    Decorrelation of User Defined Function Invocations in Queries

    Queries containing user-defined functions (UDFs) are widely used, since they allow queries to be written using a mix of imperative language constructs and SQL, thereby increasing the expressive power of SQL; further, they encourage modularity, and make queries easier to understand. However, not much attention has been paid to their optimization, except for simple UDFs without imperative constructs. Queries invoking UDFs with imperative constructs are executed using iterative invocation of the UDFs, leading to poor performance, especially if the UDF contains queries. Such poor execution has been a major deterrent to the wider usage of complex UDFs

    A Clinical Study of Jalaukavacharana in Varicose Eczema (Vicharchika)

    In adolescents varicose eczema is a common skin condition encountered by general practitioners and dermatologists in day today clinical practices. Varicose eczema is the condition usually present secondary to varicosity of superficial veins. For this condition there is no successful surgery as well as medical remedy available for the complete cure. However in Ayurveda, Jalaukavacharana (Leech therapy) as a parasurgical method is useful in this condition. Leech is used for the bloodletting at that particular site. With this background a study has been conducted to compare the effect of Jalaukavacharana without and with internal medications, Two groups were done as Group-A and Group-B, each with 15 patients. Jalaukavacharana was done at eczema in Group-A for four time with an interval of seven days that is, on day 1, day 7, day 14 and day 21 with internal medication. In Group B only internal medication is given. The pre and post therapeutic subjective and objective criteria were recorded. All data were analyzed clinically as well as statistically. In both Group-A and Group-B. Jalaukavacharana has shown good result in reducing the symptoms of varicose eczema (Vicharchika)

    Comparison of two linearization schemes for the nonlinear bending problem of a beam pinned at both ends

    The nonlinear bending problem of a constant cross-section simply supported beam pinned at both ends and subject to a uniformly distributed load qðxÞ is analyzed in detail. The numerical integration of the two-point boundary value problem (BVP) derived for the nonlinear Timoshenko beam is tackled through two different linearization schemes, the multi-step transversal linearization (MTrL) and the multi-step tangential linearization (MTnL), proposed by Viswanath and Roy (2007). The fundamentals of these linearization techniques are to replace the nonlinear part of the governing ODEs through a set of conditionally linearized ODE systems at the nodal grid points along the neutral axis, ensuring the intersection between the solution manifolds (transversally in the MTrL and tangentially in the MTnL). In this paper, the solution values are determined at grid points by means of a centered finite differences method with multipoint linear constraints (Keller, 1969), and a simple iterative strategy. The analytical solution for this kind of bending problem, including the extensional effects, can be worked out by integration of the governing two-point BVP equations (Monleón et al., 2008). Finally, the comparison of analytical and numerical results shows the better ability of MTnL with the proposed iterative strategy to reproduce the theoretical behavior of the beam for each load step, because the restraint of equating derivatives in MTnL leads to further closeness between solution paths of the governing ODEs and the linearized ones, in comparison with MTrL. This result is opposed to the conclusion reached in Viswanath and Roy (2007), where the relative errors produced by MTrL are said to be smaller than the MTnL ones for the simply supported beam and the tip-loaded cantilever beam problems. 2009 Elsevier Ltd.     High-pressure behavior of superconducting boron-doped diamond

    This work investigates the high-pressure structure of freestanding superconducting (TcT_{c} = 4.3\,K) boron doped diamond (BDD) and how it affects the electronic and vibrational properties using Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction in the 0-30\,GPa range. High-pressure Raman scattering experiments revealed an abrupt change in the linear pressure coefficients and the grain boundary components undergo an irreversible phase change at 14\,GPa. We show that the blue shift in the pressure-dependent vibrational modes correlates with the negative pressure coefficient of TcT_{c} in BDD. The analysis of x-ray diffraction data determines the equation of state of the BDD film, revealing a high bulk modulus of B0B_{0}=510±\pm28\,GPa. The comparative analysis of high-pressure data clarified that the sp2^{2} carbons in the grain boundaries transform into hexagonal diamond.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

    Magnetostructural and magnetocaloric properties of bulk LaCrO3 system

    We studied the magnetic properties of bulk LaCrO3; a GdFeO3-type distorted perovskite, with a predominant antiferromagnetic phase transition at ~ 290 K. The bulk LaCrO3 exhibits intrinsic weak ferromagnetism at room temperature, which may arise due to the tilting of CrO6 octahedra, resulting in a non-zero net magnetic moment, as confirmed from the magnetization measurements. A broad magnetically-induced entropy change (-{\Delta}S) is observed with the maximum at 290 K, close to room temperature in LaCrO3 system.Comment: 13 Pages and 3 Figures Submitted to the Journal Physics Letter A on 15 March 201

    Inheritance patterns, consanguinity & risk for asthma

    Background & Objectives: Family history is an important risk factor for the development of asthma, contingent upon genetic and environment interaction. Since there is paucity of data on asthma inheritance in Indian population, the present study was undertaken to investigate the inheritance patterns of asthma and the effect of family history and consanguineous marriage on asthma inheritance. Methods: A total of 200 families, 100 index children and 100 index adults with clinically diagnosed asthma, along with 400 non-asthmatic children and adults as controls were selected for the present study. Information about the family history of each patients and controls was collected and analyzed pedigrees were also constructed. Results: A history of asthma in any member of the family was observed in 44.5 per cent of cases and 5.3 per cent of controls (P<0.001). A differential risk of developing asthma was noted in family history of asthma in different first and second degree relatives of children and adult patients. Consanguineous marriage was also noted in parents in 24.5 per cent of cases and 12.3 per cent of controls (P<0.001). The most common mode of asthma inheritance was recessive. Interpretation & Conclusions: Our results showed that consanguineous marriage and family history of asthma are important determinants in the development of asthma in the offspring

    Growth and reproductive parameters of bonnet monkey (Macaca radiata)

    The present paper summarizes some of the important biological and physiological data recorded over a 30-year period on the biology of bonnet monkeys in captivity. Data on sexual maturity, menstrual cyclicity, general behaviour, endocrine profile, reproductive physiology, gestation, parturition, postpartum amenorrhoea in the female, and sexual maturity, hormone profile, and seasonal variation in sperm count of the male monkeys are presented. In addition to the biological values, weights of selected organs, vertebral and dental pattern are also presented. Menarche occurred at an age of 36±4 months and the first conception in the colony occurred at an age of 54±4 months. The average menstrual cycle length was 28±4.3 days. Majority of monkeys did not cycle regularly during March-June during which the temperature reached a peak. The pregnancy index of the colony was 80% with controlled breeding. The gestation period was 166±5 days with 6-7 months postpartum amenorrhoea. Males attained sexual maturity by the age of 6-7 years and exhibited the characteristic nocturnal surge of serum testosterone at this age and sperm concentration ranged from 116-799 millions/ejaculate

    A study on growth, instability and direction of chilli trade in India

    This study was aimed at studying growth, instability in area, production and productivity and direction of trade of chilli from India. Compound growth rate analysis, Instability analysis and Markov chain analytical tools were used for the study. The results indicated that the growth in area under chilli was negative, while production showed increasing growth due to increased productivity. The sources of instability in chilli production were found to be change in area variance and change in yield variance. Malaysia, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates and Indonesia were found to be the loyal markets for Indian chillies. The influence of export price and production on the changes in export of chilli was positive, but the influence of domestic price was negative. &nbsp

    A multimodal spectroscopy system for real-time disease diagnosis

    The combination of reflectance, fluorescence, and Raman spectroscopy—termed multimodal spectroscopy (MMS)—provides complementary and depth-sensitive information about tissue composition. As such, MMS is a promising tool for disease diagnosis, particularly in atherosclerosis and breast cancer. We have developed an integrated MMS instrument and optical fiber spectral probe for simultaneous collection of all three modalities in a clinical setting. The MMS instrument multiplexes three excitation sources, a xenon flash lamp (370–740 nm), a nitrogen laser (337 nm), and a diode laser (830 nm), through the MMS probe to excite tissue and collect the spectra. The spectra are recorded on two spectrograph/charge-coupled device modules, one optimized for visible wavelengths (reflectance and fluorescence) and the other for the near-infrared (Raman), and processed to provide diagnostic parameters. We also describe the design and calibration of a unitary MMS optical fiber probe 2 mm in outer diameter, containing a single appropriately filtered excitation fiber and a ring of 15 collection fibers, with separate groups of appropriately filtered fibers for efficiently collecting reflectance, fluorescence, and Raman spectra from the same tissue location. A probe with this excitation/collection geometry has not been used previously to collect reflectance and fluorescence spectra, and thus physical tissue models (“phantoms”) are used to characterize the probe’s spectroscopic response. This calibration provides probe-specific modeling parameters that enable accurate extraction of spectral parameters.
