Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics of Fermion Lattice Systems
We study equilibrium statistical mechanics of Fermion lattice systems which
require a different treatment compared with spin lattice systems due to the
non-commutativity of local algebras for disjoint regions.
Our major result is the equivalence of the KMS condition and the variational
principle with a minimal assumption for the dynamics and without any explicit
assumption on the potential. It holds also for spin lattice systems as well,
yielding a vast improvement over known results.
All formulations are in terms of a C*-dynamical systems for the Fermion (CAR)
algebra with all or a part of the following assumptions:
(I) The interaction is even with respect to the Fermion number.
(Automatically satisfied when (IV) below is assumed.)
(II) All strictly local elements of the algebra have the first time
derivative.
(III) The time derivatives in (II) determine the dynamics.
(IV) The interaction is lattice translation invariant.
A major technical tool is the conditional expectation from the total algebra
onto the local subalgebra for any finite subset of the lattice, which induces a
system of commuting squares. This technique overcomes the lack of tensor
product structures for Fermion systems and even simplifies many known arguments

Site-selective silicon adatom desorption using femtosecond laser pulse pairs and scanning tunneling microscopy
We performed an experimental study of silicon adatom desorption from the Si~111!-737 surfaceusing femtosecond laser pulse pair excitation with 80 fs pulse duration, 800 nm center wavelength,300 mW average power, and a 100 MHz repetition rate. Using scanning tunneling microscopy, wedirectly recorded the desorption characteristics at each delay setting for each of the four adatombinding sites. The study revealed a preferential dependence between the delay time and the adatomsites within a 66.6–1000 fs delay range

The existence problem for dynamics of dissipative systems in quantum probability
Motivated by existence problems for dissipative systems arising naturally in
lattice models from quantum statistical mechanics, we consider the following

Evidence for Bound Entangled States with Negative Partial Transpose
We exhibit a two-parameter family of bipartite mixed states , in a
Hilbert space, which are negative under partial transposition
(NPT), but for which we conjecture that no maximally entangled pure states in
can be distilled by local quantum operations and classical
communication (LQ+CC). Evidence for this undistillability is provided by the
result that, for certain states in this family, we cannot extract entanglement
from any arbitrarily large number of copies of using a projection
on . These states are canonical NPT states in the sense that any
bipartite mixed state in any dimension with NPT can be reduced by LQ+CC
operations to an NPT state of the form. We show that the main
question about the distillability of mixed states can be formulated as an open

Near visual function measured with a novel tablet application in patients with astigmatism
Clinical relevance: While the clinical focus of performance metrics is traditionally based on visual acuity, research from the field of visual impairment has demonstrated that metrics such as reading speed and critical print size correlate much more strongly with subjective patient reported outcomes and assessed ability in real-world tasks. Background: More recently, digital device use has increasingly replaced many paper-based tasks. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the correlation between standard acuity/contrast metrics and functional reading ability compared to real-world performance on an iPad-based reading task with astigmatic patients corrected wearing toric and mean spherical equivalent contact lenses. Methods: Thirty-four adult participants, with −0.75 to −1.50 D of refractive astigmatism, were enrolled in a double-masked cross-over study and fitted with toric and spherical equivalent contact lenses, in random order. A digital application was developed to assess zoom, contrast modifications, the distance at which the tablet was held, blink rate, and time to complete the reading task. High and low contrast near logMAR visual acuity were measured along with reading performance (critical print size and optimal reading speed). Results: The amount participants chose to increase tablet font size (zoom) was correlated with their high-contrast visual acuity with toric correction (r = 0.434, p = 0.010). With best sphere correction, zoom was associated with reading speed (r = −0.450, p = 0.008) and working distance (r = 0.522, p = 0.002). Text zoom was also associated with horizontal (toric: r = 0.898, p < 0.001; sphere: r = 0.880, p < 0.001) and vertical scrolling (toric: r = 0.857, p < 0.001; sphere: r = 0.846, p < 0.001). There was a significant negative association between the selection of text contrast and zoom (toric: r = −0.417, p = 0.0141; sphere: r = −0.385, p = 0.025). Conclusion: Real-world task performance allows more robust assessment of visual function than standard visual metrics alone. Digital technology offers the opportunity to better understand the impact of different vision correction options on real-world task performance
HIV-1/HSV-2 Co-Infected Adults in Early HIV-1 Infection Have Elevated CD4+ T Cell Counts
Introduction. HIV-1 is often acquired in the presence of pre-existing co-infections, such as Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (HSV-2). We examined the impact of HSV-2 status at the time of HIV-1 acquisition for its impact on subsequent clinical course, and total CD4+ T cell phenotypes. Methods. We assessed the relationship of HSV-1/HSV-2 co-infection status on CD4+ T cell counts and HIV-1 RNA levels over time prior in a cohort of 186 treatment naive adults identified during early HIV-1 infection. We assessed the activation and differentiation state of total CD4+ T cells at study entry by HSV-2 status. Results. of 186 recently HIV-1 infected persons, 101 (54%) were sero-positive for HSV-2. There was no difference in initial CD8+ T cell count, or differences between the groups for age, gender, or race based on HSV-2 status. Persons with HIV-1/HSV-2 co-infection sustained higher CD4+ T cell counts over time (+69 cells/ul greater (SD = 33.7, p = 0.04) than those with HIV-1 infection alone (Figure 1), after adjustment for HIV-1 RNA levels (-57 cells per 1 log(10) higher HIV-1 RNA, p<0.0001). We did not observe a relationship between HSV-2 infection status with plasma HIV-1 RNA levels over time. HSV-2 acquistion after HIV-1 acquisition had no impact on CD4+ count or viral load. We did not detect differences in CD4+ T cell activation or differentiation state by HSV-2+ status. Discussion. We observed no effect of HSV-2 status on viral load. However, we did observe that treatment naive, recently HIV-1 infected adults co-infected with HSV-2+ at the time of HIV-1 acquisition had higher CD4+ T cell counts over time. A manufacturing framework for capability-based product-service systems design
Manufacturers aim to design product-service systems (PSS) which integrate services with products to attain sustained competitive advantage from a life cycle perspective. PSS design should be customer-adjusted solutions which are aligned to integrated stakeholders' capabilities, a subject which the extant literature has not sufficiently addressed. This paper proposes a systematic framework for the PSS solution provider to address this aim and operationalizes this through software developed for PSS design which models stakeholders' individual activities and simulates their occurrences depending on their relations. The framework stresses that integrated stakeholders' capabilities define continuing ability to generate a desired operational outcome for the customers. The paper reports a PSS design case for a laser system manufacturer and then applies the framework to it. The industrial experts' views on this framework reveal that it helps to develop PSS design from a holistic systems approach which facilitates a change in the designer's mindset from product-centric to systems-centric. The level of trust and transparency required for this framework is argued to be absent in most industrial sectors, being one of the foremost limitations for implementation of PSS
