Photochemical colour change for traditional watercolour pigments in low oxygen levels

An investigation for light exposure on pigments in low-oxygen environments (in the range 0–5% oxygen) was conducted using a purpose-built automated microfadometer for a large sample set including multiple samples of traditional watercolour pigments from nineteenth-century and twentieth-century sources, selected for concerns over their stability in anoxia. The pigments were prepared for usage in watercolour painting: ground and mixed in gum Arabic and applied to historically accurate gelatine glue-sized cotton and linen-based papers. Anoxia benefited many colorants and no colorant fared worse in anoxia than in air, with the exception of Prussian blue and Prussian green (which contains Prussian blue). A Prussian blue sampled from the studio materials of J.M.W. Turner (1775 − 1851) was microfaded in different environments (normal air (20.9% oxygen) 0, 1, 2, 3.5, or 5% oxygen in nitrogen) and the subsequent dark behaviour was measured. The behaviour of the sample (in normal air, anoxia, and 5% oxygen in nitrogen) proved to be consistent with the 55 separately sourced Prussian blue samples. When exposed to light in 5% oxygen in nitrogen, Prussian blue demonstrated the same light stability as in air (at approximately 21°C and 1 atmosphere). Storage in 5% oxygen is proposed for ‘anoxic’ display of paper-based artworks that might contain Prussian blue, to protect this material while reducing light-induced damage to other components of a watercolour, including organic colorants and the paper support

DETERMINANTS OF COMMERCIAL BANKS PROFITABILITY: EVIDENCE FROM GERMANY

This study aims to determine the determinants of profitability in commercial banks in Germany. The population is 7 banking sector companies listed in the DAX (Deutscher Aktienindex) Bank during the 2017-2020 period, with a sample of 5 banks and producing 20 observational data. The method used is descriptive and verification with multiple regression analysis. The results show that asset size, capital adequacy, deposits and non-interest income have a significant positive effect on profitability. Partially, asset size, capital adequacy and non-interest income have a significant positive effect, while the deposit has a significant negative effect on profitability. The most dominant factor affecting profitability is non-interest income

Desde sua criação até os dias de hoje a embalagem vem se tornando um produto do design cada vez mais complexo, por funções que lhe foram acrescentadas e por se tornar, praticamente, um vendedor silencioso. Por isso, a embalagem é um poderoso elemento de conexão entre a empresa e o consumidor. Em estabelecimentos de autosserviço, itens do segmento alimentício não são escolhidos apenas por necessidades e a embalagem com todos os seus recursos é um forte definidor de compra. Este ensaio teórico, de caráter exploratório, discute a influência de aspectos visuais do design da embalagem no comportamento de compra, analisando, através da atitude, aspectos cognitivos, emocionais e conativos, a influência que elementos como: cores, imagens, letras, legibilidade produzem nessa atitude do consumidor. A razão, o sentimento e o comportamento interferem sobre a forma como percebemos e reagimos aos aspectos visuais da embalagem. Portanto estudar esses aspectos vai melhorar a compreensão sobre o consumo e os aspectos que levam a ele, objeto permanente dos profissionais de marketing

A Re-discovered Inscription from Ephesos: A Funerary Monument for Vedia Kalliste

This paper restores to attention a funerary inscription for Vedia Kalliste that Richard Chandler published in 1774. It has since been ‘lost’, not appearing in any of the standard epigraphic corpora.  I  propose an emended text, and suggest that Vedia Kalliste was related to P. Vedius Pollio’s freedmen, who immigrated to Ephesos in the late 1st c. BCE. Her tomb was located in the east necropolis of Ephesos, near tombs of the other early Vedii. These were dismantled in 1st c. CE and reused in the renovation of the Stadium

Performance and Configuration Analysis of Tracking Time Anti-Windup PID Controllers

As popular as the application of Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller is, issues relating to saturation effects are still being addressed using different techniques.  Amongst such techniques are clamping anti-windup technique and back-calculation anti-windup techniques which primary prevent the integral term of the PID control action from reaching saturation. Separate tracking time technique was applied to both cases of anti-windup techniques investigated in this research unlike the conventional tracking time.  These anti-windup controllers were used to control the operation of a motorized globe valve.  The results obtained after simulation in MATLAB Simulink environment showed that both techniques gave similar outputs with a stable response of magnitude 0.95 at 1.5 seconds settling time when a unit step reference input signal was applied as compared to conventional PID controller that had an overshoot of 1.04 before settling to a magnitude of 1.0 at 1.5 seconds. Vibration, instability, and operational distortion were experienced when the anti-windup techniques were cascaded.  The same responses were obtained when their outputs were combined to control the motorized globe valve.  Other interesting mathematical models of important components are contained in the full paper
