Observation of strong final-state effects in pi+ production in pp collisions at 400 MeV
Differential cross sections of the reactions and have been measured at MeV by detecting the charged
ejectiles in the angular range . The
deduced total cross sections agree well with those published previously for
neighbouring energies. The invariant mass spectra are observed to be strongly
affected by production and final-state interaction. The data are
well described by Monte Carlo simulations including both these effects. The
ratio of and cross sections also compares
favourably to a recent theoretical prediction which suggests a dominance of
-production in the relative -state.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figure
Search for Narrow NNpi Resonances in Exclusive p p -> p p pi+ pi- Measurements
Narrow structures in the range of a few MeV have been searched for in p p pi+
and p p pi- invariant mass spectra obtained from exclusive measurements of the
p p -> p p pi+ pi- reaction at Tp = 725, 750 and 775 MeV using the PROMICE/WASA
detector at CELSIUS. The selected reaction is particularily well suited for the
search for NN and / or N Delta decoupled dibaryon resonances. Except for a
possible fluctuation at 2087 MeV/c^2 in Mpppi- no narrow structures could be
identified neither in Mpppi+ nor in Mpppi- on the 3 sigma level of statistical
significance, giving an upper limit (95% C.L.) for dibaryon production in this
reaction of sigma < 20 nb for 2020 MeV/c^2 < m(dibaryon) < 2085 MeV/c^2Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure
Polarisation of the omega meson in the pd-->3He+omega reaction at 1360 and 1450 MeV
The tensor polarisation of omega mesons produced in the pd-->3He+omega
reaction has been studied at two energies near threshold. The 3He nuclei were
detected in coincidence with the pi0pi+pi- or pi0gamma decay products of the
omega. In contrast to the case of phi meson production, the omega mesons are
found to be unpolarised. This brings into question the applicability of the
Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka rule when comparing the production of vector mesons in low
energy hadronic reactions.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
The pp -> pp pi pi pi reaction channels in the threshold region
The cross section for prompt neutral and charged three pion production in pp
interactions was measured at excess energies in the range 160 - 217 MeV. That
comprises the first measurement of the pp->pp pi0pi0pi0 reaction and the
comparison with the pp->pp pi+pi-pi0 reaction, in a very direct way. The
experiment was performed above the eta meson production threshold and the cross
section normalization was obtained from a concurrent measurement of the
reaction pp->pp eta with the eta decaying into 3 pions. Since the same final
states are selected, the measurement has a low systematical error. The measured
cross section ratio sigma(pp->pp pi+pi-pi0)/sigma(pp->pp pi0\pi0\pi0) is
compared to predictions of dominance of different isobars in the intermediate

have been carried out at GeV at the
CELSIUS storage ring using the WASA detector. The channel
evidences a pronounced enhancement at low invariant masses - as
anticipated from previous inclusive measurements of the ABC effect. This
enhancement is seen to be even much larger in the isoscalar
channel. The differential distributions prove this enhancement to be of
scalar-isoscalar nature. calculations give a good description of
the data, if a boundstate condition is imposed for the intermediate

The interactions of physical activity, exercise and genetics and their associations with bone mineral density: Implications for injury risk in elite athletes
Low bone mineral density (BMD) is established as a primary predictor of osteoporotic risk and can also have substantial implications for athlete health and injury risk in the elite sporting environment. BMD is a highly multi-factorial phenotype influenced by diet, hormonal characteristics and physical activity. The interrelationships between such factors, and a strong genetic component, suggested to be around 50-85% at various anatomical sites, determines skeletal health throughout life. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and case-control designs have revealed many loci associated with variation in BMD. However, a number of the candidate genes identified at these loci have no known associated biological function or have yet to be replicated in subsequent investigations. Furthermore, few investigations have considered gene-environment interactions - in particular, whether specific genes may be sensitive to mechanical loading from physical activity and the outcome of such an interaction for BMD and potential injury risk. Therefore, this review considers the importance of physical activity on BMD, genetic associations with BMD and how subsequent investigation requires consideration of the interaction between these strong determinants. Future research using well-defined independent cohorts such as elite athletes, who experience much greater mechanical stress than most, to study such phenotypes, can provide a greater understanding of these factors as well as the biological underpinnings of such a physiologically “extreme” population. Subsequently, modification of training, exercise or rehabilitation programmes based upon genetic characteristics could have substantial implications in both the sporting and public health domains once the fundamental research has been conducted successfully
