Small and orthodox fiscal multipliers at the zero lower bound
Does fiscal policy have large and qualitatively different effects on the economy when the nominal interest rate is zero? An emerging consensus in the New Keynesian literature is that the answer is yes. New evidence provided here suggests that the answer is often no. For a broad range of empirically relevant parameterizations of the Rotemberg model of costly price adjustment, the government purchase multiplier is about one or less, and the response of hours to a tax cut is either negative or close to zero
New Keynesian Dynamics in a Low Interest Rate Environment
Recent research has found that the dynamics of the New Keynesian model are very different when the nominal interest rate is zero. Improvements in technology shocks and reductions in the labor tax rate lower economic activity and the size of the government purchase multiplier can be as large as four. We consider the empirical relevance of these dynamics using Japanese data. Japan is interesting because it experienced a protracted period of zero nominal interest rates. A prototypical New Keynesian model calibrated to Japan and solved using nonlinear methods exhibits orthodox dynamics with a government purchase multiplier that is less than one.Government purchases, zero nominal interest rates, monetary policy

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of blue wavelength light exposure on sleep and recovery of brain structure, function, and cognition following mild traumatic brain injury.
Sleep and circadian rhythms are among the most powerful but least understood contributors to cognitive performance and brain health. Here we capitalize on the circadian resetting effect of blue-wavelength light to phase shift the sleep patterns of adult patients (aged 18-48 years) recovering from mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), with the aim of facilitating recovery of brain structure, connectivity, and cognitive performance. During a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 32 adults with a recent mTBI, we compared 6-weeks of daily 30-min pulses of blue light (peak lambda = 469 nm) each morning versus amber placebo light (peak lambda= 578 nm) on neurocognitive and neuroimaging outcomes, including gray matter volume (GMV), resting-state functional connectivity, directed connectivity using Granger causality, and white matter integrity using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Relative to placebo, morning blue light led to phase-advanced sleep timing, reduced daytime sleepiness, and improved executive functioning, and was associated with increased volume of the posterior thalamus (i.e., pulvinar), greater thalamo-cortical functional connectivity, and increased axonal integrity of these pathways. These findings provide insight into the contributions of the circadian and sleep systems in brain repair and lay the groundwork for interventions targeting the retinohypothalamic system to facilitate injury recovery.Open access articleThis item from the UA Faculty Publications collection is made available by the University of Arizona with support from the University of Arizona Libraries. Walnut Allergy Across Europe: Distribution of Allergen Sensitization Patterns and Prediction of Severity
Background: Walnut allergy is common across the globe, but data on the involvement of individual walnut components are scarce.
Objectives: To identify geographical differences in walnut component sensitization across Europe, explore cosensitization and cross-reactivity, and assess associations of clinical and serological determinants with severity of walnut allergy.
Methods: As part of the EuroPrevall outpatient surveys in 12 European cities, standardized clinical evaluation was conducted in 531 individuals reporting symptoms to walnut, with sensitization to all known walnut components assessed in 202 subjects. Multivariable Lasso regression was applied to investigate predictors for walnut allergy severity.
Results: Birch-pollen-related walnut sensitization (Jug r 5) dominated in Northern and Central Europe and lipid transfer protein sensitization (Jug r 3) in Southern Europe. Profilin sensitization (Jug r 7) was prominent throughout Europe. Sensitization to storage proteins (Jug r 1, 2, 4, and 6) was detected in up to 10% of subjects. The walnut components that showed strong correlations with pollen and other foods differed between centers. The combination of determinants best predicting walnut allergy severity were symptoms upon skin contact with walnut, atopic dermatitis (ever), family history of atopic disease, mugwort pollen allergy, sensitization to cat or dog, positive skin prick test result to walnut, and IgE to Jug r 1, 5, 7, or carbohydrate determinants (area under the curve = 0.81; 95% CI, 0.73-0.89).
Conclusions: Walnut-allergic subjects across Europe show clear geographical differences in walnut component sensitization and cosensitization patterns. Relaxation lifetimes of plasmonically enhanced hybrid gold-carbon nanotubes systems
Recently, we introduced a novel hybridization route for carbon nanotubes using
gold nanoparticles, whose close proximity neatly enhances their radiative
emission. Here we investigate the mechanisms behind the enhancement by
monitoring the de-excitation dynamics of our Ï-hybrids through two-color pump-
probe time-resolved spectroscopy. The de-excitation process reveals a fast
component and a slow component. We find that the presence of gold prominently
affects the fast processes, indicating a stronger influence of the gold
nanoparticle on the intra-band non-radiative relaxation than on the inter-band
recombination of the single-walled carbon nanotube. By evaluating the de-
excitation times, we estimate the balance between near-field pumping and the
faster metal-induced de-excitation contributions, proving the enhanced pumping
to be the leading mechanism

Evidence presented here suggests that the NK modelŚłs implications for fiscal policy at the zero bound may not be all that different from its implications for policy away from it. For a range of empirically relevant parameterizations, employment increases when the labor tax rate is cut and the government purchase multiplier is less than 1.05
Local charge and spin currents in magnetothermal landscapes
A scannable laser beam is used to generate local thermal gradients in
metallic (Co2FeAl) or insulating (Y3Fe5O12) ferromagnetic thin films. We study
the resulting local charge and spin currents that arise due to the anomalous
Nernst effect (ANE) and the spin Seebeck effect (SSE), respectively. In the
local ANE experiments, we detect the voltage in the Co2FeAl thin film plane as
a function of the laser spot position and external magnetic field magnitude and
orientation. The local SSE effect is detected in a similar fashion by
exploiting the inverse spin Hall effect in a Pt layer deposited on top of the
Y3Fe5O12. Our findings establish local thermal spin and charge current
generation as well as spin caloritronic domain imaging

Public attitudes toward stuttering in Europe: within-country and between-country comparisons
Introduction: Epidemiological research methods have been shown to be useful in determining factors that might predict commonly reported negative public attitudes toward stuttering. Previous research has suggested that stuttering attitudes of respondents from North America and Europe (i.e., âThe Westâ), though characterized by stereotypes and potential stigma, are more positive than those from several other regions of the world. This inference assumes that public attitudes within various regions characterized by âThe Westâ are similar.
Purpose:
This study aimed to determine the extent to which public stuttering attitudes are similar or different both within regions of three different European countries and between or among five different European countries or similar geographic areas. It also aimed to compare these European attitudes to attitudes from 135 samples around the world using a standard measure.
Material and methods:
Using convenience sampling, 1111 adult respondents from eight different investigations completed the Public Opinion Survey of Human Attributes-Stuttering (POSHA-S) in the dominant language of each country or area. In Study I, the authors compared attitudes within three different regions of Bosnia & Herzegovina, Italy, and Norway. In Study II, the authors compared attitudes between combined samples from Bosnia & Herzegovina, Italy, and Norway (with additional respondents from Sweden), and two other samples, one from Germany and the other from Ireland and England.
Results:
Attitudes of adults from the three samples within Bosnia & Herzegovina, Italy, and Norway were remarkably similar. By contrast, attitudes between the five different countries or area were quite dramatically different. Demographic variables on the POSHA-S did not predict the rank order of these between-country/area differences. Compared to the POSHA-S worldwide database, European attitudes ranged from less positive than average (i.e., Italians) to more positive than average (i.e., Norwegians and Swedes).
Conclusion:
Factors related to national identity appear to play a significant role in differences in public attitudes in Europe and should be explored in future research
Mutations in GDF5 Reveal a Key Residue Mediating BMP Inhibition by NOGGIN
Signaling output of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) is determined by two sets of opposing interactions, one with heterotetrameric complexes of cell surface receptors, the other with secreted antagonists that act as ligand traps. We identified two mutations (N445K,T) in patients with multiple synostosis syndrome (SYM1) in the BMPârelated ligand GDF5. Functional studies of both mutants in chicken micromass culture demonstrated a gain of function caused by a resistance to the BMPâinhibitor NOGGIN and an altered signaling effect. Residue N445, situated within overlapping receptor and antagonist interfaces, is highly conserved among the BMP family with the exception of BMP9 and BMP10, in which it is substituted with lysine. Like the mutant GDF5, both BMPs are insensitive to NOGGIN and show a high chondrogenic activity. Ectopic expression of BMP9 or the GDF5 mutants resulted in massive induction of cartilage in an in vivo chick model presumably by bypassing the feedback inhibition imposed by endogenous NOGGIN. Swapping residues at the mutation site alone was not sufficient to render Bmp9 NOG-sensitive; however, successive introduction of two additional substitutions imparted high to total sensitivity on customized variants of Bmp9. In conclusion, we show a new mechanism for abnormal joint development that interferes with a naturally occurring regulatory mechanism of BMP signaling
Concern with COVID-19 pandemic threat and attitudes towards immigrants: The mediating effect of the desire for tightness
Tightening social norms is thought to be adaptive for dealing with collective threat yet it may have negative consequences for increasing prejudice. The present research investigated the role of desire for cultural tightness, triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, in increasing negative attitudes towards immigrants. We used participant-level data from 41 countries (N = 55,015) collected as part of the PsyCorona project, a crossnational longitudinal study on responses to COVID-19. Our predictions were tested through multilevel and SEM models, treating participants as nested within countries. Results showed that peopleâs concern with COVID19 threat was related to greater desire for tightness which, in turn, was linked to more negative attitudes towards immigrants. These findings were followed up with a longitudinal model (N = 2,349) which also showed that peopleâs heightened concern with COVID-19 in an earlier stage of the pandemic was associated with an increase in their desire for tightness and negative attitudes towards immigrants later in time. Our findings offer insight into the trade-offs that tightening social norms under collective threat has for human groups
