Dispersion Entropy: A Measure of Electrohysterographic Complexity for Preterm Labor Discrimination

[EN] Although preterm labor is a major cause of neonatal death and often leaves health sequels in the survivors, there are no accurate and reliable clinical tools for preterm labor prediction. The Electrohysterogram (EHG) has arisen as a promising alternative that provides relevant information on uterine activity that could be useful in predicting preterm labor. In this work, we optimized and assessed the performance of the Dispersion Entropy (DispEn) metric and compared it to conventional Sample Entropy (SampEn) in EHG recordings to discriminate term from preterm deliveries. For this, we used the two public databases TPEHG and TPEHGT DS of EHG recordings collected from women during regular checkups. The 10th, 50th and 90th percentiles of entropy metrics were computed on whole (WBW) and fast wave high (FWH) EHG bandwidths, sweeping the DispEn and SampEn internal parameters to optimize term/preterm discrimination. The results revealed that for both the FWH and WBW bandwidths the best separability was reached when computing the 10th percentile, achieving a p-value (0.00007) for DispEn in FWH, c = 7 and m = 2, associated with lower complexity preterm deliveries, indicating that DispEn is a promising parameter for preterm labor prediction. This work was supported by the Spanish ministry of economy and competitiveness, the European Regional Development Fund (MCIU/AEI/FEDER, UE RTI2018-094449-A-I00-AR) and the Generalitat Valenciana (AICO/2019/220).Nieto-Del-Amor, F.; Ye Lin, Y.; Garcia-Casado, J.; Díaz-Martínez, MDA.; González Martínez, M.; Monfort-Ortiz, R.; Prats-Boluda, G. Health on the Move (HOME) Study: Using a smartphone app to explore the health and wellbeing of migrants in the United Kingdom [version 1; peer review: 2 approved]

    Get PDF
Background/Aim: We have a limited understanding of the broader determinants of health of international migrants and how these change over time since migration to the United Kingdom (UK). To address this knowledge gap, we aim to conduct a prospective cohort study with data acquisition via a smartphone application (app). In this pilot study, we aim to 1) determine the feasibility of the use of an app for data collection in international migrants, 2) optimise app engagement by quantifying the impact of specific design features on the completion rates of survey questionnaires and on study retention, 3) gather preliminary profile health status data, to begin to examine how risk factors for health are distributed among migrants. / Methods: We will recruit 275 participants through a social media campaign and through third sector organisations that work with or support migrants in the UK. Following consent and registration, data will be collected via surveys. To optimise app engagement and study retention, we will quantify the impact of specific design features (i.e. the frequency of survey requests, the time of day for app notifications, the frequency of notifications, and the wording of notifications) via micro-randomised process evaluations. The primary outcome for this study is survey completion rates with numerator as the number of surveys completed and denominator as the total number of available surveys. Secondary outcomes are study retention rates and ratings of interest after app usage. / Ethics and dissemination: We have obtained approval to use consented patient identifiable data from the University College London Ethics Committee. Improving engagement with the app and gathering preliminary health profile data will help us identify accessibility and usability issues and other barriers to app and study engagement prior to moving to a larger study

This article is a part of a wider research on secondary science teachers' beliefs. Through the use of a questionnaire data were obtained from 103 secondary science teachers in service with different degrees of experience. Analysis of data are discussed in terms of their implication in teacher training in service

    The Proof-of-Concept of MBA121, a Tacrine–Ferulic Acid Hybrid, for Alzheimer’s Disease Therapy

    Get PDF
Great effort has been devoted to the synthesis of novel multi-target directed tacrine derivatives in the search of new treatments for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Herein we describe the proof of concept of MBA121, a compound designed as a tacrine–ferulic acid hybrid, and its potential use in the therapy of AD. MBA121 shows good β-amyloid (Aβ) anti-aggregation properties, selective inhibition of human butyrylcholinesterase, good neuroprotection against toxic insults, such as Aβ1–40, Aβ1–42, and H2O2, and promising ADMET properties that support translational developments. A passive avoidance task in mice with experimentally induced amnesia was carried out, MBA121 being able to significantly decrease scopolamine-induced learning deficits. In addition, MBA121 reduced the Aβ plaque burden in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus in APPswe/PS1ΔE9 transgenic male mice. Our in vivo results relate its bioavailability with the therapeutic response, demonstrating that MBA121 is a promising agent to treat the cognitive decline and neurodegeneration underlying AD

The study of the specimens of genus Impatientinum Mordvilko, 1914 from the collection générale d’aphides del Muséum national d’Historie naturelle, Paris (France) and the Colección de Aphididae de México at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México has allowed to establish 3 species: I. chiriquense n. sp. (with the description of the apterous and alate females) from Panama, I. holmani n. sp. (with the description of the apterous and alate females and males) and I. oaxacense n. sp. (with the description of the apterae) from México. The viviparous alate females of I. americanum are described and knowledge of the apterous females of this species is improved. The generic position of the American species of Impatientinum is discussed.

Spatio-temporal variability of droughts in Bolivia: 1955-2012

    Get PDF
In this study, the spatio-temporal variability and trends of droughts across Bolivia between 1955 and 2012 were investigated using two climate drought indices: the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), which is based on precipitation data, and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), which is based on the difference between the precipitation and the reference evapotranspiration (ETo). We found that the average drought conditions across the country showed a temporal behaviour mainly characterized by decadal variations. The spatial pattern of drought evolution showed marked differences between the Amazonian region and the Bolivian Altiplano. Both regions showed different drought periods, a lower frequency of drought variability in the Amazon region and trends towards drier conditions in the Altiplano, mainly due to a higher atmospheric water demand as a consequence of increased ETo. We also showed that inclusion of ETo, obtained from maximum and minimum temperature records, increased the spatial heterogeneity of the drought evolution in relation to the evolution observed when only precipitation droughts were considered. The SPEI, the calculation of which includes precipitation and ETo, indicated intensification in drought severity in the last years analysed relative to the pattern found when precipitation droughts alone were considered, and also indicated an increase in the magnitude and duration of drought events. The potential for increasing drought conditions under various climate change scenarios is discussed. © 2015 Royal Meteorological Society. This work has been supported by research projects I-COOP H2O 2013CD0006: ‘Test multisectorial y actividades demostrativa sobre el potencial desarrollo de sistemas de monitorización de sequías en tiempo real en la región del oeste de Sudamérica’ financed by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), CGL2011-27574-CO2-02 financed by the Spanish Commission of Science and Technology and FEDER, ‘Demonstration and validation of innovative methodology for regional climate change adaptation in the Mediterranean area (LIFE MEDACC)’ financed by the LIFE programme of the European Commission, C.A.-M. received a postdoctoral fellowship # JCI-2011-10263.
