravity
physics (despite any direct experimental evidence) can, I think, be justified
in a variety of ways. Here I focus on an argument from mathematical fertility,
broadly similar to Hilary Putnam's 'no miracles argument' that, I argue, many
string theorists in fact espouse. String theory leads to many surprising,
useful, and well-confirmed mathematical 'predictions' - here I focus on mirror
symmetry. These predictions are made on the basis of general physical
principles entering into string theory. The success of the mathematical
predictions are then seen as evidence for framework that generated them. I
attempt to defend this argument, but there are nonetheless some serious
objections to be faced. These objections can only be evaded at a high
(philosophical) price.Comment: For submission to a Foundations of Physics special issue on "Forty

Computer-aided design of nano-filter construction using DNA self-assembly
Computer-aided design plays a fundamental role in both top-down and bottom-up nano-system fabrication. This paper presents a bottom-up nano-filter patterning process based on DNA self-assembly. In this study we designed a new method to construct fully designed nano-filters with the pores between 5 nm and 9 nm in diameter. Our calculations illustrated that by constructing such a nano-filter we would be able to separate many molecules
The Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey: Variable Selection and Anticipated Results
We present the selection algorithm and anticipated results for the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS). TDSS is an Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)-IV Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) subproject that will provide initial identification spectra of approximately 220,000 luminosity-variable objects (variable stars and active galactic nuclei across 7500 deg2 selected from a combination of SDSS and multi-epoch Pan-STARRS1 photometry. TDSS will be the largest spectroscopic survey to explicitly target variable objects, avoiding pre-selection on the basis of colors or detailed modeling of specific variability characteristics. Kernel Density Estimate analysis of our target population performed on SDSS Stripe 82 data suggests our target sample will be 95% pure (meaning 95% of objects we select have genuine luminosity variability of a few magnitudes or more). Our final spectroscopic sample will contain roughly 135,000 quasars and 85,000 stellar variables, approximately 4000 of which will be RR Lyrae stars which may be used as outer Milky Way probes. The variability-selected quasar population has a smoother redshift distribution than a color-selected sample, and variability measurements similar to those we develop here may be used to make more uniform quasar samples in large surveys. The stellar variable targets are distributed fairly uniformly across color space, indicating that TDSS will obtain spectra for a wide variety of stellar variables including pulsating variables, stars with significant chromospheric activity, cataclysmic variables, and eclipsing binaries. TDSS will serve as a pathfinder mission to identify and characterize the multitude of variable objects that will be detected photometrically in even larger variability surveys such as Large Synoptic Survey Telescope
Microcausality and quantization of the fermionic Myers-Pospelov model
We study the fermionic sector of the Myers and Pospelov theory with a general
background . The spacelike case without temporal component is well defined
and no new ingredients came about, apart from the explicit Lorentz invariance
violation. The lightlike case is ill defined and physically discarded. However,
the other case where a nonvanishing temporal component of the background is
present, the theory is physically consistent. We show that new modes appear as
a consequence of higher time derivatives. We quantize the timelike theory and
calculate the microcausality violation which turns out to occur near the light
cone.Comment: 9 pages and 3 figures, new version accepted in EPJC, Volume 72, Issue
