Understanding potential career changers’ experience of career confidence following a positive psychology based coaching programme
Changes in the labour market over the last decades have led to an increase in the number of career and job changes individuals are likely to face in their working lives. Previous research indicates that a high level of confidence can help individuals to make positive career changes, yet an agreed definition of confidence is not widely accepted, and the literature provides a limited evidence base for practice. This research involved five female participants who were contemplating a career change. They took part in a coaching programme which consisted of four positive psychology interventions based on a proposal of core confidence as a higher order construct composed of self-efficacy, hope, optimism and resilience. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and written reflections and an interpretative phenomenological analysis showed that participants perceived their career confidence before the programme as low, incorporating negative affect and self-doubt. After the programme, participants demonstrated increased career engagement, self-awareness and a positive and optimistic outlook. The analysis revealed that change was effected through the development of hope, change in cognitive processes and coaching as a catalyst. Implications for the definition of career confidence, and for positive psychology and career coaching practice are considered
Extreme damped Lyman- absorption in young star-forming galaxies at
The onset of galaxy formation is thought to be initiated by the infall of
neutral, pristine gas onto the first protogalactic halos. However, direct
constraints on the abundance of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) in galaxies have
been difficult to obtain at early cosmic times. Here we present spectroscopic
observations with JWST of three galaxies at redshifts , about
Myr after the Big Bang, that show strong damped Lyman-
absorption ( cm) from HI in their local
surroundings, an order of magnitude in excess of the Lyman- absorption
caused by the neutral intergalactic medium at these redshifts. Consequently,
these early galaxies cannot be contributing significantly to reionization, at
least at their current evolutionary stages. Simulations of galaxy formation
show that such massive gas reservoirs surrounding young galaxies so early in
the history of the universe is a signature of galaxy formation in progress.Comment: Submitte
Gender differences in best friendships
Prior investigations of friendship patterns have reported gender differences, with women's same-gender friendships tending to be richer and having a possible therapeutic value, as compared to those of men. Compared to same-gender best friendships, opposite-gender best friendships have been described as less fulfilling for women and more fulfilling for men. The present study explored such differences more fully in a sample of 65 female and 58 male predominantly white college students. Subjects completed four modified versions of P. H. Wright's [(1985) “The Acquaintance Description Form,” In S. F. Duck and D. Pearlman (Eds.), Understanding Personal Relationships: An Interdisciplinarian Approach, London: Sage] Acquaintance Description Form, describing their actual and ideal same-gender best friendships and their actual and ideal opposite-gender best friendships. They also responded to several measures of dysphoria. In the present study, the lowest scores for the friendship scales were reported by male subjects describing same-gender friendships, both ideal and actual. Biologically oriented approaches to the study of human conflict have thus far been limited largely to the study of aggression. A sample of the literature on this topic is reviewed, drawing upon four major approaches: comparative psychology, ethology (including some popularized accounts), evolutionary-based theories, and several areas of human physiology. More sophisticated relationships between so-called "innate" and "acquired" determinants of behavior are discussed, along with the proper relevance of animal behavior studies for human behavior. Unless contained in a comprehensive theory which includes social and psychological variables, biolog ically oriented theories (although often valid within their domain) offer at best severely limited and at worst highly misleading explanations of complex social conflicts. Multitrait analysis of glaucoma identifies new risk loci and enables polygenic prediction of disease susceptibility and progression
Glaucoma, a disease characterized by progressive optic nerve degeneration, can be prevented through timely diagnosis and treatment. We characterize optic nerve photographs of 67,040 UK Biobank participants and use a multitrait genetic model to identify risk loci for glaucoma. A glaucoma polygenic risk score (PRS) enables effective risk stratification in unselected glaucoma cases and modifies penetrance of the MYOC variant encoding p.Gln368Ter, the most common glaucoma-associated myocilin variant. In the unselected glaucoma population, individuals in the top PRS decile reach an absolute risk for glaucoma 10 years earlier than the bottom decile and are at 15-fold increased risk of developing advanced glaucoma (top 10% versus remaining 90%, odds ratio = 4.20). The PRS predicts glaucoma progression in prospectively monitored, early manifest glaucoma cases (P = 0.004) and surgical intervention in advanced disease (P = 3.6 × 10). This glaucoma PRS will facilitate the development of a personalized approach for earlier treatment of high-risk individuals, with less intensive monitoring and treatment being possible for lower-risk groups
JWST reveals a possible galaxy merger in triply-lensed MACS0647JD
MACS0647JD is a triply-lensed galaxy originally discovered with
the Hubble Space Telescope. Here we report new JWST imaging, which clearly
resolves MACS0647JD as having two components that are either merging
galaxies or stellar complexes within a single galaxy. Both are very small, with
stellar masses and radii . The brighter
larger component "A" is intrinsically very blue (), likely due
to very recent star formation and no dust, and is spatially extended with an
effective radius . The smaller component "B" appears redder
(), likely because it is older () with mild dust
extinction (), and a smaller radius . We
identify galaxies with similar colors in a high-redshift simulation, finding
their star formation histories to be out of phase. With an estimated stellar
mass ratio of roughly 2:1 and physical projected separation ,
we may be witnessing a galaxy merger 400 million years after the Big Bang. We
also identify a candidate companion galaxy C away, likely
destined to merge with galaxies A and B. The combined light from galaxies A+B
is magnified by factors of 8, 5, and 2 in three lensed images JD1, 2, and
3 with F356W fluxes , , (AB mag 25.1, 25.6, 26.6).
MACS0647JD is significantly brighter than other galaxies recently discovered
at similar redshifts with JWST. Without magnification, it would have AB mag
27.3 (). With a high confidence level, we obtain a photometric
redshift of based on photometry measured in 6 NIRCam filters
spanning , out to rest-frame. JWST NIRSpec
observations planned for January 2023 will deliver a spectroscopic redshift and

Social Media, Gender and the Mediatisation of War: Exploring the German Armed Forces’ Visual Representation of the Afghanistan Operation on Facebook
Studies on the mediatisation of war point to attempts of governments to regulate the visual perspective of their involvements in armed conflict – the most notable example being the practice of ‘embedded reporting’ in Iraq and Afghanistan. This paper focuses on a different strategy of visual meaning-making, namely, the publication of images on social media by armed forces themselves. Specifically, we argue that the mediatisation of war literature could profit from an increased engagement with feminist research, both within Critical Security/Critical Military Studies and within Science and Technology Studies that highlight the close connection between masculinity, technology and control. The article examines the German military mission in Afghanistan as represented on the German armed forces’ official Facebook page. Germany constitutes an interesting, and largely neglected, case for the growing literature on the mediatisation of war: its strong antimilitarist political culture makes the representation of war particularly delicate. The paper examines specific representational patterns of Germany’s involvement in Afghanistan and discusses the implications which arise from what is placed inside the frame of visibility and what remains out of its view
