Orientation dependence of energy absorption and relaxation dynamics of in fs-laser pulses: How round is ?
By means of non-adiabatic quantum molecular dynamics it is shown, that the
amount of energy deposited into by a short laser field strongly
depends on the molecular orientation with respect to the laser polarization
direction. In consequence, subsequent electron-vibration coupling leads to
different nuclear relaxation mechanisms with mainly three pathways: (1)
excitation of giant modes ("breathing"), (2) formation of
deformed cage-like complexes ("isomers"), fragmentation predominantly into two
large pieces ("fission"). The results are in accord with and explain nicely
already existing experimental data. Future experiments are proposed to confirm
the detailed predictions.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Lectin prospecting in Colombian Labiatae. A systematic-ecological approach. - II
This is the second study of lectin and mucilage detection in Labiatae nutlets from
Colombia. It was carried out on 31 taxa belonging to 7 genera in which no previous
studies have been carried out in this field. A differential response was observed
in the group of genera and species studied in terms of mucilage presence as well
as lectin activity which consistently increased following extract treatment with
Pectinex. Lectin activity was detected in 28 species, being important (greater than
60% activity) in at least 75% of them. Genera such as Hyptis, Scutellaria, Aegiphila
and Lepechinia, whilst not presenting mucilage, did present lectin activity, having
high activity in most cases. By contrast, Salvia (in all sections studied) presented
mucilage and important lectin activity.
The work is devoted to the study of mechanisms of synthesis of new generation ceramic materials based on tetrad oxycarbonitride phases of zirconium and titanium.
The density of sintered samples was determined, the modulus of elasticity, nanohardness and ultimate strength were measured using the technique of nanoindentation and scratch testing, and the phase composition and microstructure of sintered samples were studied.
As a result of hot pressing, high-modulus, strong oxynitride ceramics were obtained
Two-dimensional Dirac fermions in a mass superlattice
We study two-dimensional (2D) Dirac fermions in the presence of a periodic mass term alternating between positive and negative values along one direction. This scenario could be realized for a graphene monolayer or for the surface states of topological insulators. The low-energy physics is governed by chiral Jackiw-Rebbi modes propagating along zero-mass lines, with the energy dispersion of the Bloch states given by an anisotropic Dirac cone. By means of the transfer matrix approach, we obtain exact results for a piecewise constant mass superlattice. On top of Bloch states, two different classes of boundary and/or interface modes can exist in a finite-size geometry or in a nonuniform electrostatic potential, respectively. We compute the dispersion relation for both types of boundary and interface modes, which originate either from states close to the superlattice Brillouin zone (BZ) center or, via a Lifshitz transition, from states near the BZ boundary. In the presence of a potential step, we predict that the interface modes, the Bloch wave functions, and the electrical conductance will sensitively depend on the step position relative to the mass superlattice
GNO Solar Neutrino Observations: Results for GNOI
We report the first GNO solar neutrino results for the measuring period GNOI,
solar exposure time May 20, 1998 till January 12, 2000. In the present
analysis, counting results for solar runs SR1 - SR19 were used till April 4,
2000. With counting completed for all but the last 3 runs (SR17 - SR19), the
GNO I result is [65.8 +10.2 -9.6 (stat.) +3.4 -3.6 (syst.)]SNU (1sigma) or
[65.8 + 10.7 -10.2 (incl. syst.)]SNU (1sigma) with errors combined. This may be
compared to the result for Gallex(I-IV), which is [77.5 +7.6 -7.8 (incl.
syst.)] SNU (1sigma). A combined result from both GNOI and Gallex(I-IV)
together is [74.1 + 6.7 -6.8 (incl. syst.)] SNU (1sigma).Comment: submitted to Physics Letters B, June 2000. PACS: 26.65. +t ; 14.60

DNA topoisomerases participate in fragility of the oncogene RET
Fragile site breakage was previously shown to result in rearrangement of the RET oncogene, resembling the rearrangements found in thyroid cancer. Common fragile sites are specific regions of the genome with a high susceptibility to DNA breakage under conditions that partially inhibit DNA replication, and often coincide with genes deleted, amplified, or rearranged in cancer. While a substantial amount of work has been performed investigating DNA repair and cell cycle checkpoint proteins vital for maintaining stability at fragile sites, little is known about the initial events leading to DNA breakage at these sites. The purpose of this study was to investigate these initial events through the detection of aphidicolin (APH)-induced DNA breakage within the RET oncogene, in which 144 APHinduced DNA breakpoints were mapped on the nucleotide level in human thyroid cells within intron 11 of RET, the breakpoint cluster region found in patients. These breakpoints were located at or near DNA topoisomerase I and/or II predicted cleavage sites, as well as at DNA secondary structural features recognized and preferentially cleaved by DNA topoisomerases I and II. Co-treatment of thyroid cells with APH and the topoisomerase catalytic inhibitors, betulinic acid and merbarone, significantly decreased APH-induced fragile site breakage within RET intron 11 and within the common fragile site FRA3B. These data demonstrate that DNA topoisomerases I and II are involved in initiating APH-induced common fragile site breakage at RET, and may engage the recognition of DNA secondary structures formed during perturbed DNA replication
