    Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Febr2

    Electronic and magnetic (e-m) properties of FeBr2 have been surprisingly well described as originating from the Fe2+ ions and their fine electronic structure. The fine electronic structure have been evaluated taking into account the spin-orbit (s-o) coupling, crystal-field and inter-site spin-dependent interactions. The required magnetic doublet ground state with an excited singlet at D=2.8 meV results from the trigonal distortion. This effect of the trigonal distortion and a large magnetic moment of iron, of 4.4 mB, can be theoretically derived provided the s-o coupling is correctly taking into account. The obtained good agreement with experimental data indicates on extremaly strong correlations of the six 3d electrons in the Fe2+ ion yielding their full localization and the insulating state. These calculations show that for the meaningful analysis of e-m properties of FeBr2 the spin-orbit coupling is essentially important and that the orbital moment (0.74 mB) is largely unquenched (by the off-cubic trigonal distortion in the presence of the spin-orbit coupling).Comment: 11 pages in RevTex, 5 figure

    The association between gender and priority of admission in Florida stroke patients

    Introduction/Objective: Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States and results in significant morbidity and mortality annually. Its wide prevalence and critical nature make it essential to recognize and properly triage patients with symptoms of stroke so that appropriate time-sensitive interventions may be delivered. Many studies have delineated gender differences in risk, diagnosis and treatment of stroke; however, limited information exists on the association between gender and Emergency Department (ED) triage priority. The objective of this study is to determine if there is a gender difference in the assignation of an emergency priority of admission code among Florida stroke patients. Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was performed through secondary analysis of the Florida Stroke Registry, composed of hospital discharge data collected by the Agency for Healthcare Administration (AHCA) on Florida stroke patients from 2012. A descriptive analysis was utilized to profile the study population, calculating measures of centrality and dispersion of demographic variables. We tested associations of our bivariate analysis using chi-square tests, then performed a multivariate analysis using logistic regression to control for confounders. Odds ratios were used to measure associations. Results: Women were 24% more likely to receive an emergency priority of admission code than men. Following adjustment and stratification by primary stroke center designation, it was determined that women remained more likely to receive a priority code of admission than males. This occurred at a higher rate in primary stroke centers (35% more) than in non-certified hospitals (11% more). Independently, the other factors included in the adjusted analysis (age, race, payer, source of admission, day of the week, and stroke center designation) also held statistically significant associations with emergency priority triage. Conclusions: Gender disparity does exist among Florida stroke patient triage and more research should be conducted concerning the factors influencing the assignation of an emergency priority code. Emergency department care providers may need more gender specific protocols on stroke triage and additional training in recognizing gender specific symptoms. Additional studies need to be conducted in order to identify if gender disparities exist in other links of the stroke chain of survival

    Exploring dark matter microphysics with galaxy surveys

    We use present cosmological observations and forecasts of future experiments to illustrate the power of large-scale structure (LSS) surveys in probing dark matter (DM) microphysics and unveiling potential deviations from the standard ΛCDM scenario. To quantify this statement, we focus on an extension of ΛCDM with DM-neutrino scattering, which leaves a distinctive imprint on the angular and matter power spectra. After finding that future CMB experiments (such as COrE+) will not significantly improve the constraints set by the Planck satellite, we show that the next generation of galaxy clustering surveys (such as DESI) could play a leading role in constraining alternative cosmologies and even have the potential to make a discovery. Typically we find that DESI would be an order of magnitude more sensitive to DM interactions than Planck, thus probing effects that until now have only been accessible via N-body simulations

    A long-acting GH receptor antagonist through fusion to GH binding protein.

    Acromegaly is a human disease of growth hormone (GH) excess with considerable morbidity and increased mortality. Somatostatin analogues are first line medical treatment but the disease remains uncontrolled in up to 40% of patients. GH receptor (GHR) antagonist therapy is more effective but requires frequent high-dose injections. We have developed an alternative technology for generating a long acting potent GHR antagonist through translational fusion of a mutated GH linked to GH binding protein and tested three candidate molecules. All molecules had the amino acid change (G120R), creating a competitive GHR antagonist and we tested the hypothesis that an amino acid change in the GH binding domain (W104A) would increase biological activity. All were antagonists in bioassays. In rats all antagonists had terminal half-lives >20 hours. After subcutaneous administration in rabbits one variant displayed a terminal half-life of 40.5 hours. A single subcutaneous injection of the same variant in rabbits resulted in a 14% fall in IGF-I over 7 days. IN CONCLUSION: we provide proof of concept that a fusion of GHR antagonist to its binding protein generates a long acting GHR antagonist and we confirmed that introducing the W104A amino acid change in the GH binding domain enhances antagonist activity

    Oxygen Moment Formation and Canting in Li2CuO2

    The possibilities of oxygen moment formation and canting in the quasi-1D cuprate Li2CuO2 are investigated using single crystal neutron diffraction at 2 K. The observed magnetic intensities could not be explained without the inclusion of a large ordered oxygen moment of 0.11(1) Bohr magnetons. Least-squares refinement of the magnetic structure of Li2CuO2 in combination with a spin-density Patterson analysis shows that the magnetization densities of the Cu and O atoms are highly aspherical, forming quasi-1D ribbons of localised Cu and O moments. Magnetic structure refinements and low-field magnetization measurements both suggest that the magnetic structure of Li2CuO2 at 2 K may be canted.     A pilot randomised controlled trial of personalised care after treatment for prostate cancer (TOPCAT-P): nurse-led holistic-needs assessment and individualised psychoeducational intervention: study protocol

    INTRODUCTION. Prostate cancer is common and the incidence is increasing, but more men are living longer after diagnosis, and die with their disease rather than of it. Nonetheless, specific and substantial physical, sexual, emotional and mental health problems often lead to a poor quality of life. Urology services increasingly struggle to cope with the demands of follow-up care, and primary care is likely to play the central role in long-term follow-up. The present phase II trial will evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a nurse-led, person-centred psychoeducational intervention, delivered in community or primary care settings. METHODS AND ANALYSIS. Prostate cancer survivors diagnosed in the past 9-48 months and currently biochemically stable will be identified from hospital records by their treating clinician. Eligible men would have either completed radical treatment, or would be followed up with prostate specific antigen monitoring and symptom reporting. We will recruit 120 patients who will be randomised to receive either an augmented form of usual care, or an additional nurse-led intervention for a period of 36 weeks. Following the health policy in Wales, the intervention is offered by a key worker, is promoting prudent healthcare and is using a holistic needs assessment. Outcome measures will assess physical symptoms, psychological well-being, confidence in managing own health and quality of life. Healthcare service use will be measured over 36 weeks. Feedback interviews with patients and clinicians will further inform the acceptability of the intervention. Recruitment, attrition, questionnaire completion rates and outcome measures variability will be assessed, and results will inform the design of a future phase III trial and accompanying economic evaluation. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION. Ethics approval was granted by Bangor University and North Wales REC (13/WA/0291). Results will be reported in peer-reviewed publications, at scientific conferences, and directly through national cancer and primary care networks. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER. ISRCTN 34516019

    The in vivo transcriptomic blueprint of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the lung

    Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) genes encoding proteins targeted by vaccines and drugs should be expressed in the lung, the main organ affected by Mtb, for these to be effective. However, the pulmonary expression of most Mtb genes and their proteins remains poorly characterized. The aim of this study is to fill this knowledge gap. We analyzed large scale transcriptomic datasets from specimens of Mtb-infected humans, TB-hypersusceptible (C3H/FeJ) and TB-resistant (C57BL/6J) mice and compared data to in vitro cultured Mtb gene-expression profiles. Results revealed high concordance in the most abundantly in vivo expressed genes between pulmonary Mtb transcriptomes from different datasets and different species. As expected, this contrasted with a lower correlation found with the highest expressed Mtb genes from in vitro datasets. Among the most consistently and highly in vivo expressed genes, 35 have not yet been explored as targets for vaccination or treatment. More than half of these genes are involved in protein synthesis or metabolic pathways. This first lung-oriented multi-study analysis of the in vivo expressed Mtb-transcriptome provides essential data that considerably increase our understanding of pulmonary TB infection biology, and identifies novel molecules for target-based TB-vaccine and drug development.Immunogenetics and cellular immunology of bacterial infectious disease

    Critical point network for drainage between rough surfaces

    In this paper, we present a network method for computing two-phase flows between two rough surfaces with significant contact areas. Low-capillary number drainage is investigated here since one-phase flows have been previously investigated in other contributions. An invasion percolation algorithm is presented for modeling slow displacement of a wetting fluid by a non wetting one between two rough surfaces. Short-correlated Gaussian process is used to model random rough surfaces.The algorithm is based on a network description of the fracture aperture field. The network is constructed from the identification of critical points (saddles and maxima) of the aperture field. The invasion potential is determined from examining drainage process in a flat mini-channel. A direct comparison between numerical prediction and experimental visualizations on an identical geometry has been performed for one realization of an artificial fracture with a moderate fractional contact area of about 0.3. A good agreement is found between predictions and observations

    The state of tranquility: Subjective perception is shaped by contextual modulation of auditory connectivity

    In this study, we investigated brain mechanisms for the generation of subjective experience from objective sensory inputs. Our experimental construct was subjective tranquility. Tranquility is a mental state more likely to occur in the presence of objective sensory inputs that arise from natural features in the environment. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine the neural response to scenes that were visually distinct (beach images vs. freeway images) and experienced as tranquil (beach) or non-tranquil (freeway). Both sets of scenes had the same auditory component because waves breaking on a beach and vehicles moving on a freeway can produce similar auditory spectral and temporal characteristics, perceived as a constant roar. Compared with scenes experienced as non-tranquil, we found that subjectively tranquil scenes were associated with significantly greater effective connectivity between the auditory cortex and medial prefrontal cortex, a region implicated in the evaluation of mental states. Similarly enhanced connectivity was also observed between the auditory cortex and posterior cingulate gyrus, temporoparietal cortex and thalamus. These findings demonstrate that visual context can modulate connectivity of the auditory cortex with regions implicated in the generation of subjective states. Importantly, this effect arises under conditions of identical auditory input. Hence, the same sound may be associated with different percepts reflecting varying connectivity between the auditory cortex and other brain regions. This suggests that subjective experience is more closely linked to the connectivity state of the auditory cortex than to its basic sensory inputs
