Beyond the Blaze: Strategies for Improving Forest Service Fire Suppression Policies
Current Forest Service fire management policies restrict NEPA’s application to fire suppression actions and contribute to a lack of detailed information about the effectiveness and environmental impact of suppression efforts. Decisions by the U.S. District Court for the District of Montana in the Forest Service for Environmental Ethics v. U.S. Forest Service litigation suggest that NEPA review applies to commonly used fire suppression tactics and that the Forest Service should conduct this review before fires occur. Other recent federal district court decisions and congressional concern with current fire suppression efforts support the need for NEPA review in the fire suppression context. This comment explores this case law and analyzes Forest Service compliance with NEPA procedures in its fire suppression practices
hPSC-derived lung and intestinal organoids as models of human fetal tissue
AbstractIn vitro human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC) derived tissues are excellent models to study certain aspects of normal human development. Current research in the field of hPSC derived tissues reveals these models to be inherently fetal-like on both a morphological and gene expression level. In this review we briefly discuss current methods for differentiating lung and intestinal tissue from hPSCs into individual 3-dimensional units called organoids. We discuss how these methods mirror what is known about in vivo signaling pathways of the developing embryo. Additionally, we will review how the inherent immaturity of these models lends them to be particularly valuable in the study of immature human tissues in the clinical setting of premature birth. Human lung organoids (HLOs) and human intestinal organoids (HIOs) not only model normal development, but can also be utilized to study several important diseases of prematurity such as respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC)
Pengaruh Intellectual Capital Terhadap Nilai Perusahaan Pada Perusahaan Indeks Kompas 100 Di Bursa Efek Indonesia
According Petty and Guthrie (2000) one approach that is used in judgment and measurement of intangible asset approach is intellectual capital that has become attention focus in various sectors, good management, information technology, sociology, and accounting. A result of not reported intangible assets, financial statements company become less informative because they did not report all the company in their entirety.Intellectual capital is very important for the company especially company that shares liquid. The company which has the level of liquidity, the company which has a market capitalization of the value of a large, as well as the company which has a good performance having its own interest in the country like Index Kompas 100 Company. This reseach aims to review the influence of intellectual capital on the company (Index Kompas 100 Companies). This research in a non probability of sampling to Index Kompas 100 companies in 2010 - 2014 until they reached 37 companies to analyzed. Analysis the data used was analysis multiple linear regression. The result of the research indicated that intellectual capital projected with VAIC have leverage positive and significantly to value of enterprise projected with price to book value (PBV). This means that the intellectual capital that is both able to raise PBV are better too
The Metallicity of the Intracluster Medium Over Cosmic Time: Further Evidence for Early Enrichment
We use Chandra X-ray data to measure the metallicity of the intracluster
medium (ICM) in 245 massive galaxy clusters selected from X-ray and
Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect surveys, spanning redshifts .
Metallicities were measured in three different radial ranges, spanning cluster
cores through their outskirts. We explore trends in these measurements as a
function of cluster redshift, temperature, and surface brightness "peakiness"
(a proxy for gas cooling efficiency in cluster centers). The data at large
radii (0.5--1 ) are consistent with a constant metallicity, while at
intermediate radii (0.1-0.5 ) we see a late-time increase in
enrichment, consistent with the expected production and mixing of metals in
cluster cores. In cluster centers, there are strong trends of metallicity with
temperature and peakiness, reflecting enhanced metal production in the
lowest-entropy gas. Within the cool-core/sharply peaked cluster population,
there is a large intrinsic scatter in central metallicity and no overall
evolution, indicating significant astrophysical variations in the efficiency of
enrichment. The central metallicity in clusters with flat surface brightness
profiles is lower, with a smaller intrinsic scatter, but increases towards
lower redshifts. Our results are consistent with other recent measurements of
ICM metallicity as a function of redshift. They reinforce the picture implied
by observations of uniform metal distributions in the outskirts of nearby
clusters, in which most of the enrichment of the ICM takes place before cluster
formation, with significant later enrichment taking place only in cluster
centers, as the stellar populations of the central galaxies evolve.Comment: 13 pages. Accepted version, to appear in MNRA
Media System in Germany. Kirch collapse and the case of Springer.Prosieben.SAT1
En abril de 2002, el grupo alemán
Kirch presentaba suspensión de
pagos y declaraba la imposibilidad de
seguir adelante.
In April 2002, Kich group
was declared to be insolvent. The development
of the company was based
in a risky way of doing business,
taking advantage of its links with
CSU politicians and growing up without
any control in the last few years.
The bankruptcies of Kirch has to
be analysed to know more about the
past and future of media system in
Germany. This article seeks to explore
the communication sector after
Kirch collapse, above all in the moment
that the company is being shared
out. The present text also analyse
specially the sale of the most important
business, ProsiebenSAT.1.
Decisive policy and control considerations
could explain the current situation
of that holding
Determinants of extramarital sex in the Philippines
Understanding the factors associated with sexual behaviour is critical in slowing the spread of HIV in the Philippines, where sexual transmission accounts for most HIV infections, with the majority from heterosexual activity. Further, unprotected sex is common, as is sex with prostitutes. These factors increase the risks associated with extramarital sex. From an analysis of a nationally representative sample of women, we found that a number of factors were related to women’s reports of their husbands’ sexual activity outside their current relationship: women report that partners who are more educated, have been in the current relationship longer, and who had sex before marriage are more likely to be engaging in sex outside the marriage. Further, men who are older, who are farmers, who live at home, and who have more educated wives, were believed to be less likely to be having extramarital sex
Is entrepreneurship an emerging area of research? A computational response
Objective: We aim to answer four questions. First, with the increasing number of publications, is there a concentration in specific subjects, or on the contrary, a dispersion, amplifying the span of themes related to entrepreneurship? Second, is there a hierarchy of subjects, in the sense that some of them constitute the core of entrepreneurship? Third, are they connected with other established research areas? Finally, it is possible to identify papers that are influential, acting as hubs in the clusters formation? Method: We developed an original version of the computational procedure proposed by Shibata et al (2008), which allows us to understand the diversity of the different sub-areas of the topic investigated, reducing the need for specialist supervision. Originality / Relevance: We developed and applied a method to capture the formation and evolution of research areas in entrepreneurship literature, via direct citation networks, allowing us to understand the iteration between the different research sub-areas. Results: The dispersion is a feature of entrepreneurship as field research, with a hierarchy between research areas, indicating an emergent organization in the expansion processes. We concluded that research on entrepreneurship consists of specialization, that is, by application in niches.</jats:p
