    Multichannel parametrization of \pi N scattering amplitudes and extraction of resonance parameters

    We present results of a new multichannel partial-wave analysis for \pi N scattering in the c.m. energy range 1080 to 2100 MeV. This work explicitly includes \eta N and K \Lambda channels and the single pion photoproduction channel. Resonance parameters were extracted by fitting partial-wave amplitudes from all considered channels using a multichannel parametrization that is consistent with S-matrix unitarity. The resonance parameters so obtained are compared to predictions of quark models

This article shows that there are substantial differences in the impacts within and between Pacific island countries. To be effective and not counterproductive, policy and donor responses need to be tailored accordingly. This article recommends a combination of measures directed at mitigating the threats and empowering rural people to take advantage of the opportunities

    The Roles of Dispersal and Predation in Determining the Seedling Recruitment Patterns of a Zostera marina System

    Seed dispersal and seed predation are two important processes in the early life history of plants. The interaction between these two processes influences the population recruitment from a parent plant. These mechanisms have been studied extensively in terrestrial plants and have resulted in various models to describe plant recruitment (e.g. Janzen-Connell, Hubbell, McCanny). However, seed dispersal and predation may also influence the population recruitment of marine angiosperms, such as Zostera marina (eelgrass). The objectives of this study were to determine: 1.) the patterns of seed dispersal as a function of distance from the seed source, 2.) the predation pressure on seeds within and outside the parent bed, 3.) the distribution of seedlings as a function of distance from the parent bed, and to test if this distribution corresponds to the seed dispersal and predation pressure, and 4.) how the observed patterns compare with simulated seedling establishment using a model developed by Nathan and Casagrandi (2004). Seed densities were highest within, and adjacent to, vegetated areas. However, some seeds were found up to 320m from the closest seed source. Seed predation was random throughout the study area; there was no significant difference in predation pressure between vegetated and unvegetated areas. Seedling densities in the spring of 2014 were highly correlated with seed densities found in the previous year, which also suggests that seed predation has a limited impact on population recruitment. The high reproductive output of Z. marina as well as the random distribution of seed predators in both vegetated and unvegetated areas may explain how many seeds are able to escape predation. These results are consistent with the invariant survival model, first described by McCanny, which states that seed predation has no spatial trend. Therefore, a majority of the dispersed seeds remain close to the parent bed, while a small portion of seeds disperse farther from the source. This is the first study of marine angiosperms to address seedling recruitment as a function of dispersal and predation from a parent source and has important implications in recovery and restoration of these systems following disturbances

    Decolouring bloodmeal: Consumption and potential recycling of peracetic acid

    A method of deodorizing and decolouring bloodmeal using an equilibrium mixture of peracetic acid, hydrogen peroxide, acetic acid and water has been developed to improve its marketability as a source of protein for bioplastics. The objective of this study was to determine what quantity of peracetic acid is required to give reasonable bleaching of the bloodmeal and determine whether there is potential for the wastewater to be recycled. This was carried out by measuring the quantity of chemical species in the initial equilibrium mixture and the resulting wastewater upon bleaching using volumetric analysis. Bleaching efficacy was determined after exposing 100 g bloodmeal to 1.1, 2.5, 3.6, 4.5 and 5.6 wt% peracetic acid solutions as either 300 g total solution or a constant molar equivalent of 2.2 mmol peracetic acid/g bloodmeal and using a chromameter to measure colour change. Addition of 300 g 5.6 wt% peracetic acid solution resulted in effective bleaching. This represented a ratio of 2.20 mmol peracetic acid/g bloodmeal of which 1.4 mmol peracetic acid/g bloodmeal was consumed (63%). If 300 g 300 g of <2.5 wt% solution is added such that there is still 2.2 mmol peracetic acid/g bloodmeal, bleaching is still insufficient. These results suggest that an excess of peracetic is required for bleaching to occur, and that its concentration is paramount to bleaching efficacy. Due to the excess of peracetic acid used in the bleaching process, there is potential for wastewater recycling to be carried out provided that the wastewater is not diluted

    Athletes' perceived use of information sources when forming initial impressions and expectancies of a coach: An explorative study

    The study aimed to identify the sources of information that athletes perceive as influential during their initial evaluation of coaching ability. University athletes (N = 538) were asked to indicate the influence of 31 informational cues (e.g., gender, body language or gestures, reputation) on the initial impression formed of a coach. Following exploratory factor analysis, a 3-factor model, (i.e., static cues, dynamic cues, and third-party reports) was extracted. Mean scores revealed that although static cues (e.g., gender, race or ethnicity) were rated as relatively unimportant during impression formation, dynamic cues (e.g., facial expressions, body language or gestures) and third-party reports (e.g., coaching qualifications, reputation.) were viewed by athletes as influential factors in the formation of expectancies about coaches. Such findings have implications for the occurrence of expectancy effects in coach-athlete relationships and the way in which coaches seek to present themselves. © 2008 Human Kinetics, Inc

    Venusian pancake domes: Insights from terrestrial voluminous silicic lavas and thermal modeling

    The so-called 'pancake' domes, and several other volcanoes on Venus, appear to represent large extrusions of silicic lava. Similar voluminous rhyolite lava flows, often associated with mantle plumes, are known on Earth. Venus' high ambient temperature, and insulation by the dome's brecciated carapace, both act to prolong cooling of a dome's interior, allowing for episodic lava input over an extended period of time. Field relations and aspect ratios of terrestrial voluminous rhyolite lavas imply continuous, non-episodic growth, reflecting tapping of a large volume of dry, anatectic silicic magma. Petrogenetically, the venusian domes may be analogous to chains of small domes on Earth, which represent 'leakage' of evolved material from magma bodies fractionating from much more mafic liquids

    Journal ArticleHox genes encode transcription factors that are used to regionalize the mammalian embryo. Analysis of mice carrying targeted mutations in individual and multiple Hox genes is beginning to reveal a complex network of interactions among these closely related genes which is responsible for directing the formation of spatially restricted tissues and structures. In this report we present an analysis of the genetic interactions between all members of the third paralogous group, Hoxa3, Hoxb3, and Hoxd3. Previous analysis has shown that although mice homozygous for loss-of-function mutations in either Hoxa3 or Hoxd3 have no defects in common, mice mutant for both genes demonstrate that these two genes strongly interact in a dosage-dependent manner. To complete the analysis of this paralogous gene family, mice with a targeted disruption of the Hoxb3 gene were generated. Homozygous mutants have minor defects at low penetrance in the formation of both the cervical vertebrae and the IXth cranial nerve. Analysis and comparison of all double-mutant combinations demonstrate that all three members of this paralogous group interact synergistically to affect the development of both neuronal and mesenchymal neural crest-derived structures, as well as somitic mesoderm-derived structures. Surprisingly, with respect to the formation of the cervical vertebrae, mice doubly mutant for Hoxa3 and Hoxd3 or Hoxb3 and Hoxd3 show an indistinguishable defect, loss of the entire atlas. This suggests that the identity of the specific Hox genes that are functional in a given region may not be as critical as the total number of Hox genes operating in that region

    Journal ArticleThe thymus, thyroid, and parathyroid glands in vertebrates develop from the pharyngeal region, with contributions both from pharyngeal endoderm and from neural crest cells in the pharyngeal arches. Hoxa3 mutant homozygotes have defects in the development of all three organs. Roles for the Hoxa3 paralogs, Hoxb3 and Hoxd3, were investigated by examining various mutant combinations. The thyroid defects seen in Hoxa3 single mutants are exacerbated in double mutants with either of its paralogs, although none of the double-mutant combinations resulted in thyroid agenesis. The results indicate that the primary role of these genes in thyroid development is their effect on the development and migration of the ultimobranchial bodies, which contribute the parafollicular or C-cells to the thyroid. Hoxb3, Hoxd3 double mutants show no obvious defects in the thymus or parathyroids. However, the removal of one functional copy of Hoxa3 from the Hoxb3, Hoxd3 double mutants (Hoxa3 +/-, Hoxb3-/-, Hoxd3-/-) results in the failure of the thymus and parathyroid glands to migrate to their normal positions in the throat. Very little is known about the molecular mechanisms used to mediate the movement of tissues during development. These results indicate that Hoxa3, Hoxb3, and Hoxd3 have highly overlapping functions in mediating the migration of pharyngeal organ primordia. In addition, Hoxa3 has a unique function with respect to its paralogs in thymus, parathyroid, and thyroid development. This unique function may be conferred by the expression of Hoxa3, but not Hoxb3 nor Hoxd3, in the pharyngeal pouch endoderm
