Effect of Feronia elephantum (Corr) Fruit Pulp Extract on Indomethacin-induced Gastric Ulcer in Albino Rats
Purpose: To investigate the activity of Feronia elephantum fruit pulp extract (which is used in folk medicine) against indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer in rats. Methods: The fruit pulp was extracted with ethanol and the anti-ulcer activity of the extract in indomethacin-induced gastric ulceration in Swiss albino rats was evaluated. The parameters assessed were pH and acid concentration of gastric contents, and gastric ulcer index. Ranitidine was used as the reference anti-ulcer drug. Acute toxicity studies were also carried out. Results: The extract (500 mg/kg, p.o.) inhibited indomethacin-induced gastric ulceration by decreasing acid concentration of gastric fluid while elevating its pH (p < 0.01), and compared well with the standard drug, ranitidine (p < 0.001). However, its anti-ulcer activity was not as potent as that of ranitidine. Acute toxicity studies showed thatthere was no mortality following the administration of the extract in a dose range of 250 - 5000 mg/kg, p.o. Conclusion: Feronia elephantum fruit pulp extract has potent antiulcer activity with low toxicity. Its anti-ulcer property probably acts via a reduction in gastric acid secretion. Comparative trends of accidental to intentional mortalities over a one-year period at a tertiary care centre
Background: The trends of deaths due to unnatural incidents are on the rise each year throughout the world, including India. Incremental trends have been observed in all mortalities throughout the country. Although all these mortalities seem preventable, yet not much has been achieved over the years. Intentional mortalities are yet more preventable as compared to non intentional ones. The trends of unnatural deaths were observed at a tertiary care centre of the capital city of Rajasthan to determine the comparative magnitude of such fatalities to predict possible reasons for them.Methods: An observational study was carried out for a one year period (2013-14) at the Department of Forensic Medicine of an apex institution of the capital metropolitan city to determine the comparative trends of accidental to suicidal and homicidal deaths amongst the medico-legal autopsies carried out over the study period. The results were analysed to look into the probable reasons for these preventable deaths.Results: Accidental fatalities contributed maximally followed by suicides and homicides. All types of unnatural deaths were more commonly observed in young adult male population. Road accidents were the major offenders followed by thermal injuries and falls. Intentional fatalities due to self harm or other human beings shared a considerable burden among unexpected mortalities over the study region.Conclusions: Majority of the reported fatalities were preventable deaths occurring amongst the active and productive population and hence, it is of utmost importance to analyse such deaths to suggest remedial measures bring down the toll of such causalities
A molecular approach to reveal the genetic identity of parrot mussel and other sympatric mussel species distributed along the Kerala coast
Two commercially important mussel species are recorded from the Indian coast: green mussel Perna
viridis (Linnaeus, 1758) and brown mussel P. indica (Kuriakose and Nair, 1976). Apart from this, a
third type referred to as parrot mussel, which has shell shape of brown mussel, but with green shell
colouration and suspected to be the hybrid of the above two species has also been reported from Kollam
coast of Kerala, where both the species co-occur. In the present work, genetic identity of parrot and
sympatric mussel species was determined using protein and genomic DNA markers. Protein markers
viz. Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and allozymes and
the genomic DNA marker Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) were used for determining
genetic identity of the three mussel groups. The green and brown mussels could be clearly differentiated
using SDS PAGE. The parrot mussel protein pattern was similar to that of brown mussel, except for
an additional band of molecular weight 48.7 Kda which is unique to brown mussel. Genus specific
protein bands for Perna viz. 66 Kda, 43 Kda and 14.3 Kda, were detected in this study. Allozyme
electrophoresis also followed a similar pattern. Of the 10 allozyme loci studied, seven revealed speciesspecific
diagnostic differences between P.viridis and P.indica. They were AAT-1* (Aspartate Amino
Transferase-1*), AAT-2*, ME (Malic Enzyme)*, PGM-2*(Phospo Gluco Mutase-2*), EST-1* (Esterase-
1*), EST-2*, IcDH* (Isocitrate Dehydrogenase)*. Parrot mussel shared all the alleles of brown mussel,
and no hybrid pattern was observed. Species-specific alleles clearly differentiated green mussel from
both brown and parrot mussel. The genetic distance of green mussel from brown mussel, estimated
from allozyme data was 1.1145 and with parrot mussel it was 1.105. The genetic distance between
parrot mussel and brown mussel was negligibly low (0.0005). Using allozyme and RAPD data, the
Nei’s Unbiased Measures of genetic distance were calculated and the dendograms prepared based on
these values clearly depicted the separation of parrot mussel from green mussel as well as the close
resemblance of parrot mussel with brown mussel. The higher gene flow (1.1539) determined using
RAPD marker also hints that brown and parrot mussel may be acting as single interbreeding population.
Hence this study using molecular tools to test the genetic identity of parrot mussel has helped to
conclude that parrot mussel is only a morphotype of brown mussel and not a true hybrid of the two

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) seed : a review on bioactives and biomedical activities
The processing of tomato fruit into puree, juices, ketchup, sauces, and dried powders generates a significant amount of waste in the form of tomato pomace, which includes seeds and skin. Tomato processing by-products, particularly seeds, are reservoirs of health-promoting macromolecules, such as proteins (bioactive peptides), carotenoids (lycopene), polysaccharides (pectin), phytochemicals (flavonoids), and vitamins (α-tocopherol). Health-promoting properties make these bioactive components suitable candidates for the development of novel food and nutraceutical products. This review comprehensively demonstrates the bioactive compounds of tomato seeds along with diverse biomedical activities of tomato seed extract (TSE) for treating cardiovascular ailments, neurological disorders, and act as antioxidant, anticancer, and antimicrobial agent. Utilization of bioactive components can improve the economic feasibility of the tomato processing industry and may help to reduce the environmental pollution generated by tomato by-products
Prospective Association of Daily Steps with Cardiovascular Disease: A Harmonized Meta-Analysis
Background:
Taking fewer than the widely promoted “10 000 steps per day” has recently been associated with lower risk of all-cause mortality. The relationship of steps and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk remains poorly described. A meta-analysis examining the dose–response relationship between steps per day and CVD can help inform clinical and public health guidelines.
Methods:
Eight prospective studies (20 152 adults [ie, ≥18 years of age]) were included with device-measured steps and participants followed for CVD events. Studies quantified steps per day and CVD events were defined as fatal and nonfatal coronary heart disease, stroke, and heart failure. Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were completed using study-specific quartiles and hazard ratios (HR) and 95% CI were meta-analyzed with inverse-variance–weighted random effects models.
Results:
The mean age of participants was 63.2±12.4 years and 52% were women. The mean follow-up was 6.2 years (123 209 person-years), with a total of 1523 CVD events (12.4 per 1000 participant-years) reported. There was a significant difference in the association of steps per day and CVD between older (ie, ≥60 years of age) and younger adults (ie, <60 years of age). For older adults, the HR for quartile 2 was 0.80 (95% CI, 0.69 to 0.93), 0.62 for quartile 3 (95% CI, 0.52 to 0.74), and 0.51 for quartile 4 (95% CI, 0.41 to 0.63) compared with the lowest quartile. For younger adults, the HR for quartile 2 was 0.79 (95% CI, 0.46 to 1.35), 0.90 for quartile 3 (95% CI, 0.64 to 1.25), and 0.95 for quartile 4 (95% CI, 0.61 to 1.48) compared with the lowest quartile. Restricted cubic splines demonstrated a nonlinear association whereby more steps were associated with decreased risk of CVD among older adults.
Conclusions:
For older adults, taking more daily steps was associated with a progressively decreased risk of CVD. Monitoring and promoting steps per day is a simple metric for clinician–patient communication and population health to reduce the risk of CVD
Dopamine Beta Hydroxylase Genotype Identifies Individuals Less Susceptible to Bias in Computer-Assisted Decision Making
Computerized aiding systems can assist human decision makers in complex tasks but can impair performance when they provide incorrect advice that humans erroneously follow, a phenomenon known as “automation bias.” The extent to which people exhibit automation bias varies significantly and may reflect inter-individual variation in the capacity of working memory and the efficiency of executive function, both of which are highly heritable and under dopaminergic and noradrenergic control in prefrontal cortex. The dopamine beta hydroxylase (DBH) gene is thought to regulate the differential availability of dopamine and norepinephrine in prefrontal cortex. We therefore examined decision-making performance under imperfect computer aiding in 100 participants performing a simulated command and control task. Based on two single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) of the DBH gene, −1041 C/T (rs1611115) and 444 G/A (rs1108580), participants were divided into groups of low and high DBH enzyme activity, where low enzyme activity is associated with greater dopamine relative to norepinephrine levels in cortex. Compared to those in the high DBH enzyme activity group, individuals in the low DBH enzyme activity group were more accurate and speedier in their decisions when incorrect advice was given and verified automation recommendations more frequently. These results indicate that a gene that regulates relative prefrontal cortex dopamine availability, DBH, can identify those individuals who are less susceptible to bias in using computerized decision-aiding systems
Use of industrial wastes as sustainable nutrient sources for bacterial cellulose (BC) production: mechanism, advances, and future perspectives
A novel nanomaterial, bacterial cellulose (BC), has become noteworthy recently due to its better physicochemical properties and biodegradability, which are desirable for various applications. Since cost is a significant limitation in the production of cellulose, current efforts are focused on the use of industrial waste as a cost-effective substrate for the synthesis of BC or microbial cellulose. The utilization of industrial wastes and byproduct streams as fermentation media could improve the cost-competitiveness of BC production. This paper examines the feasibility of using typical wastes generated by industry sectors as sources of nutrients (carbon and nitrogen) for the commercial- scale production of BC. Numerous preliminary findings in the literature data have revealed the potential to yield a high concentration of BC from various industrial wastes. These findings indicated the need to optimize culture conditions, aiming for improved large-scale production of BC from waste streams
Cognitive resources moderate the adverse impact of poor perceived neighborhood conditions on self-reported physical activity of older adults
Rebar, A ORCiD: 0000-0003-3164-993XPoor neighborhood conditions are associated with lower levels of physical activity for older adults but socio-ecological models posit that physical activity depends on both environmental and individual factors. Older adults' ability to overcome environmental barriers to physical activity may partially rely on cognitive resources. However, evidence on the moderating role of these cognitive resources in the associations between environmental barriers and physical activity is still lacking. We analyzed cross-national and longitudinal data on 28,393 adults aged 50 to 96 years as part of the SHARE. Lack of access to services and neighborhood nuisances were used as indicators of poor neighborhood conditions. Delayed recall and verbal fluency were used as indicators of cognitive resources. Confounder-adjusted generalized estimation equations were conducted to test associations between neighborhood conditions and self-reported moderate physical activity, as well as the moderating role of cognitive resources. Results showed that poor neighborhood conditions reduced the odds of engagement in physical activity. Cognitive resources robustly reduced the adverse influence of poor neighborhood conditions on physical activity. Participants with lower cognitive resource scores showed lower odds of engaging in physical activity when neighborhood conditions were poorer, whereas these conditions were not related to this engagement for participants with higher cognitive resource scores. These findings suggest that cognitive resources can temper the detrimental effect of poor neighborhood conditions on physical activity. Public policies should target both individual and environmental factors to tackle the current pandemic of physical inactivity more comprehensively. © 2019 Elsevier Inc
