Investigation of tidal displacements of the Earth's surface by laser ranging to GEOS-3
An analysis of laser ranging data from three stations was carried out in an attempt to measure the geometric Earth tide. Two different approaches to the problem were investigated. The dynamic method computes pass to pass apparent movements in stations height relative to short arcs fitted to several passes of data from the same station by the program GEODYNE. The quasi-geometric method reduces the dependence on unmodelled satellite dynamics to a knowledge of only the radial position of the satellite by considering two station simultaneous ranging at the precise time that the satellite passes through the plane defined by two stations and the center of mass of the Earth
Rubidium and lead abundances in giant stars of the globular clusters M 13 and NGC 6752
We present measurements of the neutron-capture elements Rb and Pb in five
giant stars of the globular cluster NGC 6752 and Pb measurements in four giants
of the globular cluster M 13. The abundances were derived by comparing
synthetic spectra with high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra
obtained using HDS on the Subaru telescope and MIKE on the Magellan telescope.
The program stars span the range of the O-Al abundance variation. In NGC 6752,
the mean abundances are [Rb/Fe] = -0.17 +/- 0.06 (sigma = 0.14), [Rb/Zr] =
-0.12 +/- 0.06 (sigma = 0.13), and [Pb/Fe] = -0.17 +/- 0.04 (sigma = 0.08). In
M 13 the mean abundance is [Pb/Fe] = -0.28 +/- 0.03 (sigma = 0.06). Within the
measurement uncertainties, we find no evidence for a star-to-star variation for
either Rb or Pb within these clusters. None of the abundance ratios [Rb/Fe],
[Rb/Zr], or [Pb/Fe] are correlated with the Al abundance. NGC 6752 may have
slightly lower abundances of [Rb/Fe] and [Rb/Zr] compared to the small sample
of field stars at the same metallicity. For M 13 and NGC 6752 the Pb abundances
are in accord with predictions from a Galactic chemical evolution model. If
metal-poor intermediate-mass asymptotic giant branch stars did produce the
globular cluster abundance anomalies, then such stars do not synthesize
significant quantities of Rb or Pb. Alternatively, if such stars do synthesize
large amounts of Rb or Pb, then they are not responsible for the abundance
anomalies seen in globular clusters.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap
Non-equilibrium Entanglement and Noise in Coupled Qubits
We study charge entanglement in two Coulomb-coupled double quantum dots in
thermal equilibrium and under stationary non-equilibrium transport conditions.
In the transport regime, the entanglement exhibits a clear switching threshold
and various limits due to suppression of tunneling by Quantum Zeno localisation
or by an interaction induced energy gap. We also calculate quantum noise
spectra and discuss the inter-dot current correlation as an indicator of the
entanglement in transport experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Femtosecond x rays from laser-plasma accelerators
Relativistic interaction of short-pulse lasers with underdense plasmas has
recently led to the emergence of a novel generation of femtosecond x-ray
sources. Based on radiation from electrons accelerated in plasma, these sources
have the common properties to be compact and to deliver collimated, incoherent
and femtosecond radiation. In this article we review, within a unified
formalism, the betatron radiation of trapped and accelerated electrons in the
so-called bubble regime, the synchrotron radiation of laser-accelerated
electrons in usual meter-scale undulators, the nonlinear Thomson scattering
from relativistic electrons oscillating in an intense laser field, and the
Thomson backscattered radiation of a laser beam by laser-accelerated electrons.
The underlying physics is presented using ideal models, the relevant parameters
are defined, and analytical expressions providing the features of the sources
are given. Numerical simulations and a summary of recent experimental results
on the different mechanisms are also presented. Each section ends with the
foreseen development of each scheme. Finally, one of the most promising
applications of laser-plasma accelerators is discussed: the realization of a
compact free-electron laser in the x-ray range of the spectrum. In the
conclusion, the relevant parameters characterizing each sources are summarized.
Considering typical laser-plasma interaction parameters obtained with currently
available lasers, examples of the source features are given. The sources are
then compared to each other in order to define their field of applications.Comment: 58 pages, 41 figure
Narrow-Band Imaging in Digestive Endoscopy
The application of opto-electronics in video-endoscopes improves the accuracy in diagnosis, through image processing and digital technology. Narrow Band Imaging (NBI), consists of using interference filters for the illumination of the target in narrowed blue and green bands of the spectrum. NBI is combined with magnifying endoscopy using an objective macro or an optical zoom. The NBI technique developed by Olympus Medical Systems is now available in the most recent models of video-endoscopes that use the non-sequential system of illumination (Lucera Spectrum) or the sequential R/G/B system of illumination (Exera II). The major contribution of the technique is in the characterization (analysis after detection) of the flat and superficial neoplastic areas of the digestive mucosa, with a specific application to the identification of intestinal metaplasia and early neoplastic changes in the Barrett's esophagus. The technique also proves helpful for the assessment of the vascular pattern in chronic inflammatory disorders of the digestive mucosa
Aetiology and pathogenesis of hidradenitis suppurativa
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder. Patients develop inflamed nodules and abscesses and, at later stages of disease, epithelialized tunnels and scars in skinfolds of axillary, inguinal, gluteal and perianal areas. Quality of life is affected due to severe pain, purulent secretion, restricted mobility and systemic involvement. Genetics and lifestyle factors including smoking and obesity contribute to the development of HS. These factors lead to microbiome alteration, subclinical inflammation around the terminal hair follicles, and infundibular hyperkeratosis, resulting in plugging and rupture of the follicles. Cell-damage-associated molecules and propagating bacteria trigger inflammation and lead to massive immune cell infiltration that clinically manifests as inflamed nodules and abscesses. The immune system plays a key role also in the progression and chronification of skin alterations. Innate proinflammatory cytokines (e.g. interleukin-1 beta and tumour necrosis factor-alpha), mediators of activated T helper (Th)1 and Th17 cells (e.g. interleukin-17 and interferon-gamma), and effector mechanisms of neutrophilic granulocytes, macrophages and plasma cells are involved. Simultaneously, skin lesions contain anti-inflammatory mediators (e.g. interleukin-10) and show limited activity of Th22 and regulatory T cells. The inflammatory vicious circle finally results in pain, purulence, tissue destruction and scarring. Chronic inflammation in patients with HS is also frequently detected in organs other than the skin, as indicated by their comorbidities. All these aspects represent a challenge for the development of therapeutic approaches, which are urgently needed for this debilitating disease. This scholarly review focuses on the causes and pathogenetic mechanisms of HS and the potential therapeutic value of this knowledge
Giant Conductance Oscillations In Mesoscopic Andreev Interferometers
We analyze the electrical conductance of a two-dimensional, phase
coherent structure in contact with two superconductors, which is known to be an
oscillatory function of the phase difference between the
superconductors. It is predicted that for a metallic sample, the amplitude of
oscillation is enhanced by placing a normal barrier at the interface and that,
by tuning the strength of the barrier, can be orders of magnitude greater than
values observed in recent experiments. Giant oscillations can also be obtained
without a barrier, provided a crucial sum rule is broken. This can be achieved
by disorder induced normal scattering. In the absence of zero phase
inter-channel scattering, the conductance possesses a zero phase minimum.Comment: 4 pages of Revtex, 6 figures available on reques
Quantum Rod Emission Coupled to Plasmonic Lattice Resonances: A Collective Directional Source of Polarized Light
We demonstrate that an array of optical antennas may render a thin layer of
randomly oriented semiconductor nanocrystals into an enhanced and highly
directional source of polarized light. The array sustains collective plasmonic
lattice resonances which are in spectral overlap with the emission of the
nanocrystals over narrow angular regions. Consequently, different photon
energies of visible light are enhanced and beamed into definite directions.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Cloud Structure and Physical Conditions in Star-forming Regions from Optical Observations. I. Data and Component Structure
We present high-resolution optical spectra (at ~0.6--1.8 km s-1) of
interstellar CN, CH, CH^+, \ion{Ca}{1}, \ion{K}{1}, and \ion{Ca}{2} absorption
toward 29 lines of sight in three star-forming regions, \rho Oph, Cep OB2, and
Cep OB3. The observations and data reduction are described. The agreement
between earlier measurements of the total equivalent widths and our results is
quite good. However, our higher resolution spectra reveal complex structure and
closely blended components in most lines of sight. The velocity component
structure of each species is obtained by analyzing the spectra of the six
species for a given sight line together. The tabulated column densities and
Doppler parameters of individual components are determined by using the method
of profile fitting. Total column densities along lines of sight are computed by
summing results from profile fitting for individual components and are compared
with column densities from the apparent optical depth method. A more detailed
analysis of these data and their implications will be presented in a companion
paper.Comment: 66 pages, 15 figures, accepted to ApJ
