    Geometrical foundations of plasticity yield criteria: A unified theory

    A new model for elucidating the mathematical foundation of plasticity yield criteria is proposed. The proposed ansatz uses differential geometry and group theory concepts in addition to elementary hypotheses based on well-established experimental evidence. Its theoretical development involves the analysis of tensor functions and provides a series expansion which allows the functional stress-dependence of plasticity yield criteria to be predicted. The theoretical framework for the model includes a series of spatial coefficients that provide a more flexible theory for in-depth examination of symmetry and anisotropy in compact solid materials. It describes the classical yield criteria (like those of Tresca, Von Mises, Hosford, Hill, etc) and accurately describes the anomalous behaviour of metals such as aluminium, which was elucidated by Hill (1979). Further, absolutely new instances of stress-dependence are predicted; this makes it highly useful for fitting experimental data with a view to studying the phenomena behind plasticity.Comment: 31 pages, 5 figure

    Trading and rational security pricing bubbles

    Securities markets theory includes repo and distinguishes shorting from issuing. Here we revisit whether trading alone can give rise to Ponzi schemes and rational bubbles. We show that under the same institutional arrangements that limit re-hypothecation (e.g., through segregated haircut rules or explicit leverage constraints on haircut collecting dealers), (1) trading Ponzi schemes are prevented without having to assume uniform impatience, (2) for securities in positive net supply, bubbles are ruled out under complete markets but may occur when markets are incomplete.     This study seeks to analyze the temporal structure of combat in judo competition. Therefore, 14 finals of men¿s and women¿s under-23 Spanish Championship were studied. Variables such as time of total work, total and mean rest time, time of total and mean work on the floor, time of total and mean work while standing, the total and mean number of work and rest sequences were analyzed. Among the results that can be highlighted include the significant differences among men and women in mean rest time, and the mean time of standing judo work. This type of analysis tries to contribute different aspects in planning and organizing the practice of judo in a more specific wayEl presente trabajo pretende analizar la estructura temporal del combate de judo de competición. Para ello, se consideraron 14 finales del Campeonato de España sub¿23 tanto en categoría masculina como femenina.     H-alpha observations of the gamma-ray-emitting Be/X-ray binary LSI+61303: orbital modulation, disk truncation, and long-term variability

    We report 138 spectral observations of the H-alpha emission line of the radio- and gamma-ray-emitting Be/X-ray binary LSI+61303 obtained during the period of September 1998 -- January 2013. From measuring various H-alpha parameters, we found that the orbital modulation of the H-alpha is best visible in the equivalent width ratio EW(B)/EW(R), the equivalent width of the blue hump, and in the radial velocity of the central dip. The periodogram analysis confirmed that the H-alpha emission is modulated with the orbital and superorbital periods. For the past 20 years the radius of the circumstellar disk is similar to the Roche lobe size at the periastron. It is probably truncated by a 6:1 resonance. The orbital maximum of the equivalent width of H-alpha emission peaks after the periastron and coincides on average with the X-ray and gamma-ray maxima.     Real-time evolution of a large-scale relativistic jet

    Context. Astrophysical jets are ubiquitous in the Universe on all scales, but their large-scale dynamics and evolution in time are hard to observe since they usually develop at a very slow pace. Aims. We aim to obtain the first observational proof of the expected large-scale evolution and interaction with the environment in an astrophysical jet. Only jets from microquasars offer a chance to witness the real-time, full-jet evolution within a human lifetime, since they combine a 'short', few parsec length with relativistic velocities. Methods. The methodology of this work is based on a systematic recalibraton of interferometric radio observations of microquasars available in public archives. In particular, radio observations of the microquasar GRS 1758-258 over less than two decades have provided the most striking results. Results. Significant morphological variations in the extended jet structure of GRS 1758-258 are reported here that were previously missed. Its northern radio lobe underwent a major morphological variation that rendered the hotspot undetectable in 2001 and reappeared again in the following years. The reported changes confirm the Galactic nature of the source. We tentatively interpret them in terms of the growth of instabilities in the jet flow. There is also evidence of surrounding cocoon. These results can provide a testbed for models accounting for the evolution of jets and their interaction with the environment.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables.     The Visibility Graph: a new method for estimating the Hurst exponent of fractional Brownian motion

    Fractional Brownian motion (fBm) has been used as a theoretical framework to study real time series appearing in diverse scientific fields. Because its intrinsic non-stationarity and long range dependence, its characterization via the Hurst parameter H requires sophisticated techniques that often yield ambiguous results. In this work we show that fBm series map into a scale free visibility graph whose degree distribution is a function of H. Concretely, it is shown that the exponent of the power law degree distribution depends linearly on H. This also applies to fractional Gaussian noises (fGn) and generic f^(-b) noises. Taking advantage of these facts, we propose a brand new methodology to quantify long range dependence in these series. Its reliability is confirmed with extensive numerical simulations and analytical developments. Finally, we illustrate this method quantifying the persistent behavior of human gait dynamics.Comment: 5 pages, submitted for publicatio

    Powers of the Vandermonde determinant, Schur Functions, and recursive formulas

    Since every even power of the Vandermonde determinant is a symmetric polynomial, we want to understand its decomposition in terms of the basis of Schur functions. We investigate several combinatorial properties of the coefficients in the decomposition. In particular, we give recursive formulas for the coefficient of the Schur function s_{\m} in the decomposition of an even power of the Vandermonde determinant in n+1n + 1 variables in terms of the coefficient of the Schur function s_{\l} in the decomposition of the same even power of the Vandermonde determinant in nn variables if the Young diagram of \m is obtained from the Young diagram of \l by adding a tetris type shape to the top or to the left.     Time series irreversibility: a visibility graph approach

    We propose a method to measure real-valued time series irreversibility which combines two differ- ent tools: the horizontal visibility algorithm and the Kullback-Leibler divergence. This method maps a time series to a directed network according to a geometric criterion. The degree of irreversibility of the series is then estimated by the Kullback-Leibler divergence (i.e. the distinguishability) between the in and out degree distributions of the associated graph. The method is computationally effi- cient, does not require any ad hoc symbolization process, and naturally takes into account multiple scales. We find that the method correctly distinguishes between reversible and irreversible station- ary time series, including analytical and numerical studies of its performance for: (i) reversible stochastic processes (uncorrelated and Gaussian linearly correlated), (ii) irreversible stochastic pro- cesses (a discrete flashing ratchet in an asymmetric potential), (iii) reversible (conservative) and irreversible (dissipative) chaotic maps, and (iv) dissipative chaotic maps in the presence of noise. Two alternative graph functionals, the degree and the degree-degree distributions, can be used as the Kullback-Leibler divergence argument. The former is simpler and more intuitive and can be used as a benchmark, but in the case of an irreversible process with null net current, the degree-degree distribution has to be considered to identifiy the irreversible nature of the series.Comment: submitted for publicatio
